Loving Cup off of the album in question has to be one of my fav stones songs ever. I love how they sound progressively more and more wasted as it goes. muahaha
Picked up the original LP when it came out in 72 when in 6th grade. Was amazed at the versatility. Last summer picked up new deluxe set with unreleased tracks. I really like it but was bummed that Exile Blues wasnt included on it being that I really thought it should have ended the unreleased portion of the CD. Thanks for post!
@rockerjcc Nope, rockerjcc; not interested in your review. If you were "underwhelmed" by Exile on Man St. then you don't know shit about Music. Why would I waste my time or pollute my mind with your pompous ramblings?
@rockerjcc no one cares, especially if you gave it one listen and expected tracks like sympathy for the devil, Exile grows on you over time and the only reviews ever worth reading are those from people who actually spent time with it.
classic??? i don know..a great rock record..too new to be a classic...maybe in a few...seems like yesterday....guess this period is a classic....guess i'm old
I'd trade a bunch of old stuff from the vaults for a new Stones studio album easily. It's kind of sad they don't seem very interested in new work anymore. Obviously the big money is in touring, but I'd rather see them cut these huge tours in half and then try to record a new album.
You know the age old "desert island album" quandary; if I had to pick right this second, it'd be an easy answer. I absolutely love this album. When I take the time to actually put the CD in my car, it stays playing for months at a time. It's hardly worth plugging in a device when I have this so readily available, and solid through and through. If there's filler, I've grown to love every note of it.
@KnqsX - I like your comment - I really am amazed how people rave about this album. But ironically, me too, "I just don't hear it."!!!
I say "murky" when I compare with a track like Under My Thumb, or Let It Bleed (the song). Those, to me are absolute perfection. And, globally, those albums are more focussed than Exile - that is, to me... But rock on and turn it up man!
Exile has a couple of great songs, and many great riffs (Soul Survivor is for me one of the greatest in rock). There is a great album in there, but you have to cut through the number of songs/influences, the length of the songs, all the superfulous backing vocals, and excessive horns. It's greatest quality is the worship all forms of black music, but the result is overdone and murky. Aftermath, Let It Bleed, Beggars Banquet would easily be in my faves before this one!
@yvamarquer- W/RESPECT -You've got to be shiting me.!!- Exile was a mix of different styles, but still remaining true to the FEELING that Blues/rock/country inspires. Music DEVELOPS/GROWS - and it's done with true inspiration...and done beautifully - or it's the same old re-hash of stuff that's come before - I think (from your comment)...that you fancy yourself a 'purist'...and therefore not open to change....which is what music is all about -change...changing into something real and beautiful.
@farsajjj - my theory is that people like Exile so much because they've simply spent their entire lives listening to all the other albums. Amazing albums, but that got very much overplayed on the radio, in restaurants, everywhere.... So people go back and "discover" Exile, which they know much less, and feel like they have a new Stones do dig. That's great, and I agree, in a way that's change!
great post... in my opinion, let it bleed & beggars' were better records, but there is no denying the fact that exile has the most great songs of any stones' release! i'll give it that!
you know how you say this is my favorite song or album of all time and its just another catchy pop song? Well this my favorite album of all time of ALL TIME...Exile just has the staying power....cheers big ears!!!!
Why this album so popular, I can see zero know singles, and no real stone hits none on any complielation, why do people praise such albums, like the Beatles White Album???
But its not about one paticular song its about the album as a whole and the music it delivers and what message it represents and brings, good story album.
Well said, hardly any artist nowadays do these kind of albums. These kind of album is a kind of art, and music is suppose to be like this. Most artist out there today care more about the commericial perspective than the artistic perspective...
"exile on main st" = "stinky fingers" b-sides = fuckin' borin'.............. even jagger himself (that old cunt) said it was a pretty bad album...........
Hope you guys appreciate the great photographs that were taken by John Van Hamersveld, which is why this video is here. One of the great Rock & Roll artist of all time. He recently did the cover for the Cream Reunion CD. Great stuff John!
Weird - a promo for an album that doesn't contain a note of music FROM the album! This was a song released on a flexi-disc given away with NME, which tries to cram as many of the album's titles as possible into a boogie-woogie tune, and turns out wonderfully well!
