The DLR route to International seems to follow a different route than the NLL route, although its exact route will only become clear when the line opens.
I think the DLR's 3 car trains will travel at 5 minute intervals, alternately going to Woolwich Arsenal via City Airport and Beckton. That should cope with normal traffic, but as for the Olympics, well I suspect the whole capacity issue remains 'hopes and guesses'.
@ingravegreen ah but... the DLR branch from Canning Town extends through Stratford Low Level to Stratford International. The track is there, its all built and as I understand it the line will be opening within a month (ie: during August 2011).
I just wish I'd filmed the NLL trains south of Stratford... could have used the footage in another 'contrasts' film with DLR trains.
For a 'train spotters' film that was a really interesting bit of recent history. The tallest building around at the time seemed to be the 7 storey office block (4:32) which is now 9 storey Gerry Raffles Square, where I live. Now dwarfed by Westfield etc..Funny how memories of the 70's and 80's have that same soft edge as the super 8! Thanks for posting.
hi micheal glad ,now you remember me and yes vic was my first driver lol , now all we have to do is put faces to each other,i think i remember you too but untill i see a pic not sure mate , yes they were the best time of my railway career, and am still on there at east ham depot now lol, im on face book (mark ptrick smyth ,) norway ,nice , , you have my facebook now add me or request for me to add you , chat about the old days mate
Because of the Olympics the station is now changing even more. Platforms are being widened, extra walkways / steps to platforms built, new platforms built, the third (original) passageway under the platforms which was closed when the Jubilee Line was built reopened, and more.
The derelict very old buildings on the V shaped platforms have been removed, and (sadly) the tea room (which I feel sure was also a pub) on the eastbound Central Line / local trains mainline platform No.6 + 8 has been removed.
@citytransportinfo I would LOVE to see it all again - there was a long tunnel under the staition which Drivers would walk through on their way to Stratford depot - it was a bit spooky and reminded me of an old Dr Who series
@rebelyelleasyrider I'm curious - why is it harder to board the train now? I often use the new platform to access the Jubilee Line, it makes life easier for me! And in the evenings, if I arrive on an Overground train and want to collect a free Evening Standard from outside the stn I use the new walkway at the eastern end of the station and walk through a train (plat 3 to 3a) to reach the main exit, as its a lot less crowded than using the direct passageways from the Overground platforms.
@citytransportinfo well, you get people getting on from both sides at rush hour so even if you're the only person on the new platform, you'll get pushed off by the people on the old platform. its a nightmare
@michael72401 hi micheal i was a second man at stratford , i started 27/11 /78 and was a driver assistant mark smyth , just woundered if we knew each other those were the good old days remember the tunnel to get to work ?
@depotopp At first i thought,,"Hmm ,,, er,,,, and suddenly "YES I DO REMEMBER YOU ,,,CLEARLY". You had Vic Appleton as your first mate in link 10 just as i did when i was in link 10.
They WERE the days wern't they?
I now live in Norway and have been doing so since 1997. Am going down memory lane. So how are you mark? Just think, the shanty etc is no more, ,,long since demolished,,,,hehe, but i miss the place and those days. Are you on FACEBOOK? silly question maybe. Speak soon
I was born in 1980 lived in stratford when i was 4 up until the age off 11 Im not a train spotter was kinda hoping for footage of the surrounding area, ya know kinda trip down memory lane. Any one know where i could find somethin like that or maybe leton and walthamstow?
I worked at Stratford Station when I left school in 84/85, it was a fantastic place with the DMUs and the 47's 37's and that running about. I used to hang about a lot at the low level platfords where the DMUs are. I miss that place so much. Thank you for recording that for us.
What a great piece of footage, your really see the difference back then and now. Looks so much nicer, now there is so much sign pollution its awful, 'don't do this', 'don't do that'. No this, no that allowed etc, the railway authorities/government has got us like donkeys. Stratford Station looks so much better here, right now as of (2009) it is a COMPLETE MESS.
I really miss those old P86/P89 stock DLR trains. I wish there was more footage of them around here, especially with cab rides and sound. I'd love to see those bat-wing doors in action!
If I remember correctly they are still used in Essen, Germany - and still have the bat wing doors!
Oh and although they were sold from london because they did not meet our firesafety regulations for travelling underground, in Essen they are also used underground!
I posted this in the other video with old DLR footage - does anyone know the exact year when the last P86s and P89s ran on the DLR? I know they were sold to Germany in the mid 1990's, but I seem to remember them both being taken out of service in 1996, after which only B90/B92s remained. Could someone confirm that? I could've sworn that I rode on P86s in 1995 or thereabouts.
nice to see te 2EPBs on the north london line tese platforms are now part of the DLR extension

wish i had a cam corder in the 80s
oggy1953 2 years ago
I wish I had one now. All I have is a camera which also films in video mode - with low quality mono sound.
Its still better than nothing...
btw, in the 1980's I was using super 8 cine film, as camcorder technology was not good enough.

The fast through tracks have been reduced from 4 to 3, but now all serve platforms.
Nowadays the Jubilee Line comes here... etc.
