If I could go back in time to do one thing, on a short list would be to watch Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the original My Fair Lady broadway musical. God bless Julie Andrews. She is one of a kind.
Man... the roar of the crowd when she starts singing. That's got to feel so amazing, all that love and support. She may never get back her voice as it was before the surgery, but you've got to give the woman credit-- she didn't let it stop her. I was so happy for her when she decided to sing again, and hearing the audience's response made me happy too.
@maevenc Ditto. That MultiLlort was a horridly funny troll whose account is now closed, anyway; good riddance. This was a brilliant performance and while I personally wouldn't get so welled up with emotion over this particular song as to cry, I wouldn't find it terribly odd for someone else to react that way to Julie's singing. And to express one's reactions to a video is precisely the purpose of the comment feature--doing so is hardly attention-seeking.
Ok I have not seen the comment that everying os talking about. Nor do I really care. I will say that the mark of a great actor/singer is when they can drag the emotion of the song/ Scene out of the person watching. I have to say that both of them can do that. I have seen Micheal in concert and he was great. So everyone stop talking about who cried or didn't cry. The person who wrote that post that everyone is writing about, to me was giving whoever a great complement by saying what they did.
People need to calm down and watch the video! If someone cried then let them! If you think they are attention seekers then don't say anything on the subject because guess what? YOU ARE GIVING THEM ATTENTION! I guess I am an attention seeker too because I CRIED! Please lets just listen to two amazing singers!
@MultiLlort thanks for the comment but i wasn't looking to get any feedback. and it's nice cause julie lost her voice and to see her singing again is touching. no need to freak out.
@MultiLlort haha i think you need to get a grip. live and let live. jeez. in case you havent noticed, other people have said they cried too. so i dont know why you singled me out, but stop being rude. this conversation is over.
@rishea92 Well, then they're all over the top just like you. There's no need to get so freaked out by it. i'm just saying that there are things worth crying over. Julie Andrews singing about the rain on a plane in Spain is not one of them. You need to relax.
@MultiLlort aww of course :) oh and next time you call someone a drama queen, think about who started the completely irrational argument we're in now. ok?
@rishea92 I'm pretty sure you started it by being a ridiculous basket case. Responsible citizens such as myself cannot simply stand by while stupidity and attention-seeking garbage remains prominent.
@MultiLlort haha wow you're special. life's gonna be hard for you if you walk around thinking you're so much better than everyone else and feel the need to bash people for expressing an emotion. i hope no one questions your intelligence if you happen to feel an emotion that someone else doesn't agree with. and for the record, i'm anything but attention seeking. i was just saying how i felt to other people who are fans. no one seemed to have a problem with it. i wish you luck. youre gonna need it
@rishea92 If you cried, you expressed emotion. Where the "attention-seeking" part comes in is when you decided to start talking about it in youtube comments. Nobody cares, and nobody thinks that you're deep or profound because you turn into a leaky faucet when Julie Andrews starts singing about the rain in spain. Stop making such a big deal out of this. It'd all be over if you'd just learn how to get over yourself.
@MultiLlort I'm sorry, but this post is hilarious on so many levels! A person makes an innocuous comment on a particular clip's emotional impact, and this upsets you? Enough so that you just HAVE to post a comment bashing them?! And yet, *they're* the "attention-seeking basket case". Physician, heal thyself.
@smichelle65 I'm not the one upset. (S)he's the one crying. AND (s)he's the one who kept carrying it on. This has been done for a month. Why are you bringing it up again, you psycho? Jeez, just get over it already. I didn't realize that so many of you were so obsessed about what other people think.
@MultiLlort I read the post in question; all the poster said was that (s)he cried when Julie Andrews started singing, and you suddenly go on the attack, calling the poster "unhinged". And when I point out the irrationality of your response that Stevie Wonder can see, I'm suddenly a "psycho". Suuuuure you're "not upset" XD. If you're trolling, you're doing it badly; if you're itching for an internet fight, at least pick one on a ballsier video than a "Divas of Broadway" clip! Jeez indeed.
