Don't muffle the damn drum. I really dont think they sound terrible. Good tuning goes a lot further than muffling a drum.

ive heard of putting blankets IN the drums but not on top of the the actual drum...wouldnt that mildly silence it?

You throw a blanket in your bass drum to muffle that.

If you want to muffle your toms/snare use moongels for a mid muffle and either Evans or Remo Zer-o rings for a real nice muffle.

It depends on what your playing but bith are so easy to take off whenever you want.
