  • Like this if you want YOU TUBE to allow him to add a 4K version to this video!

  • Quite frankly one of the best youtube videos in existence.

Although for some reason I experienced some lag when watching it in HD :( not cool... must be a youtube fail =/

But man, that makes me feel proud to be American :3

God Bless our troops! Thanks for the great video sir! *salutes*

  • I love this footage. Terrific cinematography. But for some reason it looks like 16mm than red. Maybe its the colour but apart from that i love it

  • looks like a real movie

  • Great video!! :)

  • Great Vídeo!!! :D Yes or Not?

  • Good video......thanks!!

  • A very touching video. And the music is spot on! What is the name of this song?

  • If I had a dollar for every pixel in this video, I'd be rich.

  • who cares what camera you used this footage is some of the best military stuff i've seen amazing . i'm considering film making myself and have done some short documentary footage around historical vw vehicles and want to do it to a higher standard .

  • @NukemHigh 225

The Mi-17's are Russian civilians , Sorry. The Mi-24's in country are Polish.

  • @NukemHigh 225

    The Mi-17's are Polish.

  • Good Ole Bagram

  • The Mi-17, was that Russian or Australian?

  • Great video. Now that YouTube supports 4K resolution, why not re-upload it in original resolution.

  • @Nomoreidsleft YouTube won't let me update the video with a 4K version and keep the comments/stats. I would like to re-edit it with some color correction and upload that at 4K for comparison, but I need to get the time/access to a proper editing system again to do it right.

  • @G3SM You could just upload a new one, and post a video response. I can just imagine the hardware need to work with videos of this resolution and size. Very impractical, unless you're set up for professional production.

  • @whole27 On the web it might appear that way, but look at a still pulled from the 4K RAW files the RED records vs. the high compression of the Canon's codec, and there is a difference for historical use. That is the whole point of my proposal. There's also a Latitude/Dynamic Range hit when you use a camera like the Canon for this purpose. Don't get me wrong, I think the Canon's are awesome tools, but not for the long run versatility that I'd like returned to historically valuable imagery.

  • @G3SM

wow just amazing.. i just love how it looks. and its not even color corrected. i try so hard to achieve this kinda look. soo cinematic . and even the motion is perfect. how many FPS is this?.

  • @G3SM case in point british pathe that have digitized their archive footage and uploaded to youtube, it looks great in HD and was shot in the 1920's to today. Film and digital film are larger than any viewing format we widely use today so it will last until viewing tech surpasses it.

  • I love this video, I love the CSAR Pararescue video as well. You have made a country that is so desolate and barren into such a beautiful place. When I get down about my tour and the things that happened, I watch this video and see the beauty in a place I hate so much. Love your work.

    AKE AKE KIA KAHA

  • @nzniggy Thanks, I appreciate the comment.

  • Hey I understand where you're coming from, on the whole need for combat footage thing. Honestly the military has that pretty buckled down as a whole, I'm a Combat Camera Marine, and the Marines ive worked with are able to create product of cinematic quality. though not as nice as the RED One, our equipment is nothing to laugh at. I see your point but think that getting nicer equipment for service members as opposed to getting service members for the job as a whole would be better suited.

  • You did a beautiful job.

  • As terrible as war is, this is amazing!

  • Is this a camera people buy for private use? Or is this only bought by companies, film industries etc?

I mean... yeah, the camera is expensive, but people buy cars for the price above this camera's price. Why would not a moviemaking enthusiast spend those money on a camera with this crazy quality?

    Just curious...

  • U.S. = UNITED SOULS (of America)

  • Why didn't you upload in 4k?

  • @blackbird794 Great video btw :)

  • Signal corps deserves better! This is just amazing.

  • wow even at a good cinama quality it still looks like it sucks there lol hell even when your there it sucks to look at

  • This has probably been asked, but looking through nearly 500 comments seems unnecessary.

I was wondering, how long did this take in the end? Between Taking the video and editing it all in post.

  • @paytontheguy This was shot over a 5 day period that I had the camera while there, and took a couple hours to edit in Final Cut Pro.

  • This is AMAZING footage looks like something that should be on national geographic. Thanks for your service!

  • Is it only me who prefers the look of the raw footage to colour corrected footage?

  • What do you think about the Angenieux 20-120? If I have to buy a single PL zoom, is it a good choice?

  • @sebastianmandrean It's not perfect, is prone to vignetting, but it makes very cinematic images. The main disadvantage is that it is huge and heavy, but it was a last minute effort to get me a lens out there and the tripod was too small for that weight (that's why the pans are not consistent, i was basically supporting the weight of the camera myself while panning).

  • This was amazing. I have dreams of becoming a director/cinematographer/produce/editor. I really, really want film documentary style movies or short films. This really has inspired to go out and film more, even though I only have a Sony Handycam HD-XR150 (although, everyone does start somewhere). I hope one day I can own a camera like this.