@smichelle65 I'm pretty sure that you're the one who keeps coming back for more. And by the way, I didn't use the word "unhinged" at all even though you put it in quotes. I didn't "Go on the attack," I just pointed out that people who beg for attention by talking about their over-the-top reactions to a youtube video are begging to be called out. And if you're going to get involved in a fight that you had nothing to do with, try something ballsier than a Julie Andrews Clip. Jeez indeed indeed.
A sure sign that MC is very emotional? Watch his chin at 3.00 and 3.17 when he asks about his slippers. Everything is getting remade, retconned, adapted... Either people are getting uninspired or uber nostalgic (both I guess... and running after easy money). Or letting their inner fan show up...
I'm a HUGE Julie Andrews fan, and I love Michael Crawford, so this is pure win!
Like most people, I know Michael Crawford from the original Phantom soundtrack. Therefore...this is trippy! It's like when I listen to Michael's "O Holy Night": "...The Phantom singing THIS?"
Another thought occurs to me: What kind of Christine would Julie Andrews have made? Wait! Don't say! I know the answer to that: an awesome one! : D
On another note, I don't blame the audience for FLIPPING OUT! lol.
@Lehmann108 Yes, to answer your question this was after her botched surgery - it was filmed 10.16.00. That's why the audience goes so crazy when she actually 'sang'. And, that's why MC gets so emotional when he looks at her after dipping her. Knowing MC he could totally put himself in her place and being the caring, emotional person he is - he gets overwhelmed. Sides, there were a lot of very zealous fans of MC there & they tend to be a bit scary times. He had normal fans there too but...
@Lehmann108 Yes this was...an interesting note...I watched this the night it first aired on PBS and they were interviewing Crawford in the TV station. @TheLorraineO i really disagree with that. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge julie andrews fan haha. but no one could top audrey's performance in that movie. everything about her was perfect. but hey, i guess it's just a matter of opinion :-)
@avenueyay I agree completely. I adore Julie Andrews, and recognize that she originated the character in MFL, but Audrey was divine (even though her voice was dubbed). The film is magical and I hope the remake will be as loverly, although I don't know how it could be.
Argh! I'm so annoyed that they're remaking this...what a load of rubbish. They're taking out some songs and making the film go in a different direction.
@TheLorraineO That's been done to death, the Academy snubbed Audrey and made a huge deal about it. People have been unfairly spiteful over the role for the past 40 years. Really? Who cares. They both played the role and did a marvelous job with it, so what's with all the hate?
I once saw Robert Goulet serenade Julie with "If Ever I Would Leave You" from their Camelot days; how great it would be if these two did the same number in concert some day.
@ksulie they do - but it also probably has to do wih this being post her throat surgery muck upo that left her unable to sing, so it would have amplified their response to her.
This is the 1991 Tony Awards right? then, her throat problems hadn't happened yet (that was 1997), so that's not why she was singing in an Alto range...
@EmiRuth It's from a 2000 concert of Julie and many other B'way stars. This is a charming piece, I wish Mr. C would do Henry Higgins if not in a long show run - he's 68 and retired to New Zeland - but in a video or concert cd.
@IKNOWuyeah Me too! I don't know what it is about Harrison's version that just profoundly moves me. When he actually does sing, like on the original London recording, his voice is actually quite pretty.
paulaszum is sooooooooooooo right! Michael Crawford was the perfect Phantom and would have been an astounding and brilliant Henry Higgins.......plus hes so sexy!
Dear "DragonHeart06"...Michael is incredibly graceful himself and Andrews should know incredibly lucky she was to be onstage with Michael as well. Michael is a superstar himself and has worked with other very famous people as well before Julie ( who I highly respect also). How about we show BOTH people the same amount of respect. I also love Michaels wonderful smile as well. Lols. Wish it had been me in his arms. Wish they would perform together again.
The audience was so supportive of them, it's great =)
Two of my favorite people! I love the way they both move (Julie is so graceful!), and Micheal's grin melts my heart. I think he knew how increadably lucky he was to be with Andrews on stage. Bravo to them both!
