  • you guys are so lucky to have a great master.

  • Unfortunately, this ego thing is so difficult to control. Good of you Rinpoche to give this talk which is very informative.

  • The whole purpose of the debate is to create further understanding rather than putting people down.

  • Debate is such an excellent method of Buddhism to sharpen our understand of the philosophy and teachings so we can develop real realisations and many monks have actually gained it right in the middle of a debate.

  • Debate is a highly developed method to develop a thorough understanding of the teachings. It involves practice that involves dissecting their knowledge and wisdom through the formal process of debate. The beauty of it is, ego and its attendant laziness of feeling unworthy will be wiped away through the process.

  • good talk

  • Debate is an old tradition that has been brought over from ancient Buddhist India. The tradition has an excellent means to sharpen our grasp of the teachings so we have indisputable comprehension so our faith in the teachings becomes unshakeable!

  • Debate is an amazing way to learn and to clear our doubts. This tradition is amazing and should be treasured. Not many Buddhist tradition except the Sakyas stress this so much. Let's keep the Gaden tradition alive!

  • Actually, whatever it was, people with ego or with less ego, it is still highly engaging for many and it makes learning the Dharma exciting. During debate in KH, you can see more than 90 percent of people are pay full attention which is unusual unless its Rinpoche talking of course.

  • Actually people who have not put in effort to train themselves to address the public will be very scared to approach a debate : )

  • What His Eminence said is so precise if we do things differently behind and in public , or we have concerns about public speaking . This probably means we are not very consistent in our actions.

  • They actually have debate exhibitions in the monasteries thats amazing , and they switch around where they have the debate exhibition between Sera, Drepung and Ganden very nice.

  • Debate was originally developed in India due to direct competition with Brahmanism. The Buddhist Pandits had to sharpen their wits to defend Buddhism and because their debate skills was born from their realization, they were able to win many great followers and sometimes converts from Brahmanism. The ceremonial hat they wore is the red Pandit hat that is symbolic of logic fired by wisdom and compassion to enlightened others for the sake of one's spiritual awakening.

  • Red was the color of control , which was used to control and subdue the non believers. The color red was then changed to yellow , to symbolize during lama Tsongkhapas time, all negative influences had been subdued and it was time for dharma to flourish in Tibet.

  • Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is the best.

  • I hope to see one debate from the three monasteries.

  • thanks for posting this. wow! this is an excellent dharma talk on the topic of Buddhist debate. is the debate open to public? where can one watch a debate like this? is it done in English language? would love to get more info on this. thanks!

  • is this tradition of debate between different monasteries still continue until today?

  • awgog: Yes! Check out the Journey to Gaden YouTube video, There is footage showing them debating. In fact, Kechara House sponsored the flooring for the debate hall. How meritorious!

  • Is there any class(teaching) on how to debate in Kechara House? I want to learn how to debate. Thank you.

  • ntadk , there is no classes to teach debate , though within the Lam Rim classes we have there is a lot of dharma discussion which can get quite heated at times. : )

  • Wow! Its amazing how the Tibetans have kept the debate tradition alive as a means to sharpen our minds so we develop unmistaken understanding of Buddhas teachings. What a sublime way to gain realization.

  • Thank you. I wish i can join the debate tournament in the future. There are so many benefits in attending debate.

  • any good books to recommend to read on the topic "Debate" ?

  • it is good to learn that Gaden, Sera and Drepung monasteries takes turn to host the debate 'exhibitions' where 15,000 monks will be taking part in this great event.

  • Debate in the monastery is HUGE where sometimes during the session, the whole monastery will be watching which is a big pressure on the debaters haha. This is also I believe to get ones ego down.

  • Helps to diminish our ego, forces us in a positive way to learn and understand Dharma and it is a fun way as you interact with the opponent you will learn more.

  • Comment removed

  • argue for the Dharma and come to think about it, yeah we do learn things through an arguement don't we? it makes us think. same thing here in debating. it challenges our mind.

  • Debate is excellent for suppressing our ego and helping us to open up our knowledge in Dharma. it is also good training on the speech part, learn how to debate.

  • Wow....what a teachingI I learned tremendous lesson from this video. Especially when guru told to attend debate meant listen what other ppl to hv learned, what other ppl to hv doubt and what other ppl to have understood. Hence in debate tournament is not abt win or lose but its about argue to learn and help other ppl to learn. Very good!

  • Such an inspiring talk! Thank you

  • This video inspire me to study hard !

I can't wait to take part in next year .

  • I <3 H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche!
