an incredible movie. craig tried to go back into john's body to win back maxine. only to live out the rest of his days seeing the woman he loves with someone else through the eyes of the child and there's nothing he can do about it. karma, ain't it a bitch!!!
I didn't mind what had happened to Craig not nearly as much as what happened to John Malkovich. The REAL John.
At 1:40. After years of being controlled by Craig, he is free for a few seconds before having multiple consciousnesses shoved into his mind, overwriting (I imagine) his being. He will never control his body anymore, if he even still exists.
I found that haunting. What happened to Craig... unfortunate. He should have left well enough alone.
@nyc11104 yes. there are so many love stories out there, but it is rare to find a story of unrequited love that is so well told. it's haunting, beautiful, and incredibly sad, just like life.
@wildforest2010 I know what you mean: Toy Story 2, The Blair Witch Project, Election, The Dinner Game, The Straight Story, American Beauty, Magnolia, The Matrix, American Pie, Fight Club, and many others.
@Foolanna It's a song by Bjork called "Amphibian", you can probably find it right here, on youtube....ube...ube...ube. Oh look away, look away, look a w a y ...
@Foolanna You're right, I thought the clip extended into the credits, but it doesn't. I have failed you... GestapoTheCat answered your question corectly: The song's called "Future Vessel" by Carter Burwell.
One of my favorite movies! I don't know if it could have worked with many other actors, but Malkovich is perfect for this and is amazing. Yes, it's a very sad ending, but Craig was not a character to be celebrated. He was a very ugly person in every sense, and a new kind of villain not normally seen in movies. Incredible film.
He says near the end that he'll go back into johns body but the old guy explains that once they're in, the one who tries to go in his body will be trapped in the sub conscience of his child. Where he can no longer control them and is forced to see what the see forever
@orravancam It wasn't shown, but implied. After Craig leaves Malkovich, he says, "Maxine, I left Malkovich for you! It proves I love you!" And then, when Maxine and Lotte leave in the taxi, he yells, "I'll go back into the portal and kick Lester out and then you'll love me again, Maxine!"
And I thought a balding Charlie Sheen was really funny
Any else agree that Hollywood isnt making the kind of good films it was the late 90s anymore - Fight Club, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich, American Beauty etc?
@geminigiirly If you think about it, when those movies came out, it was a changing time in our history. We were coming towards the end of a millenium, and we were all asking some really hard questions. What kind of meaning do our lives hold? Is there any purpose to our lives? How do we define ourselves? These filmmakers were able to address those questions. Nowadays, Hollywood just commercializes off of the indie moviestyle. It's all about instant gratification, never proposing any questions.
Craig enters John's body but it's too late so he enters the next vessel: Emily. But as she isn't mature yet he stays in the subconscious without being able to control her. So it's karma. As a punishment for threatening Lotte, he has to watch the woman he loves with other woman. And by live forever he means going from vessel to vessel until the end of times.
what about lester and his friends? are there lots of people's consciousness in lester, just following him around as he recruits more people? who takes control of the body? do all the recruits sit back and watch as lester (mertin) runs his life? not really worth the longer "life", imo. and don't they enter only the subconscious if someone is already inside? and like maxine and lotte, get spit out?
i had fun watching it, but the ending for me was confusing..
I know this film was a tad unsettling from the get go, but isn't this end abit too depressing for a comedy drama? It's like wacthing a horror film only it to end with the pyscopath killer shouting "April fool!" and everyone he surposeingly killed jump out from their hiding places unharmed

@Szeicho its the people inside his head, but only the old guy is controlling him (the carrot juice guy), I forget his name.

I Love This Movie, but i dont understand something about the ending:
Why Charlie Sheen looks like John Malkovich in the end of the movie?
And why he calls John Malcovich ''Malkatraz"?
can someone explain this to me??
demoncomedian 1 year ago
I don't think they deliberately tried to make Charlie look like John, they just made him bald to show that he had aged.
Malkatraz is just a nickname. Ma-Sheen and Malc-atraz.
That's just me anyway.
