Hey Charles, I don´t know when you came back, but I am so happy you did. Sarah is still so good today, but she was for sure one of my very favorite child singers of all time. Note: I have recorded lots of live albums with many artists, but when I produced Sara's live at the Cat Club album (she was 11) It is the only live album with no overdubs (re-recordings of performances) after the live recording. Sara wouldn't allow it. Someone asked, one time, why her pitch was so perfect in this video. I can only say she had a good day that day. Yes I've heard Sara hit a few bad notes on occasion but I also heard Barbra Streisand hit a few as well. Rarely but it happens.

I think the right term would be LOOKS like since it is a function of matching sound with visual. She is singing live to a studio track. You can tell by the room ambience on her vocal. Only vocal was recorded live and then a cleaner studio track added to that in a mix (the same track as she sang to only cleaner). So, yes it was mixed to make it sound better but the vocal is the live vocal. A visual lag at any point is most likely poor synch in the editing. The vocal is 100% live.

Actually, it is most likely the fact that Youtube quality is poor. Everything looks out of synch on some days due to poor connection etc. But it was done back when Youtube quality was no where near the quality codecs of today. If you got 10 frames per second in those days you were lucky.

well it looks like you are and i know this is just a result of poor syncing the sound to the video. i should know my pop works at square enix makers of final fantasy cut-scenes and songs. it's a common error because to make a video that is good you have to adjust the voice. and no she is not fake watch barbie XD

I like this version better than the "instrumental with lead vocals" version that is out there. I guess that's the one on the CD? The phasing effect sounded a little "gimmicky" to me. I guess I'm a purist at heart. Just a good singer and a mic is hard to beat. And it still blows my mind how good this girl was at that age.

That version you saw was the same but not as good a quality. The diference was that I had edited her riding her scooter in the beginning and the end of it to eliminate the candid shot of my butt. Also that version was made years ago when there wasn't as much in the way of good codecs for quality reproduction. But, Yikes its friggin MONO sound on youtube. Have we gone back to the days of the transistor radio plastered to one ear???????

Actually, I think that youtube does preserve the stereo sound of the uploads now, at least in some instances. I have heard performances of another favorite singer uploaded by Docsavage, that are claimed to be, and seem to my ears, stereo. I also make it a point to use the "View in High Quality" feature, whenever available.

Not trying to be wise-guy, but it's not clear to me, is she lip-sync'ing to herself or is the lead vocal coming out of her right there? I *know* she had chops to spare even at that age, it just sounds kind of solid and balanced to be singing into the camera mic with ambient room acoustics.

ahahahaha yes well "Me Confuse People???" playing the studio track low volume and using Ruby Tuby (not publicly available) A good sony camera will pick up mostly vocal so you have control and then you can mix the track up on the mix in editing and tweek the vocal seperately. This of course can sound too good to be live but it is live! Sara would consider it cheating ahahahaha what does she know shes a kid :)

From a quick look, the references I see for a Ruby Tuby are about a design for a build-it-yourself amp.

I found a video with a decent stereo track of this elsewhere on YouTube, I see Sara even chimed in with some comments. A lot of people were incredulous that it was such a young girl doing the the vocal.

well no she was singing to a studio track that didn't have a vocal.............Ruby Tuby is software that will change the pattern and the sound on any mic to the characteristics of any other mic. I just never released it.

Okay, so your Ruby Tuby is like the Antares mic modeler. Soundforge also has some plugins like that as part of the Acoustic Mirror function.

Stereo has been possible on YouTube for some time, either by official or unofficial methods. Until about June or so you could upload a pre-encoded .flv file with a total audio & video rate under 350kbps and Youtube wouldn't re-encode it, hacks with a hex editor, or fooling the system with "bitrate stuffing" all of which Youtube has stopped allowing. You can still add &fmt=18 to any vid that was uploaded in stereo & now some are showing up in stereo by default.
