  • a row and a ruction is like irish slang almost for a lot of yelling and carrying on....sorry for the delay in reply haha

  • thumbs up if you sang with vid, i know i did!

  • Is it me or does Sean sound a bit like Luke , tho Luke has a bit of a better voice then Sean (No offence , Sean is great to !)

  • @SpiritiSancti Agree that both sound more Celtic than Tirolean, tho' to my ears Luke Kelly sings more than a bit better than the rebel lepre-sean.

  • @stanibol Ooops, got myself in a twist over lepre-sean and lepre-shane. Tho' in the end it makes no difference, 'cos Luke is Luke and there isn't anything that comes near enough.

  • the master

  • how good is barny

  • luv itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • I know the Dubliners are still great..... but I do miss Luke and Ronnie.. great voices...

  • I know I'm a bit late in coming... but this Luke Kelly has himself a new fan from 2011. :)

  • @stanibol Better late than never :)

  • @kellyoneill Aye. Yet sorry to have to note, - Lúc Ó Ceallaigh; 17 November 1940 - 30 January 1984) was an Irish singer and folk musician from Dublin, Ireland, (from Wiki)

  • @kellyoneill

    2012 almost!

  • @stanibol welcome to our legend, and enjoy Lord Luke....lol...

  • @stanibol when you listen to Luke make sure you are full of soup (beer) and you will have the night of your life!

  • @vinnybro Nayyyyy. The clearer the senses the greater the rush of the music. Tho' me boyfriend McAuley would be among your crowd.

  • @stanibol

Now, when you get to heaven; you'll be able to recognize Luke when you see him singing with the angels. :))

  • @BoudiccaBlanc LoL that's very optimistic of you to think I'll end up in heaven. The difficult part is getting there, tho' the rest is easy... only need to look out for the least pretentious, bearded guy surrounded by a crowd of mad Irish, and that's plenty heaven for me!

  • @stanibol

    Aye!

  • @stanibol Luke was an amazing character. Great to have another afficionado on board.

  • bodmaski..your a fool

  • Banjo Barney's playing on this track is fantastic, sometimes it seems a shame that Lukes singing was so enchanting because you tend to focus on that and not so much on the other talent

  • yes us prods love him to

  • the master np

  • Love this song and with Luke singing it is brilliant, i have the version of Shane McGowan, i like both, so now i have a choice..hahaha, and i am in my 60's and no fuddyduddy i can tell you...just wish Ronnie Drew had been with them.

  • youtube get your shit together we aint stupid

  • 8 people are from salford!!!

  • @madmilepauric and 1 is deaf ha ha

  • Amazing rendition!!!!!!!! We miss you Luke!

  • I first heard this song on a Chad & Jeremy album & have loved it since then. At the time it seemed like it had been written just for Pittsburgh where i grew up. There are LOTS of Dirty Old Towns!!! Really love Shane's version too. Luke, you're the best!!!

  • Luke has the best version of every single traditional Irish song I can find. geez the lad was a legend. cheers from new jersey

  • no more irish music like this anymore :( :( :( :(

  • amazing voice amazing man simple

  • that fiddle is amazeing like bluegrass fiddle

  • voice of an angel

  • I love to sing, and will rarely be stopped. but there are exceptions. One night, waiting for a bus, I began to softly sing this song. A man asked me to stop. I continued, more softly yet. He then told_ me to stop. I asked "Why must I?" to which he said "They sang that song when I was in prison, and I hate it." Well, I shut up quick, no worries. I didn't want him shutting me up for keeps.

  • So much bickering about what town it's about? Luke does this song sooooo well, so just enjoy it!

  • @JonnyBum It's not a case of bickering. What is wrong with knowing what the song is about? It doesn't affect one's enjoyment of it but it does help with the understanding of it. If you're intersted in a song's origins than it is a good thing to know - if you aren't interested then it doesn't do any harm anyway.

  • When Luke is in a Dirty Old Town, tis' not dirty anymore

  • Everyone stop going on about where this song is about, and just enjoy it, it's written about Salford, the fact is the Dubliners made it popular. It can be about almost any town/city in the world, hence it's popularity and endurance over time.

