It's not outragous, I don't understand why americans want to remain so ignorant. Or well, this guy wants them to remain ignorant. Knowing several languages won't split the nation, where do you get that idea? It's absurd! I totally agree with Obama. And besides what would really help the economy is knowing several languages. Makes communication easier. Allows for better understanding of what people want, of their culture, etc. You can make better deals out of it. This guy is a douchebag.

God forbid Americans learn another language.... My God!! In Europe people speak 3 and 4 languages. You should learn another language not because you should accommodate to immigrants, but because you should want to improve your general knowledge, being bilingual gives you the edge on many things... but that's OK though stay that way. No, we will not learn the language of our invaders. We will force them to learn our language or we will kick them out. It's evolution my friend; why should we accomodate people who come into (what was once) OUR COUNTRY. My family came here from Greece in the early 80's, and we did not make everyone around us learn Greek. We learned English so we could assimilate. We still have our Greek identity, but as a First Generation American, I am more proud of the American Heritage

@Ferike2000 Sure, learning some languages is nice if you actually want to learn. A lot of kids in school have to learn spanish or french ,for example, from elementary to middle school. The "teaching" is pretty useless and i couldnt wait to get out of it cause what was i learning? How to order at taco bell? Plain and simple, learn a language if you want, or if youre parents have you do it. Not because Obama says you have to. All of his ideas are shit, this is no different.

@WhatWouldJackBauerDo I agree that many of Obama's ideas are stupid. But sometimes people don't notice how useful something can be until they've done it. If you ask a kid if he wants to go to school, the most likely answer is gonna be no. I think it's the same with languages. A lot of people might not want to learn them, but when they do, they notice how useful it can be. I know three languages for instance, and I can talk comfortably with a LOT of people around the world.

@WhatWouldJackBauerDo I think knowing english alone is not enough, even though most people around the world speak english. There are certain things you start to understand only after you've learned more than one language. You get a much deeper insight into other cultures. This fosters tolerance for instance, which is very important.

why? i think that we should only be required to learn english, and if someone is working here with a green card, they should learn english, just like my great-great grandparents did. and what second language does Obama know? i think English should without a doubt be a requirement to live here. period.

i love medved, but this would be one of the few times i disagree with him. Obama was right on that one. Americans "should" learn Spanish because Spanish is more spoken world-wide then even English. And Americans have sooooo many Spanish speaking people here. hello?

Well, along that line of thinking, we should all learn Mandrin Chinese as well then. It's the most widely spoken language on the planet...but i think i'll stick to my original plan and learn Russian and French first. Spanish can come later.

One other thing I wanted to mention. I noticed you speak a second language, so do I. I speak Japanese. For example;"アメリカに私たちのことばが英語です。それか­ら英語が日本にとてもたいせつですから、みな子供わ英語を勉強し­なければいけない."

Basically what I said was; "English is the language we speak here in America. Also, English in Japan is very important, and because of this it is mandatory for every child in school to learn it."

Zynthtique,thats where ur wrong, not all the world hates America! many acknowledge that America fought for the freedom of the world,not only in Europe but in Asia,,Australians would be speaking Japanese now if not for America, so put a sock in it!