i love julie andrews!!! her voice hasn't changed a bit over the years (despite her inability to sing as high, but her speaking voice - same now as in the sound of music!)
I saw Michael in concert a few years ago and talk about the complete showman! Not only did he cause the folks at the Cerritos Center in California to go crazy but his humour and wit along with a good voice and great emotion was awesome to behold. People were yelling out "we love you Michael" and he started to actually tear up on stage and made the sign "I love you" with his hands. A true class act. Thanks for the memories Michael.
You are so lucky to have seen in person, mccolinphan! I think you said you saw him in at the MCIFA event this month. That must have been amazing-the pictures of him are sensational. Oh well, I'll just have to enjoy him in videos, unless he makes it out my way some day!
Michael is very bit as incredible an artist as Julie "AnimeDykePhan" and "mjfindlay1968". Just look at his "Barnum", "Phantom", "Billy" or some of his terrific films and the T.V. show "Some Mothers". He has also had some great solo Cds! I would never take anythiong away from either Michael or Julie. two class acts and two of my favorites. I was just as happy for Michael though in this clip and he did a phenominal job for a guy that didn't know he would do this song until the last minute.
I got to see Julie Andrews at the Hollywood Bowl last summer. She is a contralto now, but she is still a wonderful singer and so funny. She told us that while she can't sing as high as she used to she can "still sing the hell out of Old Man River!" She is a classy lady!
I Love this clip. I saw him interviewed on PBS when they aired this one. He was not suppose to sing the my fair lady part but the guy who was suppose to couldn't so he had to fill in.
Realmente hermoso ver a estos dos talentos maravillosos y con una canción increíble, de hecho una de mis canciones favoritas, además del tema del vals.
I was wondering if it was after her surgery. Even though she had to go downan octive, she is still the most amazing singer ever. I am so happy to hear her voice again.
I love how Michael held Julie.. If I were there watching them, I would have also stood up and give them my applause... Two great actors... Love them both!
Michaels a doll and I wish just once somebody would let him play Henry Higgins onstage. Such a talented, handsome, classy guy. Now I know why Julie was smiling so much. I would be to if I had Mike holding me in his arms! LOLs.
From the audiences reaction youd think that they had just seen the greatest miracle ever. But then, had I been there-Id have been on my feet screaming too!
Your soooooooooooo right...I wish I were the one in Michaels arms as well. Hes just so cute and handsome at the same time and I love his voice. It doesn't matter if hes singing or speaking!
This production was the first time that Julie Andrews sang a note on any stage after her botched throat operation. She cannot hit the high notes of the song and chooses the lower octave but it doesn't matter. Dame Julie is a legend! The audience's responsive standing ovation is an outpouring of love for Julie to hear her sing anything on stage again.
This was a terrific performance. I can't believe Michael Crawford can sing that well! I first saw him in the movie "Hello, Dolly!", and from that I assumed he got by solely on personality. Wonderful job!
I've read about Michael Crawford after I decided to find out about the cast of "Hello, Dolly!", so I did know that. I don't perticularly care for Andrew Lloyd Webber's work, so I naturally don't keep up. (Not that there's anything wrong with his work -- I myself love "Sunset Boulevard")
And if there is one other guy that could play the part perfectly it would be Michael Crawford. Thats coming from someone who has always loved Rex Harrison as professsor Henry Higgins and has the upmost respect for the mans acheivements. I've also had the great pleasure of seeing Michael live onstage and he is a great talent. Plus why even compare...just watch and enjoy Michael and Julies performance.
@MI6MI5 Well...I'm not sure about that. The only real difference between someone who can sing and someone who can't is simply biological. He may have had the biological ability to sing and didn't train his voice at all. You can hear bits where he actually sings in the Original London recoding and he can sing in tune.
Both Julie and Michael are great in this. If the great Julie Andrews can appreciate the Awesome talent of Michael Crawford then we should be able to. Like Julie, Michael has been in the business since the 1950s so there BOTH WONDERFUL!
I even read a qoute the next day in the paper from Julie Andrews about how thrilled she was to work with Michael so if she can respect this first class guy it would be great if we could. Long live Rex and Michael and these to were pretty damn amazing together!
