I love this track - On holiday in Greece circa 1982 we catch a bus to a remote village in the mountains. We walk around and there's this little music shop selling chart music and Greek Folk music. I get talking to the owner and he asks me what music I like , I say Zep, Joni M, etc and Tommy Bolin. His eyes light up and he says wait a minute. He takes the Greek Folk music off the turntable and plays this - I cry !!
I remember being young listening to this. Just ready to graduate high school in 1975. Windows open on the car with this song blaring, lookin for chicks. This was a long song but could have went for an hour. I bought this album cause Mouzon was on it.
I think it, again showed his vast talent, creativity and understanding. Feeling, passion, not just a beat. He could play slow and still be powerful.
Tommy was awesome, more of a Proto-Jazz-HardRocker than a Fusion player in my opinion-under the latter category I'd include other greats like Mclaughlin, Dimeola,Connnors and Holdsworth.
TOMMY BOLIN is perhaps the prototype of what has been called the jazz rock / fusion guitarists . Three years after the death of Jimi Hendrix, the world of electric guitar seemed "dull" and Jeff Beck was not really what it is today. And Spectrum appeared. Much like me at that time were smiling again with some hope.
@abluerambler I love Tommy Bolin for his uniqueness and adaptability. He was a force of nature. I beg to diifer on prototype of fusion guitarists..You had established fusion guitarists Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin. Carlos Santana is another overlloked fusion guitarist of that era also. Bolin no doubt has great accolades for his natural genius. I would say John Frusciante of RHCP reminds me of a modern day Bolin in some aspects
é por causa de guitarristas como hendrix, bolin, jan akerman e outros que nao consigo acreditar que tem gente que diz que steve vai e satriani sao deuses.ora ,vao se foder seus cabeças de merda!
Tommy opened for Jeff Beck for a time, it's said Beck stood at the side of the stage and watched him every show before he would go on. THAT is respect.
there were 3 groups in Colorado during those times - the potheads, the chemicals, the hard drugs, they each hung out with their own group, but not the other groups. so much more could have been played...

nobody sounded like BOLIN-he was on his own-his gadgets/that funky style of his.....and he could play fast and make the guitar sceam......pity he and deep purple couldn't have worked things out and made another couple of albums.
MY GOD....WHAT A UNBELEIVABLE GUITAR SOLO ON gOLDEN RAINBOWS.....EVERYTIME I HEAR IT MY HEART STARTS RACING....SO INTENCE....SO MUCH TASTE...FIRE....SPEED.....YOU NAME IT.
gOD...I MISS TOMMY BOLIN SO FUCKIN MUCH...RIP TOMMY.
Why compare Tommy B? He stood out on his own thats why he was in great demand because of imagination and creativity. You can hear the influences in his playing and that goes for all guitarist from Allman to Zappa.
wow pretty high praise for Tommy, i love him too since i first heard him in '76 but like Santana he only plays in a couple keys and in a couple time sigs.. David Sancious know primarily for his key board is a far more accomplished and versitile player.
Tommy Bolin is beyond rock guitarists. He was a brilliant musician who happend to play guitar. Hendrix was more popular and probably as talented, but his work is not comprable to Tommy Bolin. I love Hendrix.
I am sure many will disagree, but I think Tommy Bolin is in the league with Mile Davis, Tarrega, etc.
Holdsworth/ Coryell weren't playing on albums put out by a drummer---remember, this is Alphonse Mouzon's LP, not Tommy's. His role was not to overwhelm. The first is a "mood" song, not a "showcase all your riffs" song. And the second is plain old mid 70's funk. Neither type was done by AH or LC. In 1989, Billy Cobham told me that Tommy was the brightest, freshest, most spontaneous guitarist he ever worked with, and that everything just came naturally to him. And BC worked with them all!!!
Holdsworth did a lot of sidemanwork for drummers in the 70s: jon hiseman (tempest), tony williams (believe it, million dollar legs) and bill bruford (feels good to me, one of a kind), pierre moerlen´s gong (gazeuse, expresso II) come to mind...
