  • how do u turn the pump up?

  • that starts better than my 6.9 at 90 deg Fahrenheit.

  • gotta love those idi engines

  • thats not bad for idi

  • Nice truck. My brother's fixing up an 81' one ton single wheel. I think he wished it had 6.9 instead of 400 in it.

  • gota love the knock and rattle of the idiwhen its cold

  • Is it normal that my 83' F250 with the 6.9 IDI just turned 950,000? LOL! I love ford diesels.....

  • @fxdrdnme 950,000? i call bull shit

  • @znofxz he may have that many miles, unlikely but not impossible. and it may have been rebuilt several times, also im not sure but i didn't think the odometer went over 99k.

  • fordtrucks . com

you should join if you have not already

  • no other forum better than FTE.

  • ha ha ha. this makes me smile. love wachin diesel engines start especally trains.

  • How do you like that engine? I'm thinking of getting a 6.9 diesel engine, and just wanted your opinion on it. Thanks!

  • yea thanks been wanting to upgrade to a diesel pickup been driving a 91 f150 for the past couple years.. Nice truck you got there though it looks and sounds good

  • was looking at a similar truck around here an 85 with the 6.9 and was wondering what kind of mileage your getting, do you think much of a difference between it and a 7.3?

  • Back when my truck was N/A (no turbo) I would get around 17mpg, and my best was 19.7mpg. But that was driving really easy. With the turbo on and my pump turned up I seem to get around 16mpg average. But I have no overdrive. A 6.9 with an overdrive will get better fuel economy than a 7.3 IDI. Hope that helps

  • 6.9 idi are very dependable as long as you keep oil in them.they are a bit low on power though.

  • is it true that the older idi's are more reliable than trhe powerstroke? I know idi parts are cheaper though

  • Kinda depends. I would say on the average they are about the same, except for the 6.0 psd lol. You just have to do the right upkeep on them, so they are running good

  • Those damn 6.0's LOL! That really hurt ford. I owned a 6.0 for a couple years, traded it right before my warranty was up. It did well for a long time, but ended up being a huge POS. I now own the new 6.4, it is so NICEEEEE! I love the old 6.9, 7.3 IDI's.

  • where does the RPM governor hit on your diesel? i'm kind of worried because i picked up a 86 just like yours, i'll start it and it idles at 0RPM and only revs up to 2500RPM. I think the RPM gauge is way off, but is it normal for the diesels to start bouncing/ smoking a little when you try to rev them too high? If yours stops at 3500RPM then i'll stop worring. thanks for any help you can provide, i'm new with the diesels

  • if the engine will not reached governed speed of abt 3200 on a 7.3 not sure abt the 6.9 id change fuel and air filters and then check pump timing.... im not a old mechanic or anything but i have been driving one of three idi fords for the last 11 years lol i know a lil abt them... hope that helps u

  • @9529180

your tach sensor is shot. Replace it and the tach should work. about a 70 dollar part. ford only

  • @FordGuy100 the 6.0 was a piece of crap

  • i love my 6.9 it smokes a lot thought

  • wow yours starts so much better then mine does at 24, smokes less too. nice truck

  • Thank you much man.

I'm getting another vid tommorow, forcast calls for 10*

  • Nice sounding rig! Getting a cold diesel, especially the 6.9 can be a real trial for inferior batteries. Checking the glow plug circuit is cheap insurance for the winters we have here.

These engines can handle ether, just use a tiny puff after the glow plug light goes out. The key word here is tiny.

  • the old idis are great trucks i have a 87 F-350 with hypermax turbo but it starts in weather up to -30f with no plug in the biggest thing is a set of batterys and of course cables and there is nothing that beats the sound of a straight piped idi they just have a good presence driving down the road

  • Hey Snowmobilefanatic you Ignorant 15 year old asswipe -15 celsius is only 3 about zero u retard fucker. U act like thats cold that aint shit / Plus Leave the guy alove about his truck u stupis prick you cant even afford to fill up 1 of his tanks with diesel

  • Plus she started pretty good for as slow as that engine was cranking . Cant beat them IH Diesels I got one and She starts and Runs Like it was new out of the crate

  • NICE truck! id love to have an older Ford truck like that with a diesel in it!

  • Love the old IDI's. :)

  • Heck yeah man, nothing like them.

  • Yeah, pile of shit my fat fucking ass! This IDI starts up awesome.

  • Do you use a muffler on your truck or is it straight piped?

  • Straight piped :)

  • Thought so cuz it sounds amazing!

  • This a F-250 or F-350?

