Oh my ...oh my.. I cried. I am both a mother who has had children leave home... and a daughter who left home. And now a grandmother of a child who left home....
I was driving in Edmonton yesterday and just happened to turn my radio on. I heard this song and didn't know what it was so started searching youtube and finaly found.
Just wanted to add... if you love this song you will LOVE seeing him live. It's as if his voice hasn't aged at all! He's a great storyteller and all-around entertainer. It's a fun night full of laughs in addition to the amazing songs like this one.
Just saw him last month in concert. Still sounds amazing (guitar and voice both). Best part - such a nice person! Took the time to talk with each of us and sign autographs. He doesn't seem abnormally tall though :-) Maybe 6 feet?
I recently heard Tom's song..."Too Many Memories" from his "What I know" album...talk about profound.. "...what makes us grow old is replacing "hope" w/ "regret." Also a part where he says"God moved in that moment and the angels all cried..." WOW! loved it
Hey, StGermain. Identified with your comments about runnin' away in '67. I did the same thing in '67, went to Greenwich Village. Lots of danger around, but oh what great times! What discoveries of life and love! I guess there was alot of us kids at that time inspired by guys like Tom Rush and Dylan and Eric Andersen to want to leave mom and dad and explore that big beautiful world outside the limits of the little suburban towns we came from.
Hey a46.. Thx for your kind & erudite reply.A Baez album cover of the Big Sur sent me ,finally, from my little burg in Mass. Highlights of my trip: Donovan at the Hollywood Bowl; wedding present to see Baez at UCLA; playing my Martin on a cliff in the Big Sur - surf so loud could only 'feel' the chords against my chest ; Griffith Park & so many friendly folks. Add Pat Sky and Tom Paxton to your list of influences.Came home, got my 1A changed to 1AO & was off to Vietnam as a medic. Peace,tt
I don't know how hard it is yet, mama to realize that you're growing old. I know how hard it is not to be younger....I know you've tried to keep me from the cold.
Took my new Martin & backpack and left a letter to my mom & dad in the mail box....and did not come home that night. Hitched from Mass. to the Big Sur. Surely broke her heart - but I was 18 and burning to live. Wish I could have talked to them about it. That was 1967, and this song still gets me, for all the obvious reasons. Hug your kids and smell their hair and tell them you love them. Thanks for posting Tom's song.
Well, it wasn't all THAT safe to be thumbing around in the 60's!.....but I do think I had some angels watching over me,(strolling thru El Paso at 3 am w/my pack and guitar, sleeping in Union Sq in 'Frisco, waking on the beach in Mex, surrounded by a pack of wild dogs.) But of course I was 18 and thought everyone was my new friend. Being 6'3" & 200lbs helped keep me safe. Noticed how 'friendly' some fellows were in 'Frisco. Recently wrote & asked my parents to forgive me for running away in 1967
I cried when I heard this song for the first time - seeing Tom Rush perform it in Boston in 1970. Was 17, about to graduate high school and leave for college. I cried again just now when I heard it again in 2008 at age 55. A timeless song. Thank you for posting it.
@yawhause I didn't know Tom Rush before I watched Express Festival.I would have never thought I should have left my home...I'm 25 years old and whitout any doubt I'm still young, but it's hard to say hello to all your memories and get a new way, make a new step in your life.I would have never imagined that in my life I would one day be able to decide on my future...and probably I'm still crying 'cause anything would be like ten years ago...

Love this song. Very honest, like he said. Just a man and his guitar and some brilliant touching unforgettable lyrics.

its a shame. if our kids were to do what you did, theyd be killed. this country is no longer safe enough to explore youthful freedom. it saddens me.

What a handsome man!!! He aged really well, too. This song is GREAT for those of us who just dropped our sons and daughters off at college.
