Thank you, brilliant version. This song was the highlight in terms of intensity of his Villa Montalvo shows this year I was thrilled beyond belief. Thanks again; wow the singing at the end....he is too underrated, by FAR. Not just his totally amazing guitar playing but his singing and songwriting too, the man is a genius.
there arent many people in the world who understand music like richard thompson. his cadences and choices of notes is haunting. his skill in folk guitar is inspiring..(if not a little annoying because ill never be that good!!!! :) ) :)
I first saw Richard Thompson in 1989, and I have yet to be wowed by a single guitar player in the same fashion.
Too many suffer from 'out there' syndrome, where in they get solo-ing, and rely on the band behind them to provide cues to get back in time, and all their noodling gets them lost (like Charlie Parker or John Coltrane when the drug takes hold). But Thompson had impecable timing, always comes back in on the beat. Beautiful playing. I wish he were more successful, but would he solo tour?
I think maybe Richard's a little tired of this one. I was at one of the all request shows last month and it was the only request he refused to play except for a couple others he felt he couldn't play.
... Why is there not more comments!? This is INSANE, fuck.. I MUST learn to do that! I never fucking thought about using a plectrum AND finger picking.. fuck!!!
This *is* a pretty spectacular version. I suspect there's not more comments because there's already several versions of this song on YouTube, and a lot of people, like me, just never got around to watching all of this one.
Whew! Pardon me while I pick myself up from the floor.... Only RT could coax such smoke from an acoustic guitar. Brilliant finish, too. Thanks for the vid!

Fucking expert, that.

Back in the seventies us acolytes had a standing joke:
"Richard Thompson". "Who"?
What REALLY annoys me is that he writes songs as well. Takes me all my time to remember the Sweetex in my tea...

Best version so far. But since RT continues to get better, just wait until next year and there will be a better one!
Maybe if the twits at Rolling Stone saw this, they'd rank RT a little higher than #19 on their infamous list.

As far as the "hybrid" picking he's using, he does this on electric too - check out some of the other videos on YouTube for examples.

Let's not forget that RT's old pal Simon Nicol is a hybrid picker too. Imagine two of 'em in the same band. I miss Fairport!
