have basically the same setup as you but in a 350 and a different cam anad distributor, first i changed my distributor from a stock one to a msd pro billet changed the weights for a advance that was 18 degrees, 18 at idle 36 and 3000 rpms real easy to do with the pro billet, then it ran way better but still lacked power looked at my carb did a paper clip trick on the secondaries seen they werent opening then put the lightest spring in my secondaries and now they open and it runs like a raped ape
Timing, air fuel mixture. It really sounds like the timing. They way it boggs down when you gave it gas. I would check the timing. and all the plugs. If not that check air fuel mixture on the carb screws
Thanks for your suggestion, i don't know if its running lean. The engine came carb to pan, even with fuel pump and lines, everything matched and set up. It picks ub above 3k. People have been telling me that i am choking the engine with my 2.73 gears and 2400 converter. Cam is a HR-296-2S-12 IS. I already have 3.73 here waiting to be isnatlled, but i still don't think this behaviour is normal. It backfires sometimes too. It will do the same thing when i take a hard turn. Float seems ok.
lean? what jets you running. My demon was about 5 or 6 #s(jets) too lean out the box. Dose it ever pick up? maby the squirters are too small/big? Misfire from the plugs to the headers?valve lash set properly?

Distributor advance, poorly tuned carb (air/fuel ratio), timing.

Timing? Vac advance or mec? try disconnecting the vac adv if there is one.(and plug it at the carb obviously)
