  • i hate the preroll

  • Can't wait for Christmas to come!!

  • i thought we werent going to hear any voices there...

  • Sheesh. The first video I could find that sounded traditional! People think they can re-write classics!

  • Saved to my playlist: "Christmas Classix!" - may the Holy Child be born in us today!

  • This is a wonderful song that shows the meaning of love.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • This is not another version: we just don't recognize the song because usually we hear the 4 voice at same time. Instead, in this one, only the 'soprano' line is being used. The 'tenor' is the one we are used to but is not played here.

  • Beautiful Voices, BUT, I REALLY do NOT like this version of my favourite carol. It sounds so strange compared to the "propper" version. But I'm sure others prefer this to the "real" version. Each to their own!

  • we saw them perform this nice memories

  • Why is the song so short? I want to hear some more!

  • i like this Christmas song and What Child Is This. those are my two favorite! :)

  • I'm a 30 year old Brit, and this is the first time I have heard this version! I looked it up, and it is the original version, as written by Brooks/Redner. My favourite Christmas hymn by a mile, the lyrics are beautiful. I love 'this' version, though it still spins me out as I don't know the tune!! I do like it, now I'm not sure which I prefer! It seems Vaughan Williams 'pinched' the lyrics and added a traditional British tune (see my 'video' response) Merry Christmas everyone!

  • Good to see someone acknowledge that this is the original. A lot of UK folks don't realize the version they are familiar with is the altered/unoriginal music accompaniement. This is the original heard here as it was written in Philadelphia in the 1800's.

  • One of my favourite christmas-hymns! (:

  • Both of these verses are in our Hymn books as verse 1 and verse 2

  • There's a version other than this one??

  • Yep :-) This version is more widely known in the US than the other version, which is more widely known in the UK! Search 'O Little Town of Bethlehem Libera' and the other version, sung by Aled Jones and Libera, will come up!

  • thanks!

wow though, I really had no idea that there was another version, that's kinda cool, they're so different :)

    thanks again!

  • Anytime :-) I was really surprised too, that there are two different versions. Until last Christmas, this version was the only one I'd ever heard!

  • This song shows the love and joy of Christmas in every way. Love it!

  • @FrankTheShyGuy I agree

  • Wow, had never known there were two different versions of this.....Only were wondering why the other track sung by young Aled sounded so strange! lol

This performance is heavenly, just like angels singing!

  • beautiful video !

  • I like both versions of O Little Town of Bethlehem...but Away in a manger it has to be the traditional one all the way (the one sung by Kings College Cambridge Boys Choir)

  • Agreed. The "traditional" version of this song is the original version as heard here.

  • Two versions certainly exist. This one is what one hears most often in the US and in Catholic services. The other, composed by Vaughn Williams, is heard most often in the UK and in Anglican/Episcopalian services.

    Same lyrics, different tunes.

No go search out the different versions of 'Away in a Manger'!

  • True. The original version of the music (used to accompany the lyrics written by a Protestant US pastor in Philadelphia in the 1800's) is what is heard here. The British generally are only familiar with the altered non-original version.

  • The other version , compared to this great melody, doesn't do a thing for me.

  • This is the only "O Little Town of Bethlehem"

Christmas carol I've known all my life. I did listen to the walsinghamf you mentioned about and I never heard that version till now.

  • This isn't O Little Town of Bethlehem! Well, I've certainly never heard this version anyway. I've only ever heard it sung to the tune of Forest Green.

  • This is the only version I've ever heard, Georgia. I believe Nat King Cole sings this, too, but I can't find it anywhere on youtube.

  • Oh right, well I like both versions anyway - this is just one I've never heard before in England. If you type in O Little Town of Bethlehem into YouTube, you'll get a video by a user called "walsinghamf" which is the version we sing.

I think the one you have would suit Nat King Cole's singing style better anyway.

  • This is the original music for this great American carol. A British composer added altered music later, and that is the one familiar to many in the UK although it is not the original.

  • This is the only version ive ever heard too!

  • And I.
