Wow, you amaze me. I am a beginning painter at age 48. I know it's late and I will most likely never be that good, but I love painting and it seems to take my stress away! My question for you is....why do all my oil portraits look cartoonish? Seems no matter how hard I try they never look realistic. Thank you, and please keep showing us your work!
Could you tell me what colours I would need to paint a portrait, ps i am actullay slightly colout blind, but it doesn't stop me from drawing and attempting to paint!.
you really are a fantastic artist. Im at uni at the moment doin a fine art course and im actually looking at portraits myself. I'm just wondering how you were taught or if you just kind of picked it up? i work in a different style to you but i really think your work is beautiful and i think i'm gonna have a go at your technique. really lovely, keep up the good work! x
This is probably a question you've already been asked a BILLION times, but did you use acrylic paints? If so, then there is hope for me XD I've started painting, recently, and portraits are my specialty when it comes to drawing, but painting has proven to be a whole other demon. haha Acrylics dry so fast! D:
@Asleepymystikal there is nothing wrong with that...art is so subjective now that even the best portrait artist use gridding techniques...as long as you aint tracing then you are creating art pal.
holy sh*t you're using gel medium?? I thought that was oil! I usually do semigloss layers over acrylic + retarder. You restored my confidence in direct painting.
blocking in is a great way to learn portraits and any subject matter really. It gets you to "learn" what you're painting or drawing. Like meeting someone for the first time. The big welcoming 'Hello, how are you?' (First impressions) and on to the getting to know them (the details)
please make dvd out and sell showing different angles of face like looking up,sideways, down and skin variations, black, chocolate, white pale etc,i'd be the first to buy,
im trying to learn from your video, because im not really into painting like you do. but now for christmas id like to have a special present for someone, you know ;)
can anybody help me, i got bob ross oil to paint. does oil take a day or so to dry??? anybody? also what is brand of paint is best for face portraits? and acrylic or oils?
Great video, I love how you build up the layers of of paint to get the right color, if you have time can you please look at my video of my paintings and studio and tell me what you think, Thanks!!!
I love your brushstroke technique but what about the background? I always find it difficult to add a background when the hair is a dark color, it tends to blend in.
Hopefully these videos give some inspiration to people starting out that not everything is perfect or planned out in painting. I meant to elaborate more but it's been a year of no updates, so I'm only just getting started on what I want to express here.
wow, really nice!

can anybody help me, i got bob ross oil to paint. does oil take a day or so to dry??? anybody? also what is brand of paint is best for face portraits? and acrylic or oils?
ilov3lucy86 2 years ago
oil can take weeks to dry. It all depends on how thickly you paint it on and possibly how much thinner you use. There are many factors...
dogchristopher 2 years ago
Oil can take a long time to dry, though there are types that you can 'bake dry' (the quality may be lowered)
I prefer acrylics, others may prefer watercolor etc. Just get your feet wet in lots of media
