Fiat money is money by order of government rather than money established by the market place. If you look on the bills of credit in your wallet (fiat money) it says This Note Is Legal Tender etc.

Really it is just a piece of paper with no backing; it is a debt of the Federal Reserve Bank. You can't go to the Federal Reserve Bank and get anything else but another piece of paper for it. They can and do print all they want inflating the currency and causing prices to rise.
