The writing. Wrenching, beautiful, poetic poignant scene, written by a veteren of the war in the European theatre. I literally was shaking after the first time I saw this scene in my teens, and it is still hard to watch. Magnificant writing, most novels don't do it as well...
@CurtHowland I feel exactly the same. I posted this clip on my FB on 11/11 and told whoever cares to look at my page that I call it Armistice Day, in order to remember the evils of war and all of its victims rather than to celebrate and glorify it.

James Garner is the MAN!
And, if I may, I would love to have had hot sex with Julie Andrews at this time. She was extremely hot back then! Wow! :)

Everyone needs a hobby. Sometimes it's war.

Yesterday, I scoffed with all the glorification of war gong on.
The original "celebration" was of the END of the war to END all wars.
Now, 11/11 has become just another celebration of war itself, a Memorial Day for fall.
I wonder what was going through Garner's mind as he played this part... whether the truth of it struck him then as it does viewers now.
