The song is cool but not attached to this video. IMHO all the videos of this with songs added just detract from it.

It is really tough to watch him struggle to his feet, obviously disoriented and probably on the verge of going into shock. And as one poster stated watching him smoulder must have been horrifying.  I've worked the pits of hundreds of local races as a mechanic and fortunately never seen any of my drivers or any I know badly burned, I don't know how I'd handle that up close.

Yes, but when someone is in a exploded/burning car, procedure generally goes out the window (or should), and no one will care what you do if you do what's best, whether it's procedure or not.

But, I don't know if it's culture/general intelligence or what, but most asians seem to be able to only conform to procedure, and unable to think outside of it, to do what's best in the situation.

I'm pretty sure they leave helmets on, if youve ever driven on a racecourse, the helmets you wear hurt your neck when you pull them off normally, let alone after crashing a car head on at 250kph. If youve already got a broken neck and someone pulls your helmet off, your probably not walking again.

Not if leaving the helmet on poses a greater risk. If a driver is unconcious, for example, you should remove the helmet to prevent asphyxation. It's not that hard to learn how to do that right. Leaving on a smoldering helmet doesn't seem the brightest of ideas, either. And the first safety rule clearly is not to leave people in shock alone. If you care about spine injuries, you really don't want to have the driver running around. The safety crew acted absolutely moronic.

All in all a terrible crash, even more terrible organisation. You could possibly expect these kinda things to happen in the 50's and 60's but this was 1998. Very sad.
