David Chase encourages improv. When Tony went to Janice's (Livia's) house after she killed Ritchie..he walks in with his pistol out.. he sees Ritchie on the floor, dead, he flashes a grin before he puts the gun away..that was improv..and Chase loved it and left it in the scene.

Yes I can see that she was truly laughing there; she does have a nice laugh and Tony looks very good there. He's less heavy in the early episodes. It shows that he really grew into the part as the years progress. What a difference!

@mafiamoviesrule Yes, that's the entire point. Each of the characters in The Sopranos are either from GoodFellas or Law and Order. Michael Imperioli is from Goodfellas also and he is the young kid who was shot in the foot and ironically in a later episode, the spin off is that Christopher shoots a young clerk in the knee .Chase is known for those little ironies and trivia .

So they laugh was unscripted i take it. It seems so. I wonder if it was a good idea to keep it in since the always do continue to have intense scenes between the two of them. But I guess Tony's character developed overtime in the series so it's a Different Tony in the beginning.

@smartman43 - James Gandolfini in interview paid a huge tribute to Lorraine Bracco in the help she gave him in those scenes over the years, they worked off each other hence the chemistry or 'intensity' you mention. To be honest I wasn't a big fan of her in Goodfellas but her acting in this show was fantastic

@smartman43 See, that's what I noticed as well. I think that Gandofini became Soprano until the point that he truly understood and owned that role. The other funny tid bit is that Silvio (Steven Van Zant) was slated to play Tony Soprano (because of his Pacino likeness) however, the decision for Gandofini to play the MC changed the dynamic and it was a monumental move. Excellent decision.