My point was that Holdsworth and Coryell didn't get popular by putting out albums as sidemen to drummers, they were the main players on almost all of their releases and could play whatever they wanted to. Tommy Bolin wasn't running the show on Mind Transplant and didn't really show too much of his stuff on that LP. But since his releases are rare and limited in number, we fans have learned to appreciate his scaled-back contributions to other musician's works.
TOMMY BOLIN was the greatest Guitar player of ALL TIME....next to Jimi Hendrix....thats the way I feel about his versatility in his guitar playing...he could play ANYTHING...and do it great !!!! R.I.P Tommy...I miss you so much bro....love ya. " The Bolinman"
@Joemusic1390 ...I AGREE WITH YOU 100 % JOE.....I MISS TOMMY ...WHAT AN INTENCE GUITAR SOLO IN GOLDEN RAINBOWS....SO MUCH FIRE....SPEED....TASTE...YOU NAME IT.
atten kentommybolin...your right brother...that spectrum lp sends CHILLS DOWN My SPINE...ALL THe WAY TO MY SCRODEM SACK....lol.....LOVE YA TOMMY...ALWAYS HAVE....ALWAYS WILL>
It wouldn't be fair to compare this to Frank Gambale or Scott Henderson because they came later. However, Allan Holdsworth and Larry Coryell were around at this time and they were much better than this.
Al Mouzon was one of fav drummers when i WAS 10! I'm like a white scottish Brazilian nazi too! Check out him playing with Weather Report and all the Fusion bands of the time. I luv him! The guitar playing on this song is incredible! Thanx for sharing! I'm taxiboysdrummer and I'm an Alcoholic and drug addict, porno maker and girl luver! Also into Brasil! Girls, Drugs, Booze and Crazy Mini Monkeys! I luv MiniMonkeys! Moving there next year... Bobby taxiboysdrummer
I bought this LP when it came out for the 3 guitarists on it - Tommy, Lee Ritenour, Jay Graydon. Teach this song to my bass students. Used to do Snowbound & Mind Transplant in 76 with a drummer I ended up in a band with later. I also burned this and Spectum to CDs.
I have this album and its always been a favorite...just recently purchased a turn table that allows me to play and download my albums onto my pc where I can then burn a CD! I now have this on CD along with all of Bolins works on CD. Saw him in Denver at Momoth Gardens several times way back when!!! Fabulous guitar player....what a waste.
I have to say besides the Spectrum album is is a close second Tommy's work is simply amazing!! All should pick up THE ULTIMATE it's a great comp of Tommy's music from Zepher to Deep Purple.. I was lucky to pick it up years ago on vinyl and just the booklet was worth the price.. Try to pick it up on ebay but make sure the booklet is included.. Dreamer I know what you're thinking!!!!
Never have heard this...........Great western american lead/ fusion funk. He was still at the top of his game although on Spectrum he was at his nastiest hard rock although this was close. And I thought it was john mclaughlin back in 1973.
Hi Posttoastie, Max here, thanx for the post. If I could, I would like to make a request, could you post carbon dioxide, I cant find this album? Its gotta be rare? thanx again!
Bolin had heart and soul. I think it is really cool that after he dropped out of H. S. he hitchhiked around, helped form a great under-rated psychedlic band called Zephyr (Candy Givens was a great vocalist), and then had a pretty impressive career all before 25 years of age. He was like Hendrix in the way he lived, from what I have read up on him, very much like a vagabond, all about the music. You can hear it in the words to his tunes.
Id have to say tht Tommy was probably the seond Hendrix, what i mean is that we probably didnt get to hear his greatest work, he was JUST about to give us it...and he left. I always think, when I listen to him, WHAT was he going to do next. I just think we re lucky to STILL have what he did before he left.
Tommy's guitar: masterful, drenched in emotion, beautiful as nothing else I've ever heard.

Anything he played on sounded like it became a Tommy Bolin album.
James Gang "Bang" is fantastic. A great Tommy Bolin record, like "Come Taste.,"Spectrum", "Teaser", etc. Much missed by all.
By the way, I'm going to look for this record tomorrow.
