  • We had no trolleybuses back then or any earlier, and we still don't, howcome? Electric traction is far more suited to urban transit applications than diesel, and always has been.

  • wonderful video,I remember them well, those old AEC,s kept going, going & going.

  • @DaveSpencer32 thanks for uploading. very nostalgic. any chance you could do a video featuring buses in melbourne in the 80's or 90's, please? Thanks again.

  • yes, but what about the very last shot? Is that the same location?

  • LAST FEW SHOTS ARE ON THE CORNER OF GLENHUNTLY RD, BARKLY STREET,ORMOND ESPLANADE WHERE THEY ALL MEET..YOU CAN SEE THE RESERVE....ROBINSON RESERVE ELWOOD

  • Garden City. BP oil tank 300m west of Station Pier. Queensbridge st heading into city just passed casino. Then south on Russell st down from Victoria St. Then south along Lygon st left at Elgin st (Percy’s old pub was on the corner 1:10). Then back up Russell st to La Trobe st. East on Glenhuntly rd into Horne st Elsternwick (Daily Planet), outside station – south on Horne st turning right into Rusden to Npn Hwy. North up Barkly st…stumped on the last shot

  • My late father, my uncle and great uncle drove for the mmtb ranging from the late 60's through the 90's, they were pre select auto's in the mk3 just select a gear on the column and hit the clutch, for the next gear do the same but it won't change till you use the clutch as required but the real hurdle was no power steering!

  • Well, once you learn, and master how to use manual gears, it's the same as automatic... Well, unless you going to drive all day, you'd be poor bugger no matter what gear you using manual or automatic... manual ftw

  • imagine driving a bus back then? they were all manual's, every stop you would be changing gears over 2,000 times a day, poor buggers

  • @the124Lscania There aren't manual buses anymore?

  • @Youcanonacanon NO THEY ARE ALL AUTOS now

  • i think older days was much freedom and no pains compare to this century always issues within society

  • Garden city Port Melb? and further in the film is the end of Glenhuntly and Beach rd??

  • The shortened AEC Regal Mark 3s were known as "Bobtails". They were shortened to meet union requirements for one man operation. The "two manners" (the 41 seaters) were operated by a driver and a conductor. The last AEC Regal Mark 3 (a Bobtail) operated at Footscray Depot in 1980. The MMTB was abolished in 1983.

  • The old Tramway Buses, that brings back memories.

  • the lack of traffic is amazing!

  • Can anyone identify the location near the start with the BP oil tanks in the background? I reckon it's the Garden City bus route down near Princes Pier.

  • @fernald10 That's right. They're gone now -knocked down in the 80s

  • For a short while I owned No. 516, a '53 Regal III. Still ran well, but needed more attention than I could give her. She might be in this vid, maybe?

  • Terrific footage...this could be the precursor to 'Speed'?..lol. Also loved the Mazda Bongo van at 1:19, can't remember when I last saw one of those! Good work.

  • I don't see any bombs... (I presume you mean 'Speed' the 1994 film starring Keanu Reeves)

  • 1:24 is cnr Glenhuntly Rd and Horne St, Elsternwick?

  • The AECs looked elderly even then! As for the bus at 2:58, that looks an incredibly short rear overhang...

  • AEC Mk3's & 4's....love it!!!! do you have any more melbourne stuff? that was great!

  • the 1:05 mark was in russell st the city, i recognise the old police headquaters. my guess is the end of the clip was around elwood but not sure.

  • loved the clip, thanks for sharing

  • Early Melbourne buses, fantastic