  • thank you.

  • Fantastic! God Bless them ALL! Thank You for Your Service!

  • dude reupload this in 4k! :)

  • this camera is sooo cool.. it skipped 480p

  • That's SICK.. Really nice. Beautiful to say the least

  • holy shit! What a great video. im a little late in seeing it but it happened. Thanks for your service and hopefully soon do something like that

  • still says 720p?

  • fuck my monitor has ghosting

  • Very, Very cool video. Thanks!

  • rescue dawn

  • this is CRAZY!

  • you spent 5 days shooting it and i spent 5 days trying to load it.

  • I'm a studying photographer, but this camera makes me want to make films. Very nicely shot buddy! =]

  • RELOAD this in 4k please!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice video. I am not in the military, but i love helicopters and god camera work. Good stuff man. Keep it up!

  • I NEED TO KNOW THE NAME OF THIS SOUNDTRACK,PLEASE ANYONE

  • 42 dislikes = people who hate America

  • just INSANE!!!!!!!! B-E-A-Utiful!

  • Beautiful video! Thaks

  • Did you do any post color correction or is this the raw video?

  • @mdocday21 No, see the additional information box for full explanation.

  • Awesome video man! Great composure! One of my favs! Thank you for your support to our great nation.

  • WHOEVER DISLIKED THIS IS OBVIOUSLY STUPID

  • beautiful footage, now get out of afghanistan.

  • @piouspoet So you want the Taliban to take over? Stop girls from going to school, public executions, no TV, No kites, no freedom. Why is it that no Muslims do anything about it when their Ummah is being persecuted and slaughtered by their own people. And then when we do the humanitarian thing they condemn us. Oh yeah, because Islam is a fascist bigoted death cult bent on the subjugation or death of all non Muslims. And it's ok when Muslims slaughter muslims and kufre!

  • what does the 4k mean?

  • The RED camera, making war beautiful since whenever the fuck it came out.

  • This is a old video that was uploaded in 720p when YouTube would drop frames to save on bandwidth.

How times have changed in just three years.

I wish YouTube would re-encode the 720p HD file again if that still have the upload video.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom screw that they have 4k support now. re up it in 4k RAWR.

  • @decimator22 YouTube still has the original file that has not playback problems they can just replace the encoded file that's up now. If they upload a new file they would lose all their views and comments.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom ah ok =)

  • your very brave i suport you i solute you i............WE thank you for what you have done for us

  • actually.. I think this is pretty awesome... nice photography by the way

  • Hey,

Please contact me as soon as you can. I am part of a TV production looking for Afghanistan footage in HD...

    tseaborn@rogers.com

  • Did you ever get to flight school? Are you going to do? I'd say don't give up on that dream.

  • Excellent. I completely agree with you that people have seen too much low-res handycam footage, which is ubiquitous it seems. The military could definitely use more videos like this. If not this style, at least this high of quality. Absolutely.

Perhaps when Scarlet gets released later this year it will be something we'll see more use if in situations like this.

  • This is the best video I've come across on YouTube. Period. You really have a talent there G3SM, I hope you're putting it to good use.

    Red One камера - КРУТО)))

  • @DearRosman I understand your perspective, and that is why I wanted to have a high quality film team, to provide footage that would interest and engage those that are so disconnected from their own military's operations. This edit was to be a promotional example of the difference in quality that I was advocating as I feel the average viewer has been inundated and become bored with random or uncoordinated handycam video footage.

  • As a veteran serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq on three tours since the war I must say I watch this and the emotions experienced just poured out. I just finished my contract with the US Army and decided to go into film. I just want you to know this piece is so inspiring for other film makers and yes this is an awesome camera I hope to work with on my thesis for LAFS. Thank you it was truely a pleasure watching this.

  • Congratulation of talent you've got, keep the good work

  • Absolutely Amazing!!! It's wonderful how you put this together! You're very talented!

  • loving the shot at 3:25 :D

  • Absolutely awesome video. I wish I had that kind of talent.

  • That's pure talent my friend. Great work!

  • this is unbelievable. I had chills half way thru and didnt want it to end. job well done

  • F*CK WAR! Dont go to Army, go to Hollywood dude.

  • Fantastic video, great job!

  • Who the fuck would dislike this?

  • @St3dmanPr0ductions terrorists and fags

  • I couldn't help but cry because of the music

  • You could of made a film out of this; Nice!

  • it is amazing how good the camera is with no extra set up light. and the video is also amazingly beautiful and so very well done.

  • best video i have ever seen on youtube! congratulations

  • Awesome this video makes me feel in a way i've never feel before you're an awesome cameraman and editor. Don't stop doing stuff like this video.

