"Took him minutes, took her nowhere". "Where have all Papa's heroes gone". "He kissed her then and there". Not just brilliant, but hilarious. DB is a god.
aint there one damn song that can make me break down and cry. how about all of the 1 out of 4 people in this country who may lose their home during this recession. or the 15% of us who are out of a job.( U-6 unemployment) . the occupy movement petered out. no spine there. they need to go for the throat. break up the banks. restore local control of schools. repeal the patriot act. make us feel like we are part of this country. then we will not be so numb. we wiill be young americans.
@mebtoe1 Occupy is not over. There is Occupy Congress later this year and this summer [it's just hard to tent in the winter!] This summer OWS will be back in a big way.
The 'ain't there one damn song' part kicks butt! Same kind of thing as in Suffragette City where he does the 'wham bam thank you mam' thing. Bowie's great at parts like that. ..another one that comes to mind is the 'oh how I sighed when they asked if I knew his name' part in Lady Stardust.
The reason there's so many different versions of this is that, if an Artist finds a song a good selling point, it's often re-released in a different form; acoustic, live, in a 'moving' form, or just more fitting to the year in which it is re-released. Just look at Rebel, Rebel.
Bowie is my favourite, he has been since I was about five, but I appreciate this song more now that I'm slightly older. The music in it, the lyrics.
@DominicanAllSaints Not Correct. Backing Vocals were done by Luthor, Ava Cherry and Robin Clark wife of Carlos Alomar who did a lot of work with Bowie in the 70's
Love the background vocals...that's Luther Vandross singing in the back...heard that it was Luther that actually came up with the hook background parts: "young american, young american, she was the young american..." that's how he got to sing for David Bowie...
Lol Luther Vandross isn't actually singing the backing vocals. He just wrote them. And its "she WANTS the young american" not "she WAS the young american". Commonly misheard lyrics.
@almnop00 Luther DID sing in the background. He mentioned in a 1988 concert that he met Ava Cherry while they were recording the background of "Young Americans", and even sang it that night. You can even see his credit in Wiki. Plus, you can clearly hear his voice back there.
@kennyj851 what does that mean?

"I heard the news today oh boy...." That's a line from the Beatles' song, "A Day In The Life"! Hahah, love it. Bowie is awesome like that.

This song builds so much momentum as it goes on. He's so versatile. Rings of an oldies tune in there in the background vocals.
I heard the news today ohhh boy!!! Beatles of course. Love the sax and piano. All around great tune!!!

Vandross does do backing vocals on some tracks, though. And Cissy Houston is one of the backing vocalists.