  • Its an F-250

  • snowmobile fag's immaturity really shows! Hey if you dont know what your talking about and are just going to bitch like the little snot head you are, please do the rest of use a favor and shut the FUCK UP!!!

  • I had an idi once. traded it for an early psd, slowly and stubbornly paying parents back for loan on the idi HA! oh im 16 by the way neat to see someone my age with a diesel :P

  • k 18 degrees i not cold at all try -30 degres celseious and the only reson it started shity is because ur batteries are dead and its a pile of shit international mottor

  • Nice. Why do people get off telling me my truck is a POS? I'm sorry, I'm only 17....and my parents didnt buy me a rig like a lot of people. Its the best I can do. Your a dipshit for thinking my batteries are dead, they are fine. Battery cables have gone to shit, plastic is cracked in a bunch of places and the copper strands are all broke apart.....they are originals, so 23 years old....lasted pretty long IMHO.

It doesnt get that cold here. ALL IDI's will have problems starting at those temps

  • and also y don't u get a job and buy ur own truck i m 15 and i could buy a nice diesel easyalie plus i got all mu own sleds plus quads and close to 4 grand in tools...all payed for on my own

  • I have a job you fucker.....14+ hours a day for the last 4 weeks...this was my first day off cause of rain. Good job paying for it all on your own....do you want a cookie? LOL.

Seriously dont wanna start arguing with you. I'll just block your shit if you fucking post something negative again. I dont need a 15 year old who cant even fucking drive on his own tell me I got a POS...when he doesnt got a pot to piss in.

  • Do you want a cookie, fucker? Shut the fuck up about the guy's truck!

  • its unfortunate you use snowmobiles to get around town

you like them 2 stroke gassers that sound like ricers

get a life punk and stay away from diesels

  • Yeah and you can barely spell let along form complete sentences.

I've forgotten more about diesels than you will ever know.

You are nothing but a spoiled little twit who needs to be beaten with a 1" rubber radiator hose to learn some manners.

  • Thats cool ROFL. Its a matter of money dip shit...I've been working 14+ hour days...when I get the money its on my list of things to do. Yes, it would start fine at those temps cause it would TURN OVER FASTER. God damn man...cuss me out again and your shit is blocked you fucker. I aint in the mood to get into a pissing match with a god damned 15 year old.

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!

  • 17? Bravo for being mature, most people our age are real irritating on these websites...

Nice truck, i'm looking at getting an older ford diesel for a winter beater. It'd have to have a block heater though, I live in Minnesota.

  • pile of shit you say i thing you are very fucked over in the head why my god i got a 7.3 idi pumpturned up and a huge turbo that sumbitch pulls a drives like no other and she sat for over a month with the temp in the 20s and she had heavy oil in her and after the first couple of starts she fired right up

  • THIS IS PISSING ME OFF SOOOO MUSCH...I looked on the internet for 5 1/2 hours yesterday trying to find an already decent condition 6.9 diesel automatic...IT'S NOT POSSIBLE!!!

  • Depends on where you are looking, where are you at?

  • I live in upper Michigan but I go to google and type in "6.9 diesel ford for sale" and look on pretty much evrything that pops up.

  • So, where you live is where your problem is at. Road salt just eats these things like no tommorow. I would go onto craigslist, for your area, and search for some there.

  • either that or I'll spend the extra money and get a '99-'02 7.3, that way I won't need to do body work or anything either.

  • Or look for one on the west coast somewhere, and have it hot shotted over to you. It would be more expensive, but you would have a good rust free truck.

  • I live in Lower Michigan and sometimes the Ford dealers(which are everywhere) have old engines lying around for various reasons. They love to get them of the lots! You might have called all the dealers already, but if you havent its worth a shot.

  • Are the 6.9 IDI's carburated?

  • No diesel's are carburated. Well besides some really old diesel tractors that started on gas then ran on diesel.....but thats another story.

  • Wow, so they have fuel injection for diesel in the 1800's when they were invented?

  • I havent looked at the early model diesel's. My guess would be that if they did, it was a really simple setup. Regardless though, all modern diesel's....from I would say the 1940's to recent all have fuel injection. Earlier engines I have no idea.

  • Yes they had injection systems but they used what is called 'blast injection' meaning that they used high pressure air to blast the fuel into the cylinders. It's not been used since the 1920's on diesels after the advent of the positive displacement injection pump.

  • Ahh okay. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!

  • Ya have a block heater or glow plugs?

  • I have both....Ford IDI's came with glow plugs for everyday use and a block heater for when it gets real cold. This was with just the glor plugs though. It would have started faster if my motor turned over faster...my stock battery cables have just about had it, there is cracks in the insulation and the copper strands inside are all corroding. Time for some new ones.

