  • haha it was kinda funny

  • I am sorely disappointed in these two. "Banana republic..." McCain, you have revealed yourself as being so dull and tired. If you want to distance yourself so much from the issues that the current administration is trying to detangle, why don't you just lay down and take a nap for the rest of the term?

  • enforcing laws and constitutions is for banana republics ?

lol.....How did he manage to say that and keep a straight face ?

  • "Show trials"? What a pos.

  • Oh boy, now McCain is on the "banana republic" train. This isn't about a witch hunt. That is politicizing. This is about ACCOUNTABILITY AND JUSTICE! People are working in earnest to clean up a mess should not be so belittled. Nevertheless, it is up to the Justice Department.

  • Isn't torturing innocent people, in fact just torturing, the preserve of a Bannana Republic? Looks like the GOP headed the Bannana Republic for 8 years.

  • At least we agree the Federal Reserve is made up of trolls.

Just because the courts have not touched the subject does not validate the proof due to the lack of a ruling. In that case, one must turn to the Law definitions that the founders would have used to create the laws. Maybe it is clear to the courts what a "natural born citizen" is but just not to you.

  • Looks like the Republicans have got all their talking points in a row. Banana republic banana republic banana republic.

    Hey Republicans!

Remember in the movie Easy Rider, when the hicks shot Dennis Hopper off his American-made Harley for having LONG HAIR, and being a HIPPY?

NOW ALL THE HICKS HAVE LONG HAIR AND HARLEYS. My point?

Republicans will eventually get on board with reality -- 30 years after its out of style. And they will do it in the faggiest way possible (see Keith Urban.)

  • *snicker*

At the time of Easy Rider most of the South was Democratic Party controlled so those were Democrats.

*roflmao* Thanks I needed a good giggle.

  • Oh, those were democrats.

Who was it that ended segregation and Jim Crow? John Lewis? Martin Luther King? Kennedy? LBJ?

Whenever I see Keith Urban I laugh. I think, if he was on the chopper, they would have shot his ass. How things change with time!!

  • Do not judge me on the sins of my grandfather. In the case of Mr. King, I think he was a Republican. Those nasty folks fighting for equality and freedom of the black man/woman.

Funny how 40 years changes things would you agree with that point?

  • King was no Republican. He was an anti-Vietnam war, Black liberation, left-wing, liberal, progressive, socialist -- straight up.

I'm not judging you. Unless you are still voting like a white supremacist fundamentalist Bible thumper. Then I am judging you.

  • The problem with the reference to the US -v- Wong Kim Ark; Mr. Ark's parents has residence and business in the State of CA; whereas, Mr. Ark lived in the State of CA with his birth parents the whole time in one residence.

Soetoro by Indonesian laws could not be a US/British/Indonesian citizen because that would have kept him from school. He could only be Indonesian.

A "Natural Born" is of the Father's heritage in it's definition. *wink*

  • No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. (via that picky thing called the US Constitution)

  • You just don't read do you?

Let me make is real short:

Father - Kenyan = Son Kenyan Citizen aka British Citizen; Thus not a "Natural Born Citizen".

Natural Born Citizen - requirement to be united States of America President -> Constitution.

    Is that plain enough?

  • While the birth certificate crisis continues to build, please remember this: Obama aka Soetoro simply producing a long form vault birth certificate will not "put this to rest once and for all". There is chatter that a new, high tech forged long form vault certificate is being prepared. Regardless of whether Obama aka Soetoro was born in Kenya, Hawaii or Nebraska, it was his father's status as a British subject that makes him ineligible period:

  • When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdoms dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.s children."

  • Obama aka Soetoro can never be a 'natural born citizen at birth' because his father was a Kenyan national under British rule. At his birth, Obama aka Soetoro was a dual citizen. That ends any possibility of him being constitutionally ineligible. This is the core issue. Obama aka Soetoro never "reclaimed" his citizenship as claimed by his supporters because he was not a 'natural born citizen at birth." Can anyone read English anymore?

  • Additionally, when his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, married Indonesian national, Lolo Soetoro, Obama became an Indonesian citizen. They do not allow dual citizenship. That is why Obama's legal name on his school records in Indonesia is Barry Soetoro. There is no evidence he ever legally changed his name to Obama or reentered the U.S. legally.

  • I don't believe that water boarding was torture. If I have to dunk an Al Quieda leader into water for any amount of time, as long as it does not result in death, in order to save hundreds of American lives, then I'm goin to do it. If the interrogation techniques were more severe, such as wipping, maiming, hanging until near death, or cutting off limbs, then I'd agree that it is torture. But as it is, it's only water.

