The myth of Joy Division should be put to bed. New Order retained JD's diy punk ethos with a far more encompassing musicality. I've no doubt that even Ian would agree to this. It's obviously subjective, but to suggest New Order doesn't measure up to JD's legacy is a little tenuous.
Joy Division were The Cure's reigning influence. Robert Smith's guitar tone is firmly cemented in Peter Hook's chorus driven bass sound-above all else. One can only play so many notes and chords, and the two bands did work within the same post-punk/new-wave genres. It's inevitable that certain songs sound similar, but make no mistake-The Cure would be unrecognizable without these guys.
@sadeyedlady9@MrAlphabet1 Really? I love The Cure but I find it hilarious to see some zealots so obsessed that could find The Cure even in a cow's fart.
@sadeyedlady9 Haha yeah and Robert Smith have said already several times they are fans of New Order But you can go on touching yourself thinking R.Smith whispers in your ear retard.
Their best album, with great songwriting, excellent recording and artistic direction, and an amazingly un-electronic sound loaded with energy. Unfortunately, they went artistically downhill from this point (no offense really, it's my personal opinion). I think the songs were written taking into account the limitations in Sumner's voice, so they're rendered really nicely, even in live performances, without the need to alter the voice with effects and filters.
NEW ORDER CANNOT COMPARE TO JOY DIVISION BUT IS GOOD ENOUGH TO B IN STANDARDS WITH JD NEW ORDER IS Mind altering Bodybending Music i hear SUNRISE i wanna cry dance runaway my mind runsaway with the lyrics and music THANK U LORD FOR JD AND NEW ORDER RIP IAN Love tore me apart not im left alone lonely so many years being with no gf i grew familiar with the feeling of being alone IM AFRAID IM GONNA DIE ALONE
see NO perform the opening riff of this on a Fac Records doc on BBC4 a few years back and thought it was a remixed version of JD's 24 hours (the openings do sound similar)
Got hold a copy of Low Life and was educated
Awesome song, but would have sound awesome with the presence of Ian Curtis performaning lead voacls (Barney does a great job though)
It fills me with joy how the remaining members of joy division were able to detach themselves from the past after their 1st album Movement and go on to create their very own art, their own soundscapes, their own vision. And they kicked ass. They made wonderful stuff.
I agree with AdamCoffin13 this album is timeless this IS New Order at their best great accoustic rips and great drumms what a band thank you New Order for your effort to make great music...........peace...
...just went out and purchased the Low Life CD at Fingerprints in Long Beach tonight (I had the cassette when it first came out) and this is my favorite track. It's also one of the few tracks on Low Life to showcase guitar along with Peter Hook's amazing bass as lead instruments. I absolutely love this album and consider it one of the best from the amazing year of 1985 which also saw the debut major label release from Sisters of Mercy, and The Cult's epic Love album. What a year in music!

New order was probably the best group to come fromn another excellent group. new order can rock or make u dance.Put this on in the car at night on a motorway and drive. awesome track
I believe I read years ago that when his voice is recorded they change it so what you are hearing isn't what you would hear if he was singing to you in person. Not sure if this is true or not. I think his voice is good. Maybe since he is pleasing on the eyes, his voice sounds better?

This way would probably sound Joy Division if they had survived the eighties.

This is one of the greatest songs ever made. I have no idea why it wasn't released as an anthem? The guitar in the end is euphoric.

Another New Order special..... fantastic long dramatic ending... great mix of synth and guitar.

This whole albums is a great combination of synths and traditional guitar sounds ... this to me is the combination of Joy Division and New order.

@kams1001 You couldn't have said it better....and Peter hook in my opinion, is the back bone, o0f New Order....basicly drum and bass, RULES

@roland06711 Yeah Hookys bass is legendary, very disctinctive, makes the New Order sound.

Not being able to sing in a traditional fashion goes quite well with the post-punk motif, don't you think?
I like Ian's voice, be he too could not readily sing.

True, but his voice suited Joy Divisions sound perfectly I'd say.