  • That fordxpowerstroke guy knows what what the hell he is talking about. Amen to those 7.3l and 6.9l

  • very nice coldstart video check out my dads 7.3l diesel cold start

  • 6.9, 7.3 strokers are good, so are the 5.8 5.4 v8 and 6.8v10 gassers. but the newer 6.0 v8 sucks, and the 6.4 aint much better, ford need to go back to the 7.3 or 6.9

  • I would agree with the 6.0 not being all that good of a motor, but I have a couple thousand miles under my belt driving a new 6.4 and they are awsome, no problems with the one I drove.

Ford cant go back to the 6.9 or 7.3, they wont meet EPA emmisions, it just wont happen. You could buy a new truck and swap in a 6.9 or 7.3 though.

  • do those new 6.4l have a lot of grunt?

  • Yeah man, without a doubt. It has grossed over 19K pounds, and was pulling moutain passes with plenty of power to spare, enough so that we could basically pass anyone we wanted. Fuel economy isnt the greatest, but for a 9100 pound truck with some real crappy aerodynamics it aint to bad.

  • thats good ford was goin through some hard times with the 6.0l, those things were problematic but the 7.3ls were bullet proof

  • nice truck man, those 6.9's and 7.3's are bulletproof!

  • You better believe it :)

  • how are the glow plugs on it?

  • I think there fine, though I'm still running the original glow plug controller, and those are prone to failing.

I just think it started up that hard due because it turned over so slow.

  • they're prone to fail on the older IDI's, although most ppl on YouTube that have the IDI's, they just do a manual glow plug switch, thusly starting the truck. It could be the GP controller or the GP relay, just wonderin'

  • Maybe, I'll eventually switch them out. When I first got the truck, it would turn over almost twice as fast as what the vid shows. It would start at 28* with the first revolution, while now it will take a good 3-5 revolutions at 28* to start. This is why I'm thinking a starter and battery cables will be a must before next winter if not sooner.

  • hopefully you'll get to them before winter is over with. See what happens next winter.

  • those 6.9's and 7.3's are pure junk i have seen so many with a crack in the side of the block at least a first gen duramax only cracks the heads which can easily be replaced with the right ones and a cummins..well that right there is bullet proof

  • Basically because of neglect. Yes they had there problems, but with proper maintainance they will last a long time. I shit you not I've heard a couple people with over 600K miles on them before they let go, that is a long time.

They are more simplistic than the newer computer controlled diesel's, hell I've run my truck on diesel, motor oil, and I know a guy who runs some auto tranny fluid.

  • And I suppose I should also add, that if you do blow a motor, unlike a cummins, powerstroke, or duramax which cost a couple thousand dollars for a good used engine....you can find a good running IDI for $500-1000.

  • hahah hear that guys? 7.3s are junk. real funny. them are the best diesels to ever be in a ford. i would put a 7.3 stroker second to a 12 valve cummins only because a 12v is inline, easier to work on, etc.

  • It did great. Mine is starting to drink a lot of water. Probly be lookin for a block soon. I just bought it...the guy didn't take care of the cooling system.

  • Started up very nicely for it to 18 degrees and a diesel. Hehe :) I like the truck, sounds good. How much did the turbo help you ? I put a few mods on my Cummins and it made a big difference.

  • The turbo helps out so much its not even funny. Actually all the turbo does is supply more air so I can turn up the fuel without the EGT's getting out of hand, so basically the fuel is what adds the power. You can get way more power out of a cummins by the way....But I still love my IDI

  • I like both of them. They each have their own unique sound. Hehe. We had a 92 Ford F-350 with a 7.3. I loved that truck. It was awesome. Wish we still had it.

  • I bet you keep the IDI plugged in even after you have driven it so you don't have trouble starting it in the morning. I'm glad it started up beautiful for you NOT plugged in. Keep up the good work on the IDI.

  • Nope, I've never plugged it in. On the early blocks there was a block defect where the block heater is and some of the blocks cracked because of it. So for that reason, I wont use it.

But it only gets down to the teens here, so starting it up like this is no problem. It will get better once I get a new starter and battery cables put in.

  • Oh, that's why.

  • So how do you tell if a rod is knocking...lol. Good job with the video.

  • LOL I suppose it would be kinda hard to tell on a cold IDI. It really doesnt like the cold to much :)

  • A new gear reduction starter and new battery cables will be going on it in the future. I dont think it started to bad for how cold it was.