    Get over it.

  • your right.. good thing every one who has ever been tortured was guilty. thank god innocent people have not been tortured. good thing that if you ever get capture we have set godo precedents so maybe you wont get tortured.... hahah i like how you have hanging till near death as torture but drowning to near death is a OK... eat one buddy.

  • Ugh...it's so sad to see this type of attitude being so prevalent in our society now. America was the leader in writing the Geneva Conventions because of the horrific treatment of POWs in WW2. Even our enemies deserved to be treated humanely, it set us apart from the uncivilized world. But you people have forgotten that, I lost 3000 of my countrymen as well on 9/11, but I didn't lose my soul. The argument is a farce, some of these guys know nothing. And other prisoners have died in custody.

  • big difference, witches aren't real, these crimes could be very real, a witch hunt is when you use scare tactics to hunt for something that simply doesn't exist... our justice system should go forward, if real crimes have been proven to have been committed

  • Bannana republic? whats that in reference to? the damned clothing store?

  • It's in reference to American client states in Latin America. They are 'republics', they export bananas, but they also have many totalitarian characteristics. I don't get the reference to banana republics in this instance though... Banana republics often torture their own citizens, and then they get away with it. In America, we are asking for justice, but both Dems and Repubs are denying it. That, to me, is what would make us more of a banana republic.

  • We must not except excuses from anyone on this matter. This is not about left and right, this about right and wrong. The law is the law. The law does not care about parties. Evil can not be used to fight evil. "The only grey area here is how human are those that condone torture." The Attorney General must follow his job description, investigate and prosecute where crimes are found. The congress must do the same. We must affirm to ouselves and show the rest of the world we are a nation of laws!!

  • This BS comes from the party (GOP) that cried and screamed during the Clinton years about the integrity of the office of the President, over Clintons personal life. Now that their parties President has committed War Crimes breaking US and International law, they take it as an oppurtunity to bash Obama and call him a third world leader, saying we should just move on and not do anything about it. What a bunch of hypocritical cowards. Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200., Go Directly To Jail !!!!!

  • A lack of prosecutions for torture is what would actually give the US banana republic status. And how is seeking justice a "witch hunt"? I suppose McCain would oppose prosecution of the North Vietnamese who tortured him.

  • This is exactly what literally hurts me about McCain. Watching someone say and do things for political gain that is probably destroying his own soul.

  • ITS OFFICIAL!!! I now despise Barack Obama more than George W. Bush. He refuses to appoint a special prosecutor to punish Bush for his illegal WIRE TAPPING and TORTURING ways. Its becoming real clear that our government tortured detainees not for information but for forced confessions. This is the perfect way to purge out our most corrupt officials both Dem and Rep.There is no way Obama will ever get anything done with the gangster leadership we have now. Lets see if "BO" wants real change

  • It's really weird to read these types of posts by users that claim sudden disenfranchisement when they have a long history that says otherwise.

  • The North Vietnamese army should have tortured and executed all the nazi imperialist ameriKKKan COWARD war criminal prisioners instead of letting them returned back to the states, now these same nazi U.S bastards COWARD dogs and their rat filthy offsprings committed more war crimes again.

  • goodness, that is a lot of hate

  • I don't think it a witch hunt its a trophy hunt and I can't wait to see Cheney and Bush's head over the fireplace of justice.

  • banana republic n : a small country (especially in Central America) that is politically unstable and whose economy is dominated by foreign companies and depends on one export (such as bananas)

  • Well, our country does depend on one export: debt. We couldn't survive as a country if the rest of the world, mostly China, wasn't willing to finance our debt.

  • God forbid if presidents are held accountable for their actions. What a terrible precedent.

    Fuck is that dumb.

  • An actual "Certificate of Live Birth" not a "Certification of Birth".

The pixels on the website by Mr. Airs would not be the proof needed to clear Soetoro's claim to "Natural Born Citizen"; And the actual fact that the duel citizenship of having a Keynan father in '61 should have been "proof" enough of his non-Natural Born Citizenship.

  • this is the most absurd talking point ever...seriously.

enforcing the rule of law is the sign of a banana republic? puh-lease...

  • If you have to prosecute past administrations for crimes against humanity (torture), you really live in a "banana republic" or you are in a process of denazification.

So they are right about "banana republic", but they are so stupid to notice, that they are shooting themselves in the foot with mentioning that term.

