I loved Ben as Daredevil even in the Theatrical Cut. I hate it when an actor suddenly decides to say they didn't like doing a role because others don't like it, they never say that to a film that everyone loves.
After watching your review, I took your advice and searched for a copy of the Director's Cut. I had seen the theatrical cut on TV, and I enjoyed it, but felt it was missing something. The director's cut has that something, as you said "depth". It is one of my favorite superhero movies, and this is coming from someone who was introduced to Daredevil through the film. I now call myself a Daredevil fan, and I thank you for the proper introduction.
The movie did make a profit. But it's one of those films that looking back many people don't want to admit they either saw it or least of all to confess that they actually liked it.
studios imposing a dumb-down approach to movie making for the sake of more many at the expense of the art is a very good reason to extend the OWS movement to Hollywood! I mean.. fuuuuck…… bringing a first class movie down to the level of a total failure?! that shit is WRONG!
If anyone can link the Daredevil director's cut please link it to me. I liked Daredevil and I would love if it is remade. I agree that Ben was a great Matt but he was a pretty good Daredevil. There were some things like the over use of the CGI and the abilities like being able to throw someone into a wall or being able to leap 2 blocks in a single bound that irritated me but that's what movie goers wanted in 2003.
I finally got around to seeing the Director's Cut, and I agree that it's loads better than the theatrical cut. Characters are fleshed out, motivations are given, and the movie actually has a plot.
Excellent review. I just watched the Director's Cut and this is what should have been released to the theaters. Poor shame that a cool film was panned because a studio cut the film short to bring the movie time down. Because of this, what would have otherwise been a respectable film is now generally considered amongst the worst superhero movies. Plenty of viewers pan Affleck, which is unfair due to the hatchet job for the theater version. Same for the director, there was a good film here.
It's too bad that they didn't fix the soundtrack for the director's cut. Every time I am considering watching it, I remember that I will need to hear tons of awful nu-metal and evanescence. Yikes. They should have just given it a more prominent musical score instead of the non-stop soundtrack.
I havent even seen the directors cut & from this i already think its better....the plot with coolio being framed for murder which leads Matt to the Kingpin makes so much more sense
I guess I'd concurr with your 1.5 out of 4 for the theatrical version but the Director's cut at best I could ever give it is a 2, maybe a 2.5 out of 4. It's still a pretty weak movie.
Regardin the scene of Kingpin killing his guards in this, I was extremely confused. Had they done something wrong and thus encurred the Kingpin's wrath? It comes off as him killing them just for the hell of it and to show the audience how formidable he is. Weak, extremely weak scene that makes no sense. And to top it off, when he meets Bullseye for the first time(in the movie) he actually chastises Bullseye for doing the exact same thing that he did, killing a henchman for no reason.
i love this version but the 3 things i still don't like is 1) ben afleck is not as bad but still not my first choice 2) stick matts mentor is nowhere to be found 3) that stupid fight in the park.
This version did add one thing that really annoyed me: what did Matt expect to gain from breaking into the victim's house? I mean, if he was so sure that he would find something that the police missed, which would lead to the real killer, then why didn't he break in at night as Daredevil, and use whatever he found to track them down? Instead, he broke the Fourth Amendment in broad daylight, wearing civillian clothes, and with Foggy as an accomplice!
@Geekvolution I liked this movie. My only gripe with this movie is that everybody jumps around like their on steroids, It would have been better if it had just been daredevil, since hes the superhero in al of this. But, other than that, this was a solid movie.
@jdude907 It's very simple why he didn't break in as Daredevil.
Because he and his partner went together and found the information together, had Murdock decided to do this on his own as Daredevil and come up with this information, how would he explain how he did it? Would he say he went by himself, a blind man, broke into the house, and found it? He wants people to see him as blind, not as a hero. Going as Daredevil would potentially blow his cover when how he got the evidence is asked.
I really want to see this version! I enjoyed the first film, and I love the comics. Its unfortunate that they only sell the Director's Cut on Blu-Ray in Australia.
when i saw this, i was so pissed off. i wondered why the hell the producer wanted to cut it down. he is stupid. if they released this one, it would have been a franchise. i Love the directors cut. i've showed this film to a bunch of friends that hadn't seen the theatrical cut and they loved it. when i told them which scenes were cut, they couldn't believe it. but anyway, the Daredevil movies rights are going to Marvel Studios soon so a reboot is coming.
It may be my rabbitty imagination, but it seems like a number of films lately where the director's cut makes a genuinely better movie (and more understandable) than the theatrical release -- is there any hope that anyone in charge of movie releasing will notice? That the presuppositions behind theatrical cutting might not actually be sound?
@MegaSpideyman you have to, the original is, now that we've had all these superhero films, below average, but the DC makes the top 5 for me, behind Iron Man 1 & 2, Incredible Hulk & Spidey 2