  • @MsBubbabong "Everyone stop going on about where this song is about, and just enjoy it" Why? Can't you do both? It is natural if people from Britain point out that it isn't an Irish song if someone else claims it is - particularly if you come from the said area. As to it was the Dubliners that made it famous! I think that might depend on what country you come from.

  • @gaconnochie Who else is claiming it? He clearly states at the start of the song here that it's about Salford so I don't understand what you mean.

  • @MsBubbabong Not Luke but all over the internet there are people suggesting this is an Irish song. Even on the comments on this video there are three seperate posts from three seperate individuals who in turn thought the song was about either Belfast, Derry or Dublin! As long as it is done respectfully what is wrong with actually pointing out where a song comes from and what it is actually about? Why would you not be interested in a song's origins or who the writer was if you like the song?

  • @gaconnochie Well people suggesting that it's not about Salford are idiots because it is. My point is tho I think people can relate to it, it relates to a lot of places and I wish people would just enjoy the song rather than argue about the fact that it is about Salford. Under the bridge is about L,.A for instance but people can relate to it. That;s my point,

  • @MsBubbabong We're just going to have to disagree on that one. I can't see what the problem is with people pointing out it's about Salford - when it is. It doesn't take away from their enjoyment. The nature of this forum is that things will be repeated. Whatever the subject it gets repeated and peple will say things that have already been said several weeks or months ago.

  • @gaconnochie I have no problem with people pointing out that it's about Salford, I always tell them it is about Salford!

My point is most people can relate to it and it's a great song!

  • @MsBubbabong No argument with that then!

  • @MsBubbabong I don't think anyone is disputing that!

  • @gaconnochie And I don't know why I responded to that twice ? Must have ben the wine :-)

  • Ewan MacColl also wrote 'shoals of herring' that luke sings so amazing

  • Ah, the only thing that could have made this better is if the tin whistle that was in the recorded version was providing the harmony instead of the fiddle. Either way, Luke Kelly is such a beautiful, spirited singer. It's hard not to sing along with him!

  • neither am I Irish but after a few years'..i dont know....pause... I've been listening Luke and the band again for weeks now, finding new treasures everyday Big Thanks to kellyoneill:) and I simply cannot stop

  • Im not irish, but I also think Luke Kelly is fooking brilliant

  • hi i am irish and i think luke kelly was the best and by the way good video!!! :)

  • i thought this song was about belfast

  • @007mints It was written by MacColl who was born and raised in Salford as part of his play Landscape With Chimneys which was set in Salford and was about social deprivation in that area.

  • to a place... just like Loch Lomond

  • Love ya Luke.

totally unrelated...I think my thometown should adopt this as its theme...old industrial town, now run-down, crime-ridden with loads of welfare cases.

Surely Salford is not worse than that :-P

  • @joeygsmom The song was written in the late 1940s when Salford, like much of industrial Britain, was indeed a dirty town. When MacColl wrote "knock you down like an old dead tree" he's talking about the slum areas.

  • @gaconnochie sounds like where I live presently lol.

  • They were all so young then..

  • Great singer ,great bloke . Dead at 41 and that bastard ian huntley still breaths ha makes no sense.

  • Im seventeen and an irish folk song performer. This song always gets a row and a ruction from the crowd. LONG LIVE THE IRISH TRADITION OF SINGING AND MAKING SONGS!!!!!!!

  • @DaveLeary1 haha thats great!! :D i'm from sweden and i love irish folk music, it's the best kind of music all over the world!!

but i'm wondering one thing, the words: row and a ruction. what exactly does that mean?

keep up with the music! :D

  • 5 men

    5 legends

    1 band

    The Dubliners.

A truely great group of lads

    up the dubs!!!!

  • terrible rendition. this band has ZERO talent. shane mcgowan will be spinning in his grave

  • @bodmaski wtf? nice one troll....these guys are older

  • @bodmaski Are you kidding or what?

  • @bodmaski Wouldn't he have to be dead before he did that. I suspect there is a good chance that the Pogues probably covered Dirty Old Town because they heard the Dubliner's version! Can't imagine he'd think Luke Kelly was rubbish.