  • Gotta love it when same party representatives go on tv and spout talking points. At least try to find another phrase for "banana republic" so your guys don't look like they're reading crib sheets

  • Maybe we shouldn't have held trials at nuremberg, it divided the country. And putting sadam on trial, only playing partisan politics of with the Iraqis. And how about those trials down in Chile. What a force! That banana republic was very silly because they couldn't look forward and be "productive"

Not saying that bush is as bad as these guys, but since when is "we have a lot of other stuff to do" a good reason not to enforce the law. And since when are us congress hearings show-trials

  • The mind boggles!

  • Why can't McCain just die already?

  • He's basically saying that if a president completely fucks up the country (even if he permits people in his administration to commit crimes against humanity), that we shouldn't prosecute those people just because that Pres. isnt in office anymore?? What a crock of shit. Bush gave himself immunity, but the people who helped him do it should be held accountable. That way, the President's staff will think twice before helping him commit crimes. 9/11 did not give us special rights.

  • McCain says "In Banana Republics they prosecute actions they didn't agree with under previous administrations."

Ok, well TYRANTS also DO UNPRECEDENTED things in their administrations.

There are a lot of things democrats didn't AGREE with during the Bush administration. They only want to prosecute those things which are UNPRECEDENTED, and UN-AMERICAN.

  • I wonder where these guys stood and thought when the hunt was on about whether Clinton had sex with Monica Lewinsky or not. Oh wait - that was way more important to find out.

  • OMG, now we do something illegal, we should not be taken responsible for it and be prosectued...

Nice, i'm going to rob a bank just before the next reelection. Hey the past is the past...

  • Torture is a tactic that is more appropriate for a banana republic. And who brought us torture? Bush and the Repugs who now do not want to own up to their failings and law-breaking ways.

  • The US IS a banana republic. What other definition can be applied to a country ruled by a capricious corporate oligarchy whose power base is money?

  • all idiots

  • History & Science prove the only legitimate information does not come from torture; In fact, an al Qaeda member confessed to al-Qaeda's Deputy Operations Chief Ayman al-Zawahiri location specifically because his captors were decent & fair

Moreover, heads of DOD make case people joined against America simply because of their indecent atrocities at Gitmo; and, that just as many Americans have died as a direct result of those atrocities at Gitmo as have died in the WTC towers!

  • Obama last week had one of his talking heads say he wasn't going to prosecute; & in his own words, "..nothing will be gained by spending out time & energy laying blame for the past"

However, with more revelations & public dissent, he had to back-peddle

If he wanted to make right, he would prosecute from the TOP down - Blaming only the lawyers allows compartmentalization of the issue away from top & room for legal wrangling to dump the issue

  • Says the man who should've court martialled for flying a plane to the ground and exposing military secrets.

  • Orange you glad they didn't say... oh wait.

  • Bring in General Miller and the 24 members of the "Tiger Team", ask them what they were teaching at Abu Ghraib. What contractors were giving orders to enlisted personel? The link between Guantanamo and Abu Gharaib is what the torture advocates are hiding from. All of the politicians in Washington and all the policy makers at the Pentagon that declared "Bad Apples" must be brought to task. Thank God for former Brig. General Janis Karpinski she is going to be very important in this investigation.

  • The following nine were the scapegoated soldiers that were sold down the river by the Bush Administration. They continue to be sold out by all of those who still try to defend the indefensible.... Cpl. Charels A. Graner Jr., Pfc. Lynndie England, Staff Sgt. Ivan Frederick II, SPC. Javal S. Davis, Spc. Jeremy Sivits, Spc. Sabrina Harman, Spc. Megan Ambuhl, Spc. Armin J. Cruz Jr., Spc. Roman Krol.... America should be angry that these soldiers have taken all the blame for Abu Ghraib alone.

  • McSame has hardly been a Republican.

His whole career has been a RINO farce and he should not have been allowed to run since he is not a "Natural Born Citizen" of America. But the men behind the curtain allowed him as their choice to keep the eyes off the Kenyan version of McSame.

  • VOTE these worthless pieces of lying hypocritical dung OUT of office! I got your banana republic right here GOP!

  • George Bush is a confessed war criminal.

George Bush must be tried and executed.

  • Banana Republics also let their central bank buy the debt that no one wants. They are doing exactly that. Also Banana republics run their economies on monopoly money, just what their doing now. Banana republics invade countries without consulting with We the people. If it looks like a Banana Republic, Smells like a Banana Republic its a Banana Republic. The collapse of the US dollar will prove this observation and belief.

  • So was the Nuremberg Trials conducted by a Banna Republic? And even so, what's wrong with Banana Republics?

Pinochet was tried in Chile, and the Truth and Reconcilliation Commission in Guatemala at least made war criminals somehow accountable, .. at least so that it does not happen again.

