who cares what camera you used this footage is some of the best military stuff i've seen amazing . i'm considering film making myself and have done some short documentary footage around historical vw vehicles and want to do it to a higher standard .
@Nomoreidsleft YouTube won't let me update the video with a 4K version and keep the comments/stats. I would like to re-edit it with some color correction and upload that at 4K for comparison, but I need to get the time/access to a proper editing system again to do it right.
@G3SM You could just upload a new one, and post a video response. I can just imagine the hardware need to work with videos of this resolution and size. Very impractical, unless you're set up for professional production.
@whole27 On the web it might appear that way, but look at a still pulled from the 4K RAW files the RED records vs. the high compression of the Canon's codec, and there is a difference for historical use. That is the whole point of my proposal. There's also a Latitude/Dynamic Range hit when you use a camera like the Canon for this purpose. Don't get me wrong, I think the Canon's are awesome tools, but not for the long run versatility that I'd like returned to historically valuable imagery.
wow just amazing.. i just love how it looks. and its not even color corrected. i try so hard to achieve this kinda look. soo cinematic . and even the motion is perfect. how many FPS is this?.
@G3SM case in point british pathe that have digitized their archive footage and uploaded to youtube, it looks great in HD and was shot in the 1920's to today. Film and digital film are larger than any viewing format we widely use today so it will last until viewing tech surpasses it.
I love this video, I love the CSAR Pararescue video as well. You have made a country that is so desolate and barren into such a beautiful place. When I get down about my tour and the things that happened, I watch this video and see the beauty in a place I hate so much. Love your work.
Hey I understand where you're coming from, on the whole need for combat footage thing. Honestly the military has that pretty buckled down as a whole, I'm a Combat Camera Marine, and the Marines ive worked with are able to create product of cinematic quality. though not as nice as the RED One, our equipment is nothing to laugh at. I see your point but think that getting nicer equipment for service members as opposed to getting service members for the job as a whole would be better suited.
Is this a camera people buy for private use? Or is this only bought by companies, film industries etc?
I mean... yeah, the camera is expensive, but people buy cars for the price above this camera's price. Why would not a moviemaking enthusiast spend those money on a camera with this crazy quality?
@sebastianmandrean It's not perfect, is prone to vignetting, but it makes very cinematic images. The main disadvantage is that it is huge and heavy, but it was a last minute effort to get me a lens out there and the tripod was too small for that weight (that's why the pans are not consistent, i was basically supporting the weight of the camera myself while panning).
This was amazing. I have dreams of becoming a director/cinematographer/produce/editor. I really, really want film documentary style movies or short films. This really has inspired to go out and film more, even though I only have a Sony Handycam HD-XR150 (although, everyone does start somewhere). I hope one day I can own a camera like this.
@piouspoet So you want the Taliban to take over? Stop girls from going to school, public executions, no TV, No kites, no freedom. Why is it that no Muslims do anything about it when their Ummah is being persecuted and slaughtered by their own people. And then when we do the humanitarian thing they condemn us. Oh yeah, because Islam is a fascist bigoted death cult bent on the subjugation or death of all non Muslims. And it's ok when Muslims slaughter muslims and kufre!
@decimator22 YouTube still has the original file that has not playback problems they can just replace the encoded file that's up now. If they upload a new file they would lose all their views and comments.
Excellent. I completely agree with you that people have seen too much low-res handycam footage, which is ubiquitous it seems. The military could definitely use more videos like this. If not this style, at least this high of quality. Absolutely.
Perhaps when Scarlet gets released later this year it will be something we'll see more use if in situations like this.
@DearRosman I understand your perspective, and that is why I wanted to have a high quality film team, to provide footage that would interest and engage those that are so disconnected from their own military's operations. This edit was to be a promotional example of the difference in quality that I was advocating as I feel the average viewer has been inundated and become bored with random or uncoordinated handycam video footage.
As a veteran serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq on three tours since the war I must say I watch this and the emotions experienced just poured out. I just finished my contract with the US Army and decided to go into film. I just want you to know this piece is so inspiring for other film makers and yes this is an awesome camera I hope to work with on my thesis for LAFS. Thank you it was truely a pleasure watching this.
U.S. ARMY Signal Corp is getting close! They are shooting with HDSLR and other HD cameras already. I'm hoping to branch signal as an officer in about a year. Did you have any problems with clearance or security and getting the footage? I plan on deploying in about 2 years and I would love to bring my camera gear along.
i seriously cannot understand how someone could possibly dislike this video... unless it was an accident. This is beautiful :*]. So much emotion and life captured.
PLEASE upload this with YouTube's new original resolution feature. Already this is THE best looking video I've seen on YouTube (not to mention VERY well edited as well!).