  • @bodmaski / everyone is entitled to an opinion/ this is a great version and by the way Shane will not be spinning in his grave unless someone has played a terrible trick on him!!!! was alive and well last time is saw him!!!!

  • @zoedaria you obviously know nothing about shane mcgowan if you consider him "alive and well"

  • @bodmaski well he is alive in the sence that his heart is beating but ile bet you he dosent know what day it is!

or how many teeth he is

    I love Luke Kelly.

    I love Barney McKenna.

    I'm 14 and a Yank.

THE DUBLINERS' LEGEND WILL NOT DIE!

  • @mashmusic11235 Good on ya

  • Luke in full flight, chased all the way by Barney and John.

  • Barney's banjo, bloody beautiful sound

  • fecking brilliant ..strong singing Irish voice

  • Who wrote this song? How old is it? Great tune, good memories.

  • @Smoke4Freedom Ewan McCall, Barney and Luke at their brilliant best.

  • @Smoke4Freedom It was written by Ewan MacColl in 1949. Ewan (real name Jimmy Miller) was born in Salford, England but had Scottish parents. He was the father of the British folk revival and married the American singer Peggy Seeger (sister of Pete Seeger). His most succesful song in the mainstream was The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face which was a huge hit for Roberta Flack. He was the father of the British singer Kirsty MacColl who sings on the Pogues hit Fairytale Of New York.

  • this is the best version of dirty old town ever.luke was at the top of his game that night and the rest of the lads where just superb

  • This is an amazing song. I am no longer in Salford, and i really miss being there.

  • perfect just perfect luke!! God Bless You for sharing!!

  • i thought it was about dublin!

  • I've only listened to this song about 100 times today...

  • Dubliners / Luke Kelly / The Clancys / Shane McGowan some are dead some still are alive- more or less...!The dead may r.i.p and the rest may sing forever

  • awwwwh my luke

  • The best drinksong EVARRR!!!

  • Luke will live on in my husband

  • Respect from Wales.

  • fuckin legend r.i.p luke kelly

  • Barney doing his own thing, and Luke giving him the eye now and then.

  • Big Irish Community in Salford. Salford is as Irish as anywhere could be outside of Ireland and is home to the 'Irish World Heritage Centre', which, if you don't know, you should look up, as I don't believe youtube will allow me to post a link here.

  • @HoraceOflaherty actually the man who wrote dirty old town was Ewan McColl whos parents were from scotland dso it still isnt irish or connected to ireland Im afraid.

  • @seonidh I didn't say it was connected to Ireland. However, if we really want to be splitting hairs, Ireland and Scotland share a Celtic link, as does much of Salford and Liverpool

  • @HoraceOflaherty it doesnt really prove anything as the term celtic is made up anyway

  • @seonidh I wasn't attempting to prove anything. Anthropology recognises only 3 races. Celts, as a subdivision within the Caucasian race, share the same kind of identity as, for example, Jewish people do.

  • @seonidh Listen, NOBOBODY CARES!!!!

  • @tony10396861 and who GIVES a shit what you think!!!!

  • @tony10396861 Your a retard that doesn't know good music so get out of my favorite music and go listen to whatever music you city slickers listen to

  • @xozazzie ??? This is my favourite music too. Luke was the best. He also happens to be a "city slicker", in fact from the very same city as me. What are you on about??

  • @tony10396861 Sorry about that. My younger brother said it. He's just a little ass wipe who thinks he's awesome. Disregard his comment. ahah.

  • @xozazzie Haha fair enough

  • @xozazzie Haha fair enough

  • Johnny Cash was Scotch-Irish, his family planted in Ulster in the 1650's.

  • @oldskib really because his biography makes no mention of this and states his family were from the Kingdom of Fife not the plantations. They are documented as sailing from scotland.

  • In saying that at least Kelly knew what he was singing about when he comments this song isnt irish. Of course teary eyes plastics sitting in a mock pub listening to the pogues version will assume its as irish as Guinness. Which of course would be wrong on two counts as stout isnt irish that brand is now spanish. It pisses me off when people try to oirish-ize something the Greek bazuki for instance. Its not a traditional instrument

  • @seonidh AYE AYE Captain - with you 100%.