  • What resolution RED cameras are shot on? MYSTERIUM-X?

  • wow, great job. I think that army deserves a team shooting around with Red :)

  • Awesome video dude.

  • U.S. ARMY Signal Corp is getting close! They are shooting with HDSLR and other HD cameras already. I'm hoping to branch signal as an officer in about a year. Did you have any problems with clearance or security and getting the footage? I plan on deploying in about 2 years and I would love to bring my camera gear along.

  • I found this video by searching for random Red footage on YT, and by the end, was trying my hardest to hold back the tears. Beautiful video!

  • i seriously cannot understand how someone could possibly dislike this video... unless it was an accident. This is beautiful :*]. So much emotion and life captured.

  • what are u ? a soldier or a movie maker??

    i like them both

    great job

    whats the nameof the song.?

  • piss on you 3-D cinema

    this is real

  • amazing!

  • amazing quality

  • PLEASE upload this with YouTube's new original resolution feature. Already this is THE best looking video I've seen on YouTube (not to mention VERY well edited as well!).

    Absolutely wonderful job!

  • Damn great video! Served 6 &1/2 years as an H-60 chief with 159th CAB, 101st Airborne. Made tours to both theaters. Lots of memories, lots of great times. Loved the job, but had to get away from the Army. Met some of the best damn people while I flew that I will ever meet in my entire life. Still wish I could go back and fly in theater. I miss it. I miss crewing. But I'm off doing bigger and better things now. God speed, Air Assault, and Shoot Em' In The Face!

  • I hope you pursue after film. You definitely have an instinct and heart for such a venture. Well done.

  • This is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this! I am a young guy who is really interested in film and cinematography - any tips for someone like myself?

  • this should be a movie

  • Great work, thanx for sharing!

  • you captured the essence of your experience...AIRBORNE.

  • G3SM, you are awesome! Your video's are the best!

  • G3SM Re-upload this video because the new youtube supports the full 4K resolution now :)

  • @Tjechi do you have a 4k monitor? or a pc that can handle 4k?

  • Excellent video.

  • Very nice footage and the music is really touching. I'm just a paramilitary chopper pilot providing SAR coverage in the South China Sea. I admired you guys for what you are doing and what you believed in. Fly safe!

  • Amazing footage. Amazing camera.

  • The social network was so amazing by using this camera

  • very well put together video

i love Red, now if only i had an extra $12,000 lying around.....

  • @RenoGregory yeah, try 25 grand for just the camera body. any of the lenses will run you an additional four grand. add a memory unit for another four hundred so, some batteries and a charger will cost you another two grand or so. NOW you are ready to shoot. I'd never buy one of these but I'd definitely rent three of them to shoot a movie.

  • Amazingly clear video. Stunning.

  • This is a wonderful video. I remember watching it long ago, then recently I remembered it and went searching for it here. I couldn't find it. Then luckily somebody posted it on a forum a few days later.

We need more videos like this one. This is a true tribute to our soldiers, unlike those actions clips with lousy rock music.

    God Bless our troops!

  • the first guy in the left side at 1:55 is grabbing his peacock

  • great video man it really shows what life is like in the war aside from all the shoot em up gung ho stuff. You should make another, and that view from the bird was pretty cool awesome job.

  • Wow man, iv never seen video of this quality come from the sandbox. Makes you feel like our right there again. Hits you right in the chest. Thank you for this Video, and i hope your able to make more, take care soldier, Hooah?

  • I got a throb in my chest after watching this.

  • Oh... THIS is why I want to buy a RED One eventually. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Thank You for serving our Country.

Thank You for bringing us this film.

Thank You for being so brave.

  • 3:25

    beautiful landscape.

    beautiful definition.

    beautiful shot.

    and a machine gun.

  • Amazing Footage... amazing....

  • looks prettier than it did being there. But kinda was too worried at the time to smell the roses, before getting set to some FOB in no-mans land.

  • bit incresent music, but fine footage!

  • Thumbs up, G3SM, - it's a beautifull video you've made

  • breathtaking.

  • excellent excellent shot at 4:00.. well done

  • the shot composition is beautiful! You truly are a film maker.

  • Beautiful...Just absolutely 100% beautiful.

  • you can really appreciate what your watching when its very good quality haha. very well done video. i personally think it would be nice to see more videos in such quality, especially combat related

  • Excellent footage - thank you for this.

  • nice video, great music too. love the editing

  • @ G3SM This is a very well done video. Using a RED ONE Camera is VERY impressive; that's literally the "latest and greatest." With the current tone in the Pentagon, I don't know if they will be willing to purchase tons of $25k cameras. However, they may possibly consider investing in a couple. Or would it be better to contract these duties to someone that already has the equipment?

You have some very talented skills. What editor do you use?