I love Rex Harrison to but it is soooo unfair to Michael to say he can only play a couple of roles. If anything in his fifty years in the business Michael has proven over and over again he is an amazingly versatile actor. You proved it yourself when you mentioned 2 of MCs roles that couldn't be more different. And if you really listened to Michael here and watched him he would be one of the very few actors today who could pull off a great Henry Higgins!
I totally know what you mean about crying! I get so emotional over musicals, especially with amazing actors and actresses like Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison! Nobody beats that duo! I with I coulda seen them in person! OMG!! I think I could Michael more seriously in this role if i didnt love Rex so much, or if i didnt keep thinking of Michael singing "we've got elegance!" or "insolent boy!"
I don't know what I'm doing here at home. it may be crying, or maybe laughing. IDK. But there is know thing i do know. when i watch this i am OVERJOYED with the crowds reaction. Why? Because thats how i would feel and so should the rest of America. X'D. Thank YOU for putting this on You tube. I REALLY do appreciate it.
I agree Julie made a great Eliza in her prime and going by this Michael would have been one heck of a Henry Higgins and this is from someone who has nothing but respect for Rex Harrison!
Come now, I hope you realize that Julie was the original Eliza in My Fair Lady... and fantastic. It's hardly fair to judge her on a little cameo at the end of her career. Watch her in Wouldn't It Be Loverly, which is on Youtube from a TV performance in the early 1960's... Then dare to say she's anything but fantastic!
This was taped after she had the surgery that mostly took away her singing voice. She was the original Eliza on Broadway and was VERY well-received. Audrey Hepburn had to lip-sync to another's voice in the movie, although she was a talented actress.
HE IS AMAZING!!!! Michael is the best. Julie is the best Eliza. These two are amazing together. The part where she says "I've washed my face and hands before I came" made me smile. Its always good to hear her voice
MICHAEL CRAWFORD and Julie Andrews will always BOTH be amazing and the BEST. Appreciate both performers and performances. Michael barely had two days notice to learn this song and routine and had never performed this role before in his life. Everybody else had a lot more time to rehearse. Michaels tenderness and class with Julie added to a great Broadway moment. Like I said these two need to be together in something on stage!
If Julie Andrews will always be the best then michael Crawford will also always be the best. I saw him in Phantom and Barnum as well. I've also seen this guy bring an audience to there feet like Julie did. Watch this video closely and you'll see they both bring there own magic to this. Plus i'm sure Julie would say Michael is absolutely the true definition of a true gentleman. Take one or the other away from this video and it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun!
Breathtaking! Almost a bit of irony, in that it was Julie's wonderous voice that once haunted Audrey Hepburn's vocally dubbed, but nevertheless timeless portrayal of Eliza, in the film version. A classic many believed should have cast Andrews.
Michael and Julie are both amazing.I've had the pleasure of enjoying there wonderful talents for many years now. My dream would be to see Julie team up with Michael and do something together on Michaels new PBS special do out by the holidays 2007. That would be THE GREATEST TEAM-UP in the history of theater or entertainment.
Julie has said in many interviews that before her surgery, she did indeed have a 4-octave range. It is true that a 4-ocatave range is very rare, but this is Julie Andrews we are talking about. She's just that amazing :)
I think you're wrong about the 4 octaves thing. :S i think it's quite impossible to have a 4 octave range unless you're a man who can do fallsetto. I know a soprano range is 2 octaves. At the max realy she could have 3. She's one of the greats though.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm not a trained singer and I have three octaves. (I'm a woman.) I do know what I'm talking about, as I read music and play the piano. Some trained women definitely can have four octaves, although it's rare. It also doesn't necessarily mean the quality of the notes at the low and high end is good enough to sing. For instance, I can sing "ah" in E2 (2 Es above middle C) but couldn't sing a whole song in that range.
If I could go back in time to do one thing, on a short list would be to watch Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the original My Fair Lady broadway musical. God bless Julie Andrews. She is one of a kind.