  • Fuck your banana republic you racist pieces of shit.

  • hay McCain ...eat this Banana

Abu Ghraib seven US soldiers were convicted in courts martial, sentenced to federal prison, and dishonorably discharged from service for Torture related events...

Former U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice verbally OK'd the CIA's request to subject alleged al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah to water boarding

Why hasn't Obama Pardoned the 7 convicted?

  • Right. It's a Banana Republic not because we tortured people, but because we're going to prosecute the people tortured.

  • IF YOU BREAK THE LAW - IT IS NOT A BANANA REPUBLIC TO CONVICT CRIMINALS!

This McSame stance is just further proof the fellow has never stood for the Constitution. He, with this statement, proves why his non-"Natural Born Citizen" arse would have been far worst then the non-"Natural Born Citizen" Kenyen we have in the Whitehouse now.

If the two (same as one) party system did not exist, then our Republic would be safe for ourselves and our kids.

  • I guess these guys will never been seen dead or alive with a banana. No Chiquita for you!

  • Bad for future presidents? bad for future precedents set for future administrations? "punishing" people from past administrations equals a banana repubilc? these are the things that GOPers are using as arguments to prevent the prosecution of the Bush administration? I think it would be great for our country if current administrations know that they will certainly be prosecured by the next administration, or at least investigated and exposed, for any wrong doing that they may be doing now.

  • What?! I can't believe my ears

So the GOP is now the Party of

    "Just Following Orders."

Holy Cow, what happen to the GOP cry of the Rule of Law?

Every citizen needs to confront these politicians in no small way.

  • Boy, you'd never see the Republicans demanding a show trial for some silly thing a President did! Those bastards have principles!

  • What a loaded term, 'banana republic'.

  • These guys don't come up with solutions they just get together and find out what's the best name to call people. I heard today on CNN that the RNC is taking heat from state Republican leaders for not embracing calling democrats socialist from now on.

  • These motherfuckers don't make anysense. In America it isn't a good idea for the people to hold the leaders of the country acountable for any mistakes that they may have made but in countries like Iran or Venezula that's exactly what they expect the people of those countries to do. America and Israel are going to cause WW3 due to their hatred for countries who don't want to submit to them.

  • In Banana Republics, they also torture.

    What say you now McCain?

  • It's very surprising to see so many people continue to line up in support of Bush. Do they think that they can make hay out this dry, salted earth? Bush is so unpopular, it doesn't make any sense to defend him. After all, even Limbaugh hates him and constantly talks about Bush being a "socialist."

Maybe this is a good thing. Hopefully their reflexive loyalty will drag them even further down.

  • Bush made it into a "Banana Republic"

  • from the just say no camp. to the contra affair of the reagan erra to todays two war's and an economy in ruin's bothe of these admin. are two of the most evil to ever gov. this great land...impeach now..impeach imp

torture is nothing as an issue compared to the big picture here. (no one ws murderd)

fk. the incumbants...time for term limits. our gov. need's an enima....fire em all. every single one bothe sides of the isle every one thats been in congress and on the hill for more than 10 yrs.

  • The law is the law. The law does not care about parties. The Attorney General must follow his job description, investigate and prosecute where crimes are found. The congress must follow it's job description and do the same. We must affirm to ouselves and show the rest of the world we are a nation of laws.

  • Did Karl Rove stick his ass up McCain's ass like a puppet?

  • It's not a witch hunt! a witch hunt is a search that doesn't exist e.g. witches. this will be a legitimate search and prosecution.

  • Read some history McCain!

Do you even know what "Banana Republic" means?!

  • i feel that the power of coporate america has shifted the country towards being a banana republic in the sense of government being controlled by corporate interests, but it's definitely the republicans fault

  • This is coming from a bunch of criminals that invaded a sovereign country based on a lie, detained hundreds of innocent people for no reason, tortured people to continue a war based on fear, destroyed the world economy while they were at it and they have the balls to call the prosecution of these war criminals, that they are protecting with these acts a move of a banana republic. This should be the end of the Republican Party that predicates sessesion, war and hate.

  • Japanese were executed by America for Waterboarding during WWII.

  • do i get that right?

if politicians give a shit about laws and the constitution and the successor comes to the conclusion to uphold the principals of the republic and prosecute them - that is called a banana-republic

if that is so - tell me where to find a banana-republic and i will move there ;)

  • oh crap the Republicans have discovered a new phrase.

    here we go again.......

And this from the same McCain who called it torture.

  • Banana republic: Any country that pisses us off by not letting our corporations suck the country dry while their citizens starve enough that we have to send in the CIA to kill someone to make it right. This should be the definition in Websters dictionary.

