man if ian ddnt merk himself, joy divison wd be so good. wt they did on the first albums was great, even the production and stuff - wonder where they wda gone with it
possibly the most expressive singer of all time, im sure tony wilson is resting well knowing that joy divisions magnificensts is echoing throughout the ages and every tormented soul is finding this band
my fav 10 songs by jd are: ceremony...dead souls...sound of music...exercise one...decades...isolation...shadow play...new dawn fades...day of the lords...no love lost .....they are not in any order but ceremony is one of the best songs in music history and definitely my fav jd song easily -i even love the new order version of ceremony too....anyway just my opinions -ive been a huge fan since seeing them live on tv in 1979-78...love the live vid called here are the young men -too -
JD sound so freaking amazing no matter what, who, where or why...this band is one in lifetime combination of four genius musicians!!! Absolutely rare quality!!!
This is what happens when Martin Hannett is not around. Just listen to An Ideal For Living and you can hear how much better they were without fucking Martin Hannett. Very much overrated asshole!!!
@DerrEinzige that's the point. in most cases, the studio versions are better. in JD's case, the studio versions are great yet the live versions are better. it's a rarity in music but a unique listening experience
I wouldn't say they are "better" per say. I would say they are both equally great in their own ways. Martin Hannett was a genius and I wouldn't want to discredit him by saying one is better then the other. Never the less I think they are both great in their own ways.
Agree with you but the BBC sessions did show Joy division as the highly competent artists that they were. it was a live session but ( it all) sounds so perfect. This version is my favourite JD track . It sounds almost sinister and haunting. Fantastic two and half minutes of pure genius.
Joy Division are sheer brilliance personified, taking Life's worst sounding experiences and projections and packaging them in the most palatable fashion. Fairly breathing life into the deathless.
listen the cover this song, play for NATIONAL RAZOR - exercise one

They were not a studio band, I can vouchsafe for that. Very tight live, at a time when that was deemed almost wrong.

Different mixes.
Martin Hannet wanted a gloomier sound.
JD had the sound on the Peel Sessions keep close to how they played live (harsher, punkier, etc)
