alligator snouts are much wider, if you were to look at them from the top view they are rounded. This snout gets more narrow from the eyes to the tip. The other difference is that alligators have a dark green color where as a crocodile such as this one has a light green color and more patterns on it.

And to Superfly there are videos of Gustave a PBS crew went to capture him (which is the base for the movie Primeeval) and they video taped him from afar but couldnt get him to enter the cage.

The burundi river is a gigantic river, that eventually connects to the ocean. Gustave has a lot of ground he can cover, and this is why it has been so difficult to find him.