  • @huskerguy71 Thank you, and the goal is definitely not to equip everyone with these cameras, just one or two for a small team (the Scarlet/Epic will be a different story altogether, and if I had to go back as a civilian on a time crunch, I would wait for that). All the edits were via Final Cut.

  • @G3SM

What was your ISO set at most of the time? Also, did you have any problems with dust getting inside the camera?

  • @G3SM amazing footage

  • @G3SM with the 10's of millions of of dollars invested in training, paying, transporting soldiers all over the world and the expensive equipment the Pentagon gives to a Platoon, (say about 50 men), if you gave 3 RED ONE Camera's I'd say they would see alot more to their combat effectiveness. Also, great Vid. Hope your cause goes well.

  • God bless you, and all of those who fight for America. Excellent video.

  • This is very moving~!!! beautiful...

  • Wow...just...wow!

You do your country and your fellow soldiers a service that is really beyond the scope of comprehension with this video. I may not support war, but with people like you, who obviously care, I most certainly support you and all other military members who would fight on my behalf.

This video is both breathtaking and heart wrenching in the same package. Truly, this was just...well, words again fail me...

  • Incredible footage. What can be done stateside to help push DOD? Anything?

It is truly beautiful. So sappy, but I love our guys!!

  • @scoutparker2 I have tried everything I can think of, to include talking to the command at the Pentagon, they don't appreciate the concept for some reason. As it stands now, I can return overseas to film if I can finance a few months myself as a civilian, which would be between $100,000-$200,000 for equipment/expenses. We'll see if I can find a way to pull that off...

  • @G3SM I'm pretty sure Michael Yon could be a great help to pinpoint you toward that goal... You have incredible skills both for filming and editing... I hope this project takes off, I really do.

  • @EpicOMGWTF I have tried to contact Mr. Yon, we'll see if he shows interest in the concept.

  • @scoutparker2 well you can see their point- it's all very well if your filming exercises on a military base with nice patriotic music, but im sure they don't want another 'helicopter gunship' controversy, which is im sure what they will get if they have dozens of people running around with high def cameras...

on another note: ZOMG this guy did the music for pirates of the caribean! hes awesome!!

  • @ebag10 That wasn't the issue, the problem is they don't understand the technology involved, or why filming on one camera vs. another makes a difference. Everything used to be shot on film anyway, the point is to at least equal that quality for history on a small team level. It's not a concern about what's actually being shot (otherwise films like RESTREPO would never be released).

  • @G3SM Well that is another thing too. This going down in history~ Quality of footage like that can be archived for many years. At that resolution, you may as well then get it converted onto film to give infinite resolution (like turning a jpeg into pdf~The pixels turn into small blurred dots that add more resolution). I can see this project taking off with no questions. But how on earth did you get your hands on a RED One? Aren't they impossibly expensive?

  • @MichaelDaeche That is exactly the purpose behind this video, but no one in the right positions with any authority appreciated that concept unfortunately. On the civilian side I film for recruiting films, and have access to good equipment, this was something a lot of us felt strongly about, and having the RED sent to me in Afghanistan was an opportunity to important to pass up. And comparatively to competing cameras, it's not that expensive at all.

  • the quality is amazing

    looks like a movie

    also its a touching video

  • This is so incredible! We need to preserve and record more high quality images of our military personnel overseas. Like a lot of World War Two film, good quality images are being lost to time and history and with it, a vast majority of our military personnel's sacrifices from being deployed. Keep this up! Images like these will help to keep us reminded as a nation of the sacrifices of so many.

  • dude that picture of you is B.A.

  • wow thats beautiful

  • Very inspirational! hope the DoD hears you out!

  • OMG, so... amazing, not unrealistic like IDK top gun or something. just outstanding!

  • never comes war will in this world

  • absolutely top notch so moving and tranquil rather than the usual killing and noise

  • You've captured it so uniquely. It's not all about abuse of power and murder.

  • ahh.... the breath taking wondrous beauty of colonization.

  • one man's liberty is another man's hell, nice change from the usual rap or country music, I liked the 360p version.

  • oh my god possably the best and most moving thing i have seen in years good job

  • This is awesome, bro. I really hope the DoD takes interest in this. You rock! Love the RED ONE quality too! This will take you far!

  • With a RED ONE you doesn´t have to color correct.

This just looks brilliant. No movie effects, just the reality.

This made me want to join the army.

  • You sir are AMAZING!

  • This is one incredible video. I hope you're able to produce a feature length documentary. Absolutely touching.

  • amazing dude, you are really talented.

  • This has gotta be the BEST video I've seen on YT EVER!!! No shit!

This is the stuff the press should be showing... normal GI's just doing their job the best that they can....in HD...

  • from what the media spits out you think Afghanistan is all sand but its actually... quite beautiful.
