I have a 1978 LP of Fred playing fiddle with a banjo player named Wesley Easter and Mac and Andy Snow on guitar and Marty Snow on bass. This is not on it. The LP is Snowflake 103 out of Galax.
I might be a little late to answer the question, but this version of Pretty Little Girl is from a 45 record that the Camp Creek Boys cut for MKB Records, but you can get it on the CD version of their album on County Records.
@TheBigbabyhead nope, it's Pretty Little Girl. It's more or less the same melody as John Brown's dream, though. The musicians from Round Peak, N.C. could tell you the exact difference.
Learn something every day. I figured they would have called this tune "John Brown's Dream." Da Costa Woltz's Southern Broadcasters cut this or a very similar tune by that title back in the 30s. The "Pretty little girl with the red dress on..." line shows up in a lot of old trad tunes, sorta plug-n-play utility.
Met Kyle Creed at the San Diego Folk Festival in the 70's, fell in love with the banjo and the player. His banjo is in the Smithsonian, his music is in my heart.
The only thing i could think of is that Kyle and Fred were in a band called the Camp Creek Boys. I think this actually might be on their album, which by the way is awesome.
Thanks for posting this recording; it's a classic. But isn't that Tommy Jarrell on the left in that photo, with (?) Fred Cockerham?