@ksulie they do - but it also probably has to do wih this being post her throat surgery muck upo that left her unable to sing, so it would have amplified their response to her.
Love Julie!!!!
fatheranthony4pope 1 year ago
This is the 1991 Tony Awards right? then, her throat problems hadn't happened yet (that was 1997), so that's not why she was singing in an Alto range...
EmiRuth 1 year ago
@EmiRuth It's from a 2000 concert of Julie and many other B'way stars. This is a charming piece, I wish Mr. C would do Henry Higgins if not in a long show run - he's 68 and retired to New Zeland - but in a video or concert cd.

Two of my favorite people! I love the way they both move (Julie is so graceful!), and Micheal's grin melts my heart. I think he knew how increadably lucky he was to be with Andrews on stage. Bravo to them both!

She told us that while she can't sing as high as she used to she can "still sing the hell out of Old Man River!" She is a classy lady!
aks477578 2 years ago
That's okay, being a contralto. Some famous contralto singers like Cher is doing great because of her voice. And Julie is still wonderful now!

BlueOne007 3 years ago 6

Plus why even compare...just watch and enjoy Michael and Julies performance.
mcbarnumphan 4 years ago 2
Actually, Rex Harrison could not sing but somehow he played the part perfectly
MI6MI5 4 years ago
@MI6MI5 Well...I'm not sure about that. The only real difference between someone who can sing and someone who can't is simply biological. He may have had the biological ability to sing and didn't train his voice at all. You can hear bits where he actually sings in the Original London recoding and he can sing in tune.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
Both Julie and Michael are great in this. If the great Julie Andrews can appreciate the Awesome talent of Michael Crawford then we should be able to. Like Julie, Michael has been in the business since the 1950s so there BOTH WONDERFUL!

I even read a qoute the next day in the paper from Julie Andrews about how thrilled she was to work with Michael so if she can respect this first class guy it would be great if we could. Long live Rex and Michael and these to were pretty damn amazing together!
mcbarnumphan 4 years ago 2
I love Rex Harrison to but it is soooo unfair to Michael to say he can only play a couple of roles. If anything in his fifty years in the business Michael has proven over and over again he is an amazingly versatile actor. You proved it yourself when you mentioned 2 of MCs roles that couldn't be more different. And if you really listened to Michael here and watched him he would be one of the very few actors today who could pull off a great Henry Higgins!
mcbarnumphan 4 years ago
I totally know what you mean about crying! I get so emotional over musicals, especially with amazing actors and actresses like Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison! Nobody beats that duo! I with I coulda seen them in person! OMG!! I think I could Michael more seriously in this role if i didnt love Rex so much, or if i didnt keep thinking of Michael singing "we've got elegance!" or "insolent boy!"

I agree Julie made a great Eliza in her prime and going by this Michael would have been one heck of a Henry Higgins and this is from someone who has nothing but respect for Rex Harrison!
mcbarnumphan 4 years ago 3
I love Julie andrews and this is a cute rendetion.
But she can't do Eliza.
shadow2551 4 years ago
Come now, I hope you realize that Julie was the original Eliza in My Fair Lady... and fantastic. It's hardly fair to judge her on a little cameo at the end of her career. Watch her in Wouldn't It Be Loverly, which is on Youtube from a TV performance in the early 1960's... Then dare to say she's anything but fantastic!
chantdonchant 4 years ago 5
This was taped after she had the surgery that mostly took away her singing voice. She was the original Eliza on Broadway and was VERY well-received. Audrey Hepburn had to lip-sync to another's voice in the movie, although she was a talented actress.
mimmar3891 2 years ago
Wasn't this after Julie's vocal mishap? I thought that was the reason for all the clapping. This was, like, the first time she'd sung since then.

Take one or the other away from this video and it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun!
mcbarnumphan 4 years ago
Breathtaking! Almost a bit of irony, in that it was Julie's wonderous voice that once haunted Audrey Hepburn's vocally dubbed, but nevertheless timeless portrayal of Eliza, in the film version. A classic many believed should have cast Andrews.

Julie has said in many interviews that before her surgery, she did indeed have a 4-octave range. It is true that a 4-ocatave range is very rare, but this is Julie Andrews we are talking about. She's just that amazing :)

Leoorchange 4 years ago
I think you're wrong about the 4 octaves thing. :S i think it's quite impossible to have a 4 octave range unless you're a man who can do fallsetto. I know a soprano range is 2 octaves. At the max realy she could have 3. She's one of the greats though.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I'm not a trained singer and I have three octaves.