  • "Banana Republic" :

Infers a cultural stereotype that borders on racial caricature. This isn't about prosecuting those we 'disagree with'; it's about prosecuting CRIMINALS

    "Witch hunts" :

The 'witches' of Salem were victims of hysteric superstition. Federal and International Law prohibits TORTURE. It's not a superstition.

    "Show Trials" :

Stalin used 'show trials' to purge political opponents. Again, this is a political smear. TORTURERS MUST be brought to trial!

  • GOP rhetoric today is becoming heated. This is the defense strategy of a defeated Junta Party. They are setting the stage for a Reactionary insurgency.

The CRIMES of the previous Administration MUST be prosecuted, otherwise America Itself is Complicit!

  • well said these ass hats are trying to make this partisan

  • Yea what the fuck are these idiots saying...

  • well done.

  • GOP talking points today:

    BANANA

    BANANA

    BANANA

  • those two guys are unpatriotic

  • i hope they hang Bush and Cheney by their toes.

  • I agree - putting members of the previous admin on trial is something that happens with disturbing frequency in banana republics, where rogue leaders often act with no regard for the law. But if the Bush admin hadn't behaved like some rogue banana republic regime and acted with no regard for the law, we wouldn't be confronting this issue would we?

And congrats to all you Repubs for reading the same propaganda points today. You're much more entertaining when you're singing the same stupid song.

  • Witch hunt? Justice is a witch hunt? The USA made those banana republics possible. Now the chickens have come home to roost. It's like the economy, stupid. You should have gotten out before the whole thing went to hell. As far as Kit Bond is concerned, he shows how backward Missouri really is. He makes me ashamed to live here. Thank God he's leaving.

  • All republicans who support this right wing junta that blatently broke US laws as well as violating the agreements under the Geneva Convention are WAR CRIMINALS!

The right wingers that try to justify torture are a f'ing joke. Their argument is that torture got us information (which is highly questionable in the first place). Just because someone likes to get a high on cocaine doesn't make it more legal.

Torturing under US laws carries a punishment of the Death Penalty.

  • Do these goofs know what a Banana Republic is? It's a country that's dependent on limited agriculture with a few corporate elites keeping everyone else poor. Correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause I'm not an american, but isn't that exactly what the GOP is all about?

  • Yeah, that's what banana republic actually means. But in common parlance, banana republic has come to mean small states with egocentric dictators. Often dictators in banana republics will put their predecessors on trial for political reasons.

  • Holding those that hold office to the laws of the land = Banana Republic.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Republican Party.

  • more like the bannana repuplican party ;)

  • They torture people in Banana Republics?

I thought they were just a place to buy cool pants and shirts!

  • Wait wait, We Don't Torture. Bush told me so. Wasn't the USA a Banana Republic under Bush/Cheney? Doesn't a banana republic lie cheat and destroy everything it touches? while at the same time standing proud as the country disintegrates claiming "We are the Best"

  • Diversion and misdirection at it's finest. 'No need to prosecute those guys that broke the law. Just focus on fixing the problems they made (and blame the guy trying to clean up the mess).'

I like that Mitchell made Bond eat his words at the end.

  • Oh...... Mr. McCain, shame on you.

  • "this whole thing of punishing people in past administrations reminds me of a banana republic"

Yeah i can see the logic in that... Weren't they for a trail of Saddam when he was caught? Irak put the past administration (Saddam Hussein) on trail because of his actions.. so that makes them also a banana republic?

  • No one is above the law, except Bush & Cheney

  • Next big thing in the Conservative Big Idea Factory: Banana Hammock parties.

  • I lol'd.... well done.

  • dear McCain, we have laws. Laws that we must live by and Bush and his people broke the laws. Its not that we did not like what Bush did, he broke the law. We need to put the people who brake the laws in jail. If we dont then what happens next time? do we let the next group go? No. we need to put are foot down and stop it from happening any more. Sorry but your wrong.

  • all republicans should immediately be hung as traitors to this country.listen to these asshats. they know bush/cheney and the rest are guilty of war crimes and listen to the shit they spew now.comparing breaking this countries laws to a "disagreement". these people should be taken to task immediately and shown no quarter....

  • It's official, McCain sold his soul to Chaney a couple years ago.

To hear him try to dismiss the fact that our government tortured prisoners is sickening.

  • Yeah really convenient you shitheads. But of course they will get away with it as they always do. Rich republicans get away with everything.

  • Damn nice banane republic!

  • Kill the tortures

  • Nah, let's kill the people who ordered the torture.
