It's a musical timeline. The body of their work is so very impressive. Nothing stays the same, it's forever expanding and changing. I for one am glad of that...saw them recently and it was just as inspiring as the first time I saw them 20 years ago....but always for different reasons.

i agree the songs that ford did with the crowes suffer a bit when performed live.there marc's and nobody can perform them like him.but on the other hand i think the crowes turned a page and i think they wanted something different and luther is a fine musician that gels with what they are trying to accomplish.this is chris and rich's band and thats pretty much all you can say.i also think marc knew it was time for him to move along and do his own thing-we all know the man is an incredible talent
I'm sure Crowes fans won't like this comment, but Southern Harmony was brilliant, and it's a shame the band got overwhelmed by this juvenile, head-shop 70s revival sound on Amorica. They really never recaptured what made the great early on.
While Southern Harmony was brilliant ( I've been wearing it out lately,) I disagree that Amorica was juvenile, I think there was still a lot of development happening during Southern Harmony and you can hear the maturity and pain in Amorica. It's a really deep record. It's not nearly as "fun" as Southern Harmony, but damn is it powerful.
I don't know, it seemed like there wasn't any room for them to grow with Marc Ford, he's an amazing guitarist, but I think the Crowes weren't gonna do any real new music unless they had a different guitarist anyway, Marc was all about the blues, but he is missed when they play the old stuff that's for sure
I Love the black crowes, still do. But I miss Marc ford and eddie harch so much. I think sven pipien does a great job for the black crowes as a bas player and he has don ethat since he joined...
This is The Black Crowes .....for all who really want to know it doesnt get any better than this band during this time period...THEY WERE THE BEST BAND FROM 1991 to 1997.......they were dead on it much respect
Luther is freakin awesome!!!!! You need to see NMA! Also love Marc. It doesn't have to be one or the other!!!!!

Luther is an amazing guitarist. No questiining that.
But for me. Marc Fuckin' Ford IS the guitarist for the Crowes.
When he was in his mid-nineties prime, he was the untouchable.

The 2007-Present Day Crowes is nowhere near this lineup. Maybe someday they come back to the band to recapture what they are capable of.
