It's not the guitar.. I have the same guitar ( a Art&Lutherie and it really is more about his strumming and the set-up of strings and proper height. The newer models, like mine, have a LR Baggs lace pickup that is really nice and balanced.

I think the song idea is good and your presentation is a bit stilted. This means to me that you may well be a natural songwriter who needs to work on his craft of performance.
In any case do more. Practice will only help. In fact I also believe that if you post like this and ask for feedback you will get help that may be painful but will likely be truthful.
