I don't know if anyone's called this one out yet, but I believe it's supposed to be "baby", not "Davey", in how we are like infants learning to recognize ourselves when we fist encounter our reflection, leading to us developing our identity (which, according to this song, is something we never really quite figure out).
It's just a mask. Peel the skin away and we'll trade, I'm not so attached to this face: Lastly he states his face is just a mask. A fascade. Not the him at all. If he could peel his face off, he would indeed trade it away for something better. Then he tells us what is glaringly obvious if you have cottoned on...he hates his face.
I might distort myself a bit, I doubt that i'm the only one, to hope their features smear, warp the face thats stuck to my skull: Davey admits he is possibly distorting (mentally) what he sees in the mirror and that he is sure there are others in the world who do the same. More people like him who desperately want to change their physical facial features.
If the packaing design can fix the contents?: How interesting! The hope that such piercings or other facial 'modifications' could possibly change the thoughts inside the mind. Of course Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition of the mind not the physical.
We're like magicians when we dream: One of the most interesting lines to me personally. Could be referring to how he mentally conjures up a new face for himself each time he looks in the mirror.
But we wake up and nothing's different: Same old ugly face!
Cover up with jewelry, or pierce all the parts you've got: Hide your facial flaws by 'dressing' your face with piercings to distract others' or your own attention from the percieved flaws.
Can you make a thing exist just by focussing on it? Here is is the singer himself asking if you can make something from nothing just because you keep thinking it. In this case, Davey has created the belief that his face is ugly. It very much exists to him.
I've been around a mirror enough to know it's hard to change: Hard to change the thought patterns once they are established.
Everything you think of is just as real as you make it: Here, perhaps he sees his facial flaws as real because he is buying into what his mind is selling. We all do that at times! A bdd'er would do this constantly.
Now he only focuses on dreams: This could mean a few things, but i think it could be something to do with him focussing mentally on what he wants from life. He does this in his mind only of course because he is pegged back by his obsessive compulsive nature.
He expects a lot from it, but then barely notices: He expects a lot in terms of results when he looks in a mirror, (in terms of making sense of his face and his feelings about it), but then that all goes out the window when he is confronted with self-loathing, hence he barely notices anything of how he 'really' looks. That is; fine!
Davey knows we all create the world from in our skulls: Davey knows what he thinks is very much 'his life' and therefore cannot be ignored.
Davey thinks he looks just like the face he makes in mirrors: Here i think he looks in mirrors and thinks 'that' (that being his distorted opinion of how he looks) is how he looks always.
Only once of twice a month does the mirror do him justice: Only one or twice a month is he happy with what he sees.
Every other time he looks a mess: Pretty self explanatory. Here is just thinks he looks a mess. Even though perhaps, he does not.
It's at the end of "Gone With the Will" when Rufus and Lilly come back from their trip to find their son and all their children are together at Rufus' loft I thought...

I wonder if this song is about BDD. Body dysmorphic disorder. The lyrcis suggest so to me. It sounds as though Davey could be a sufferer.
I love this song anyway, its so edgy and cool. I really like the band, cool as fuck!
