Brandon was trained in martial arts. If he at any point felt victimised by Lawrence, he could have easily used non-lethal force against him. People need to realise that there were millions of other paths that could have been taken instead of killing Lawrence, but Brandon made a conscious decision to kill him. This and any other motive proves "mens rea". Lawrence's was only trying to counteract McInerney's bullying by flirting. Even I've done that and I'm not dead.