Damn great video! Served 6 &1/2 years as an H-60 chief with 159th CAB, 101st Airborne. Made tours to both theaters. Lots of memories, lots of great times. Loved the job, but had to get away from the Army. Met some of the best damn people while I flew that I will ever meet in my entire life. Still wish I could go back and fly in theater. I miss it. I miss crewing. But I'm off doing bigger and better things now. God speed, Air Assault, and Shoot Em' In The Face!
This is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this! I am a young guy who is really interested in film and cinematography - any tips for someone like myself?
Very nice footage and the music is really touching. I'm just a paramilitary chopper pilot providing SAR coverage in the South China Sea. I admired you guys for what you are doing and what you believed in. Fly safe!
@RenoGregory yeah, try 25 grand for just the camera body. any of the lenses will run you an additional four grand. add a memory unit for another four hundred so, some batteries and a charger will cost you another two grand or so. NOW you are ready to shoot. I'd never buy one of these but I'd definitely rent three of them to shoot a movie.
This is a wonderful video. I remember watching it long ago, then recently I remembered it and went searching for it here. I couldn't find it. Then luckily somebody posted it on a forum a few days later.
We need more videos like this one. This is a true tribute to our soldiers, unlike those actions clips with lousy rock music.
great video man it really shows what life is like in the war aside from all the shoot em up gung ho stuff. You should make another, and that view from the bird was pretty cool awesome job.
Wow man, iv never seen video of this quality come from the sandbox. Makes you feel like our right there again. Hits you right in the chest. Thank you for this Video, and i hope your able to make more, take care soldier, Hooah?
you can really appreciate what your watching when its very good quality haha. very well done video. i personally think it would be nice to see more videos in such quality, especially combat related
@ G3SM This is a very well done video. Using a RED ONE Camera is VERY impressive; that's literally the "latest and greatest." With the current tone in the Pentagon, I don't know if they will be willing to purchase tons of $25k cameras. However, they may possibly consider investing in a couple. Or would it be better to contract these duties to someone that already has the equipment?
You have some very talented skills. What editor do you use?
@huskerguy71 Thank you, and the goal is definitely not to equip everyone with these cameras, just one or two for a small team (the Scarlet/Epic will be a different story altogether, and if I had to go back as a civilian on a time crunch, I would wait for that). All the edits were via Final Cut.
@G3SM with the 10's of millions of of dollars invested in training, paying, transporting soldiers all over the world and the expensive equipment the Pentagon gives to a Platoon, (say about 50 men), if you gave 3 RED ONE Camera's I'd say they would see alot more to their combat effectiveness. Also, great Vid. Hope your cause goes well.
You do your country and your fellow soldiers a service that is really beyond the scope of comprehension with this video. I may not support war, but with people like you, who obviously care, I most certainly support you and all other military members who would fight on my behalf.
This video is both breathtaking and heart wrenching in the same package. Truly, this was just...well, words again fail me...
@scoutparker2 I have tried everything I can think of, to include talking to the command at the Pentagon, they don't appreciate the concept for some reason. As it stands now, I can return overseas to film if I can finance a few months myself as a civilian, which would be between $100,000-$200,000 for equipment/expenses. We'll see if I can find a way to pull that off...
@G3SM I'm pretty sure Michael Yon could be a great help to pinpoint you toward that goal... You have incredible skills both for filming and editing... I hope this project takes off, I really do.
@scoutparker2 well you can see their point- it's all very well if your filming exercises on a military base with nice patriotic music, but im sure they don't want another 'helicopter gunship' controversy, which is im sure what they will get if they have dozens of people running around with high def cameras...
on another note: ZOMG this guy did the music for pirates of the caribean! hes awesome!!
@ebag10 That wasn't the issue, the problem is they don't understand the technology involved, or why filming on one camera vs. another makes a difference. Everything used to be shot on film anyway, the point is to at least equal that quality for history on a small team level. It's not a concern about what's actually being shot (otherwise films like RESTREPO would never be released).
@G3SM Well that is another thing too. This going down in history~ Quality of footage like that can be archived for many years. At that resolution, you may as well then get it converted onto film to give infinite resolution (like turning a jpeg into pdf~The pixels turn into small blurred dots that add more resolution). I can see this project taking off with no questions. But how on earth did you get your hands on a RED One? Aren't they impossibly expensive?
@MichaelDaeche That is exactly the purpose behind this video, but no one in the right positions with any authority appreciated that concept unfortunately. On the civilian side I film for recruiting films, and have access to good equipment, this was something a lot of us felt strongly about, and having the RED sent to me in Afghanistan was an opportunity to important to pass up. And comparatively to competing cameras, it's not that expensive at all.
This is so incredible! We need to preserve and record more high quality images of our military personnel overseas. Like a lot of World War Two film, good quality images are being lost to time and history and with it, a vast majority of our military personnel's sacrifices from being deployed. Keep this up! Images like these will help to keep us reminded as a nation of the sacrifices of so many.
Like this if you want YOU TUBE to allow him to add a 4K version to this video!

