As soon as it moved away from school life..... to encompass the time away from the school itself.... it turned to crap....
Same thing happened with London's Burning and The Bill..... You put the characters in situations outside of the context of the show.... i.e schooling/education, fire brigade, policing..... and it ceases being a drama, and becomes more of a sitcom.
In the end, the characters become too diluted and the core elements also disappear...
Grange Hill lost it after about Series 17. Before that it had some of the greatest characters and storylines ever. Half my school weren't even allowed to watch it...you know it's good when that happens.
The fuckin bbc turned it to shit anyway, relocating up north then changing the format entirely. All of a sudden they realised oh this is thoroughly unentertaining so lets axe it. Why bother wasting time making it shit, why didn't they just axe earlier on
I don't think they should have cancelled it tbh, yeah this stuff isn't as good as the earlier stuff (watching all the earlier episodes at the moment) but there's always SCHOOL. You can't say that GH has become irrelevant. If they'd just got new writers and stopped doing all the watered down shit, they could have easily relaunched the entire thing.
@Yosh2006 Where are u watching the early episodes mate, online somewhere? Bought them off a seller? Just wondering if u cud tell me as id love to see some of them again. Only saw the late 90s early 2000s episodes, and never saw the ending but man ur right these just completely suck so much ass. Remember in the late 90s it was ok when they had a lot of decent storylines and characters before it went on a bit of a hiatus if i remember correctly, and they brought it back with shit like this.
Eeehhhh... That was fairly terrible. I guess the school jumped over a shark while it was hopping from London to Liverpool. Remember when kids shows used to entertain and subtly educate you (how dare they) without being patronising?
AGHHHHHHH!! terrible terrible ending but it was dead on its feet for at least 10 years before i suppose.
What it lost was that feeling of a real school remember ziggy and co as year sevens then growing up to 16 year olds and leaving? or amalgamation to all kids of that teacher we all hated in our time at school in mr bronson? GH paymasters turned the show into one for 10 year olds and threw out all the good things that made it what it is.
@VengaboysRbackINtown great times and back then Hill had messages like the "Just say no" anti drug storyline that made headline news in england and the US just think what could be written today to show the current youth problems of teenage pregnancy,Gangs, knife crime and bullying but the stupid BBC,who WE pay, turned Hill into crap.
Grange Hill needed to die with it's Hollyoaks format. It used to have gritty viable realisitic storylines but turned into some politically correct left wing liberal crap nightmare.
They should of shot the program while it was still good about 15 years earlier.
Disguting what happend to GH redmond wanted a more mature set of storylines like the just say no stuff from the 80s (GH greatest period imo) but the BBC wanted this juvenile pap the BBC will poor tons of money into strictly and other crappy shows but didnt want to pay up for an institutiton lke GH.
They reverted to the old song? It sort of cut off the moment I was enveloped in. It was quite something seeing the end of the 30 year long running show, and then all of a sudden I'm nailed with this
*Baw baw baw baw.*
Oh well, epic end of an era, though I don't care for the nonsense of a bomb storyline!
"politically correct left wing liberal crap nightmare"
Haha. In response to a television programme demonstrating the benefits of a liberal education policy.

Typical of teachers... telling kids to stand still when there's a bomb potentially about to go off! :)

Real teenagers were being stabbed to death, left right & centre, but they couldn't show that in Grange Hill?
