We once had a small dog who miscarried her puppies because the father was much larger than she was and the babies were too much for her. Shortly thereafter, we adopted a kitten which had been removed from its mother too early, and the dog immediately decided it was her baby. One of our cats once rescued the puppy belonging to another of our dogs when a Doberman snatched it from our yard and tried to run off. My father said he once had a farm cat that brought a baby rabbit home and raised it.

This is exactly true, BTW. My herd dog took such good loving care of lambs that they often pulled out tufts of her hair. She didn't like it much, but hey, it was her vocation in life.When my cat had kittens and didn't quite know what to do with them, my dog became a mother of kittens.
