I am an orthodox Christian and I love this film. I don't find it offensive to my views of Jesus, nor does it threaten my belief structure in Jesus and God. I don’t protest this film because it shows a white Jesus when we clearly know he could not have possibly looked like a light skinned European (Dafoe is still great) nor do I despise it because Nikos Kazantzakis had the courage to portray Jesus as he was, fully man and fully God.
This film has the courage to address the question “If Jesus was a man, what assumptions can be made for how a man, perfect and without sin, dealt with the temptation of sinning. Sin being something that all men face it is not possible to think that Jesus was never tempted.
To believe that would be to completely disregard the fact that Jesus was a man. The struggles that it shows him face are events that are recorded in the bible. I feel it is a completely beautiful work of art. Although there is an angle of artistic license, Scorsese I feel captures the intense struggle of a man who knew he was to save the world
The end result of the movie is still the same as Mel Gibson’s, therefore historically accurate. And as far as biblical references go, I feel the film represents them as best as any other source possible could. To me, as a Christian and fighting my own daily spiritual battle, it is not so far fetched to think that Satan could have tried to tempt the son of God.
