I think Eddie is better suited to earlier period drama (The Other Boleyn Girl, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) - as Angel, I think he was miscast. His Angel came across as insipid. I just didn't feel the chemistry between him and Gemma's Tess. Of course, this adaptation did kind of rush the romance factor. I think Gemma had better chemistry and a stronger dynamic with Hans Matheson (Alec).

i think if the chemistry between tess and angel was any higher it would have been more sexual instead of sweet romance and intimacy. i prefer it the way it is

the 1998 version with justine waddel is so so much better. just compare this scene with the corresponding one in the former.

I do like this adaptation a lot, the only thing that's really missing is strong romantic chemistry between Tess and Angel, which the 1998 version had in spades. I do think that Gemma, Hans and the supporting cast were excellent, but Eddie seemed a bit lazy in his delivery and a bit dumbfounded at times.

Dreadful adaptation. Arterton is such a limited actress and Tess is way beyond her skills. Redmayne is unconvincing and miscast as Angel. The BBC continues its butchering of the language of novels with yet another despicable script. For those who don't read books, you may wish to try the very good Polanski film of Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

That's alright then,since YOU liked it, all criticism of it should henceforth cease (Oh, the dogmatism of first impressions and unreflective reactions!). There are superior adaptations on film to this one and it is your responsibility to seek them out and educate your taste. Naturally, the best thing to do is to read the novel,even if you'd run the risk of being called a snob, by  whoever feels threatened in her/his intellectual comforts by anything that stretches beyond the mere given.

Eddie Redmayne doesn't do it for me as Angel for some reason, he has to have some kind of charisma so that the milkmaids and Tess fall in love with him, I don't see it in this portrayal. Tess and her fellow dairymaids are excellet, though.

Oh, I don't know. I think there's enough charisma in the fact that Angel is a well-spoken and good-looking young man who is a gentleman -- he isn't like the other men the milkmaids have known and therein probably lies most of his appeal. ER does a very good job doing all this plus he's wonderful at portraying Angel's complexities. He's not a nice character. He's very flawed and sometimes downright unlikeable. ER has the depth to show this as well as the sexy Angel the milkmaids dream about.

I swear I've seen this scene a million times, and I love it EVERY time. I can't stop watching it, although I love the whole movie/book. Angel is SO sweet and Tess looks like an older version of Demi Lovato. =) But, Tess is awesome!
