  • LOL! Nice usage of your '09 robot!

  • guys if thats for the 2010 comp thats illeagle you can not carry balls

team 3207 is going to atlanta!!!

  • Good luck teams for tommorow

  • the rules state that the ball has to be released when you back up, no?

  • Not that we know of. It says that if the ball moves with the robot when the robot drives backwards, then it is considered possession. But possessing one ball is legal, possessing two is not legal. So we are making ours so it can only possess one ball at a time (narrowing the ball magnet)

  • gotta love loopholes, really nice design. haha

  • "optimize" possibly the most overused word in the engineering world.

  • Person from team 1825 says:

    HOW DID YOU DO THAT!!!!!

    THATS AWSAME!

  • i thought it was 2. might be 3 though.

  • Ball can go three inches into the frame perimeter. Kicker can extend to bumper perimeter for up to two seconds, then has to stay retracted for two seconds. But this robot in the video is from 2009 so don't worry that it does not meet the rules!

  • this is a really cool idea, but how would you send a ball to the goals, after your in possession of one.

  • Plan is to have a kicker mounted so it kicks out from below that piece of wood.

  • I'm pretty sure that that is "possession," and is therefore banned by the rules.

  • Actually possession is not banned in the rules (although carrying is). Please make sure re-read Section 7, Rule G43: "ROBOT BALL POSSESSION - ROBOTS may POSSESS only one BALL at a time."

  • @sswan1 its all right if its only one ball, and as long as it stays in contact with the ground, it is legal

  • possesion isn't banned- carrying is banned

possesion is when the robot moves the ball stays in the same position relative to the robot. thats fine

carrying is when the ball is in possesion but it isn't touching the ground

    thats not legal

  • isnt that possession?

  • yep, by the rules it is

  • What is the roller material? Are you within the 3 inch rule with that configuration?

  • The roller is ABS pipe with spray rubber on it. The front of the roller is just over 3" forward of the wood that blocks the ball, so it would be able to fit in the 3 inch rule if the roller were a bit smaller diameter, and mounted at the outer edge of the robot, just inside the frame.

You have to use your imagination to see how it would work on a 2010 robot, because the concept prototype was done on a 2009 robot which is designed to play a different game.

    Does that help, Frank? :)

  • yes, thanks, now to puzzle out a way to make that center the ball better.. or make a wider kicker. We tried 09 bot as well because it has a roller with duct tape but did not have enough grip. We peeled the duct tape and exposed and earlier layer of grit paper that works really well but could have a super adverse effect on ball longevity if a ball jams. Spray rubber seems like a happy medium...need to get some. We noticed some sensitivity to roller height. ..out of space.......

  • Also, remember that you can only have the ball go within the frame by 3 inches, and it appears that it's more than that right now. That might limit how much control you have over the ball...

  • Hopefully you didn't design your robot around this... according to section 7 of the rules, "ROBOTS may not control BALL direction with active MECHANISMS above the BUMPER ZONE." I don't know if your roller counts as an "active mechanism", but some inspectors might be picky. Hope that helps - Team 2144

  • The real thing will be below the bumpers, this is just prototyping with the bot from last year.

  • Interesting concept though, both the roller idea you have and the idea of trying to control a ball in general. It'll be interesting to see what turns up at the regionals this year. BTW... what region are you guys from? We're (2144) from SF Bay Area.

  • We're in Arizona, and going to the AZ and Las Vegas regionals.

  • Cool... we're going to SVR (Silicon Valley) and Davis. Good luck in this year's competitions!

  • can't it only go 3 inches inside the chasis?

  • the ball is about 9 inches and the bumper can't be lower than 10 and the roller contacts down the back slope of the ball by an inch so it is plausible that the roller did not encroach above the bottom of the bumper. cool idea.

  • mind blown lol