  • The way he changes tone when singing shining steeEEELL is absolutely fucking amazing . . I dont know of any singer who can do that nowadays . .

  • This song is about as Irish as Yorkshire black pudding. Its about Salford and not about any Irish city anywhere. You may as well associate Molly Malone with London now how stupid is that

  • @seonidh the wirter had scottish parents so not the most english....but I agree its not irish lol

  • @3tangle3 really small world but Kellys grandmother mother was scottish as well. never knew that. Thats the problem (associating this as irish) by people that think every song or tune played by an irish band/folk band must be irish. A perfect example would be 40 shades of green by Johnny Cash who is also a scottish american with no irish in him. Some people think its a Yo Oldie Oirish song when its less than 50 years old. People who sit in plastic pubs really should be a bit more savvy

  • @seonidh Who gives a shit where it's about. The Dubliners made it famous. It can relate to nearly every town in the world, hence it's popularity.

  • this song is about Salford , and was written by ewan maccoll , kirsties dad , but Luke sings it best, what a voice , rip Luke sadly missed

  • set the night on fire dirty old town wooooooooo love dirty old town

  • God, that man can sing

  • @funkwolf It's possible but I have watched it many times, and it is when Barney does something seemingly different that Luke's attention strays over in Barneys;s direction..you can see John looking over at Barney as well...and yes I think Luke had tons of energy, like a candle burning so bright that he burnt out way too soon...but oh how lovely was the light... (with apologies to Edna St. Vincent Millay)

  • 5 sad bastards

  • @dc808 I don't agree - Luke and John both look over at Barney at the beginning of the vid and then as DropkickMurph87 says, whenever Barney does something a little different or gets a little louder Luke looks at him again, almost in annoyance and then just soars himself...its a wonderful vid for many reasons, including that interplay...and when I meet Barney I am going to ask him too

  • @schiple it's possible he's just looking around at whatever changes, luke had a lot of energy and doesn't seem able to stand still in any vid.

  • After hearing this song a thousand times it still gives me goose bums.

  • Luke was from a Norwegian Viking! U Irish and Schottish is relatives of our old Norwegian sailors!

  • I cannot believe it.ZZ Topp acoustic,brilliant

  • @dc808 I don't agree, it possible I guess but it seems everytime Barney gets a little louder or adds some stuff, Luke looks over at him..when I meet Barney I will ask him..

  • luke was the best!

  • @eoghan1916 Still is :)

  • @kellyoneill this is the best of all videos u put up luke gettin rowdy :) never bet really xxx

  • @kellyoneill he kept lookin over as if to say.. play up cant hear hear ya! ha no wonder the voilin in his ear say he couldnt hear a thing :)

  • @djR1chard To be honest, I believe he kept looking over because Barney's banjo was over riding the sound. Even John looked over early in the song with concern. Being true professionals, however, they kept on playing. Thats what seperates the men fron the boys!!!

  • 5 people live in clean new cities

  • @eoghan1916 no.....luke IS da best :)

  • @dannym4594 thats for sure

  • classic

  • "The wind doth blow today my love" begins a love song by Kelly...

.does anyone know the title of the song?

  • @64berber The Unquiet Grave :)

  • The Unquiet Grave - I think

  • amazing song, sung by an amazing man.....RIP Luke Kelly

  • I wonder what Barney has to say about this vid..clearly Luke was nonplussed at Barneys winging it, and then rose oh so magnificently to the occasion....this is classic. Two wonderfully wonderful talented musicians, one gone way too soon, the other continuing the legacy of the Dubs...and this is not to forget the marvelous contributions of Jim McCann and John Sheehan, without whom there would be no Dubs!!!

  • @schiple I'd say he's more looking at the camera man wandering around the stage than he is at Barney. 1:25

  • ultimate. you are just doing just fine. jesus. drunk and singing to dirty old town at the top of your lungs while your wife (not irish) is out out of town is heaven. This is what i'm up to the day before Thanksgiving. Luke Kelly is really one of Ireland's best.

  • AWSOME.
