We have comic books that need to be converted into Fixed Layout ePubs. Can InDesign work with creating comics-stype ePubs as you have done here? If so, where do we start learning from?
I have found your tutorials very helpful! But I have finding it impossible to figure out one thing when creating an epub: how to override the auto text flow and get scene breaks (***) to center.
Any advice Terry, or anyone? This is a book that will be used on ipads, and all other e-readers as well, so I do need the auto text flow to work, all except for scene breaks. Any help is appreciated greatly!!!!!
Hi, I seem to have an issue when I preview my document in Digital Editions. There isn't any page breaks so all the words are squeezed into the first page. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
I've been using InDesign for years for print books and need to adapt the old designs to epub formats, especially Kindle. In our print pubs, the text only flows through each chapter but not continuously through the entire book. It sounds like, I have to create a new InDesign book, and reflow all the chapters. I was about to reformat all the InDesign files to MS Word and convert that to HTML, but I'd prefer to keep it in InDesign.
My CS5 doesn't let me put in these dimensions for some reason? it seas the margin and column dimensions cannot be used with these dimensions. also it does not let me put the dimensions in pixels..only in mm. even if i put them in in pixels and it converts it to mm it still says it cannot be used!! help me!:)
@greek17 >> I had the same problem. Terry forgot to type 5.5in and 8.25in. The way it shows in the video the margins and gutters = more than the total width. A small detail.
i really like this but this is such a pain your all over the place. and you skip the entire beginning. I wish you would redue this so it starts with opening up indesign, and then adding the graphics and doing it from start to finish not backwards through but its really nice
Get the Fujitsu ScanSape scanner and with the free software one can scan any book into PDF then convert to ePub. I take a book and cut 3/8" of the spine of the book with a cheap band saw and then I can feed a 600 page book thru the scanner in 10 min. The software will then convert it to a word search-able PDF. It use a program called Fine Reader. The books come out %99.9 perfect in the exact format of the book with all color pictures and tables in perfect place. Goodbye my 100's of books.
At 1:15 you said the cover is limited to "one graphic, one frame". But since the ePUB format uses XHTM and CSS, can't you just overlap, for example, a big SVG file for the frame of the cover under a transparent PNG image (a product, a statue, etc) for a cleaner look ?
@terrywhitetechblog Why would I get this error message when I follow your setup (0:44): "Specified margin and column setup does not fit within specified page size?"
i love this video, its really nice to see such good information, the true is you can buy USA iTunes gift cards at this store iTunesgiftScards at COM, they are legit iTunes Gift card store, they deliver to me by email, and Fast, my advise to you :)

Excellent! Thank you Terry for an excellent video AND for saving it in 720HD format. This is perfect! I want to ask you, how do you upload ePUB books to the Apple Store. Is this hard to do?
ePub is perfectly capable of embedding fonts and bringing them over with the book, EXCEPT on the iPad, which fails to implement the epub spec fully. In fact you show how the epub carries references to the right fonts when you open your example in Adobe Digital Editions. Solution - people need to buy a better epub reader or wait for Apple to get their act together.
Pity it doesn't export the right meta element so iTunes finds the cover.
@charlesajking Considering the title of the video is; "Creating an iBook (ePUB) for the iPad with InDesign CS5", Terry is exactly right. If the video were an indepth discussion of the ePub specs and analysis of what is supported on various devices then your comment would make sense.
Terry, there is a built-in Amazon url shortener that you could use instead of 3rd-party ones. It's on the right side of the product page. It produces 5 character "amzn" links
Bitly, Tinyurl, etc are nice, but there is no guarantee how long those links will stay up. Several of these services have gone belly up and it's a waste of time to go and manually update the links in the future.
That was a great tutorial. Very informative. And yeah, that export thing was really fast. Sometimes it's funny how you think that something's broken if it's THAT fast. :) Great stuff. Keep it up.
Can you please point us in the right direction?

How do you get text over an image without making it part of the image? So that the text is still recognized as text in the reader.
