Very good information and review. Seems today that batoning is over emphasized. There are good backpacking saws and medium weight hatchet/axes. Batoning a small hatchet works fine. I like the 3 knife strategy: swiss army type, scandanavian puuko type and a heavy military type. pocket lanyard, on the belt, and on the backpack. One could be a multi-tool. stonenstrop
If I am not mistaken the Woodlore bij Ray is 4 mm. thick. Of course you can carry a thin blade woodvcarving and foodprep knife if you are also able to bring a axe for the chopping. If you don't bring an axe or an extra knife it is better to have your knife a bit thicker at the spine for batoning
hmmm...good video, but in my time in the outdoors my bowie was a better chopper than my hatchet...might just have been a cheap hatchet! still, I like my knives a little thicker so my thumb doesn't hurt after an hour or two of carving. about 3/16in. is what I like. I generally take at least 2 knives, a big one and a small one.
Confirmed alot of what has been taught to me growing up. Bigger is not always better. A tool for each task. Good job. There was one book I will be checking out. I do enjoy Hemmingway. Good vid.
Wel every knife has its own purpose. Rambo knives are just for showing off or movies, For carving you got Woodlore or Mora, for fighting you got KAbar for fishing you have to have filet knife, For choping you got hachet or an axe, Saw also has its place. Most people want a knife that ca do all this things and usually end up with a silly knife uncapable of doing any of these chores. A good example of those men is "Nuthinfancy" . Good video.
As a knifemaker, it was nice to see people who agrred with me as to the ideal types of knives for outdoorsmen. I get a lot of requests for what amounts to a sharpened chisel by people who think bigger is better.
I have to agree. 1/8" is a plenty strong blade. its why I like the svord knives which are a scandi orgination. I love all the knives in my collection but so far the thick blades only perform better when used for batonning to split wood, but they sacrafice in other areas.
thanks,interesting stuff.
your knives look stunning.
all the best
regards

Just a small wish for the next vid in the same manner, please slow the text down a bit, it was hard to catch up in the text.

Sorry about that mate. I had to make the choice between having it go really slow...but then people might get bored waiting...
Or have it run at the speed that I chose....which means that people can still pause it.
God jul. Jag hoppas ni har en bra dag Andreas.
