The beautiful thing about Mangum's music is that virtually anyone can pick up a guitar and recreate it. This is song is like 3 chords. And you don't need a good voice to sing it. Just emotion.

i think more the fact is that he is one of few people whose voice has an appropriate timbre for the song. others may perform it well, but its actually a song that suits the wailing of jesse lacey.

wolfgirleatsbaby, you are completely correct. Anyone who honestly thinks that this cover does the song justice is most likely very biased towards Jesse Lacey and the band Brand New. This cover does not do the song justice, and in fact it does not come close to doing the song justice. I have listened to all of Brand New's songs and like the band a lot, but people please try not to be blinded by the name "Jesse Lacey" when you listen to this failed attempt to cover a legendary song...

There are some parts of this where I feel like he was flipping BORN to cover this song, but then there are a few parts, where he tries to scream in particular, where it's rather cringe-worthy. But it's a great cover nonetheless!

This is pretty good, but nothing beats Magnum playing his own song. I also like the Pillow Army version that was posted as a video response to this, though I wish you could hear the cello and violin better.

This was probably the best cover I've ever witnessed, I felt so cool knowing this song when virtually no one around me did. I can see why Jesse's favourite album is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, it's lo-fi indie perfection with some of the best lyrics ever written
