I just came across this most beautiful song after so many years.......we first heard Barbara Cook live in Washington DC in 1977 - and fell in love with her and her wonderful talent. This song is especially poignant - the last few lines - love was easy because we had each other - that was so true for 24 years - and, yes, our love made it easy for you to have to leave me, Dan - I smiled when I heard this song- it's been over 13 years and I still miss you as much as I did the day you died.
The beautiful Janis Ian "Stars" was the first song I ever heard Barbara Cook perform in recital. It is also my favorite of her repertoire as well as one of my very favorite songs.
Admittedly, I've never heard any other artist perform this song; however, when Barbara Cook wraps her vocal cords around a song and a lyric, there is usually no need for comparison. A beautiful performance!
Barbara sang this on 2/27/06 at the Lincoln Center Annual Benefit (Vivian Beaumont Theatre). The concert featured Barbara Cook and Elaine Stritch; it was called "In Alphabetical Order". Barbara sang it in the same key as 'your' recording.
Your comment is testimony to Cook's taking care of her voice, and I especially appreciate the touch of Stritch mention, Alpha Order, and same key as 'my' recording.
@ capeguy954 - What an honor, to you and yours, and to Barbara Cook.

I truly appreciate your sharing the date of your witnessing her singing the song, given the nearly 30 years since the release of the version, here.

Barbara sang this beautifully in concert in February 2006 in NYC.