looks prettier than it did being there. But kinda was too worried at the time to smell the roses, before getting set to some FOB in no-mans land.

What editor do you use?
huskerguy71 1 year ago 2
@huskerguy71 Thank you, and the goal is definitely not to equip everyone with these cameras, just one or two for a small team (the Scarlet/Epic will be a different story altogether, and if I had to go back as a civilian on a time crunch, I would wait for that). All the edits were via Final Cut.

@G3SM
What was your ISO set at most of the time? Also, did you have any problems with dust getting inside the camera?

@G3SM amazing footage
TheWomboCombo 1 year ago
@G3SM with the 10's of millions of of dollars invested in training, paying, transporting soldiers all over the world and the expensive equipment the Pentagon gives to a Platoon, (say about 50 men), if you gave 3 RED ONE Camera's I'd say they would see alot more to their combat effectiveness. Also, great Vid. Hope your cause goes well.

Wow...just...wow!

Incredible footage. What can be done stateside to help push DOD? Anything?
It is truly beautiful. So sappy, but I love our guys!!
scoutparker2 1 year ago 3
@scoutparker2 I have tried everything I can think of, to include talking to the command at the Pentagon, they don't appreciate the concept for some reason. As it stands now, I can return overseas to film if I can finance a few months myself as a civilian, which would be between $100,000-$200,000 for equipment/expenses. We'll see if I can find a way to pull that off...
G3SM 1 year ago
@G3SM I'm pretty sure Michael Yon could be a great help to pinpoint you toward that goal... You have incredible skills both for filming and editing... I hope this project takes off, I really do.
EpicOMGWTF 1 year ago 4
@EpicOMGWTF I have tried to contact Mr. Yon, we'll see if he shows interest in the concept.
G3SM 1 year ago
@scoutparker2 well you can see their point- it's all very well if your filming exercises on a military base with nice patriotic music, but im sure they don't want another 'helicopter gunship' controversy, which is im sure what they will get if they have dozens of people running around with high def cameras...
on another note: ZOMG this guy did the music for pirates of the caribean! hes awesome!!
ebag10 1 year ago
@ebag10 That wasn't the issue, the problem is they don't understand the technology involved, or why filming on one camera vs. another makes a difference. Everything used to be shot on film anyway, the point is to at least equal that quality for history on a small team level. It's not a concern about what's actually being shot (otherwise films like RESTREPO would never be released).
G3SM 1 year ago
@G3SM Well that is another thing too. This going down in history~ Quality of footage like that can be archived for many years. At that resolution, you may as well then get it converted onto film to give infinite resolution (like turning a jpeg into pdf~The pixels turn into small blurred dots that add more resolution). I can see this project taking off with no questions. But how on earth did you get your hands on a RED One? Aren't they impossibly expensive?
MichaelDaeche 1 year ago
@MichaelDaeche That is exactly the purpose behind this video, but no one in the right positions with any authority appreciated that concept unfortunately. On the civilian side I film for recruiting films, and have access to good equipment, this was something a lot of us felt strongly about, and having the RED sent to me in Afghanistan was an opportunity to important to pass up. And comparatively to competing cameras, it's not that expensive at all.

the quality is amazing
looks like a movie
also its a touching video

This is so incredible! We need to preserve and record more high quality images of our military personnel overseas. Like a lot of World War Two film, good quality images are being lost to time and history and with it, a vast majority of our military personnel's sacrifices from being deployed. Keep this up! Images like these will help to keep us reminded as a nation of the sacrifices of so many.

With a RED ONE you doesn´t have to color correct.
This just looks brilliant. No movie effects, just the reality.
This made me want to join the army.
