Well first off- why throw money at it when it doesn't run ? If it wont fire- then the timing has to be off...... Get a haynes manual and read up on setting the timing.
so i did a few things to my 79 camaro new double roller timing chain edelbrock new coil alternator and most of the seals intake manifold waterpump timing cover etc and i have spark and starting fluid watever it takes but the engine wont even spudder just cranks slowly and if im lucky it will backfire ive been adjust the ignition timing and still nothing i used two batteries to it ive tried to jump it from other cars still cranks slowly and wont spudder i need help with it
is that engine on a mini pallet?! you gotta teach me those home made engine cradles! i really cant afford any welding or metal or anything for that matter. i got a budget motor. i just finished rebuilding a chevy 350 from a 79 camaro, but i got no cradle to start it on. ive seen guys work with wood and cynder blocks. and two by fours...any tips please!
@erico39shields1 If it is a mostly complete engine - heads/block/pistons/etc...and it runs or turns over at least, depending on the locale- from $250-$350 If it is just the bare block with no pistons or crank or anything- maybe $100 ? Just my guess - I bought a complete, but disassembled 350 , parts in boxes for $100
@simmymini Pull the coil wire off the distributor and put it near metal....valve cover or something- about 1/8 of an inch gap- have someone crank it over and see if there is spark.
Chevy 350's are nice, well built engines. I have a 350 in my K1500 '94 Suburban. Thank God I just passed the road test yesterday, so you better believe I'll be driving that thing everywhere! = D
thank god im not the only one with the ford blue valve covers. i have a '79 k5 blazer that im restoring and right now im replacing the headgaskets. im also painting the valve covers chevrolet orange so it doesnt look like i have a ford motor haha. my question is it takes me about 5 minutes to crank the thing and then i have to sit there with my foot on the gas gassing it for about 3 minutes before it runs and then it idles really hard.
what is causing that? idk if its the carb or what.
@GRIZZLYMINTALLDAY Chevy used blue factory for a few years if I'm not mistaken. Do you pump it at least twice or three times before you try to crank if it's cold ? You HAVE to pump it at least once to set the choke. Make sure the choke is closing after it sits overnight (or long enough to thoroughly cool down- 3-4 hours I'd guess. Pump it once and see that the choke closes. Also- look in the carb (hold the choke open) and pump it - see if fuel squirts in. Thats where I'd start looking
1990 is computer...... usually fuel pump will keep running if it starts....they usually fail and wont start when you try to start the engine..... could be any one of a zillion stupid sensors......... good luck. Buy a code reader and see if it throws a code when it stops.
@jtw1113 what year ? could be many things...... ignition module, plugged fuel filter..... something in the tank like wood or something that plugs the inlet, then floats away once there is no suction..... bad carb/sticking float wiring/ign switch problems
i was told, it could be the alternator but no way my battery's brand new and the alternator couldn't shut her down like she's out of gas? after she shuts down she start's right up but 5 to 10 minutes she shuts back down!
I have a Chevy g20 with a factory 350 5.7L with flow masters
my problem is the darn thing start's fine run's for a good ten minute's and completely shuts down and when she's cold if i mash the gas there's this squeal coming from the carb or injector's not sure... it's not the fuel pump i don't think, reason being i can hear it humming when i turn the key! i change the gas line filter that wasn't it... do i need a new carb or injector's ?need help....any one please!
dont get me wrong cause I'm a die hard chevy fan but the 350 has always had a very choppy idle from the factory, the ford smallblock has a smooth idle and I like them both but I always have to build my smallblock chevy motors into strokers to get the smooth sound
have your battery grounded to the block, positive on starter like usual, a hot off the battery to the BAT terminal on dist. cap, then a wire to the S terminal on starter, touch it to hot to crank
No that backfiring is caused by the engines timing being off, so when he gives it RPM's the carb spits more fuel in the cylinder ports causing an explosion inside the cylinder chambers!
if you notice its just got the manifolds on it it will pop with no pipes even with open headers and yea it may be your gaskets start it up at night you will see it if thats it just my thoughts
what is the popping sound? I have a 63 Chevy Impala quad carburetor Eldebrock. It will crank and stuff I just don't know what the popping is. Some one told me it might be the manifold/gaskets? Not sure. That one sounds a lot like mine.
haha-well, I dont know who you are but just a little advice, you can rev it up like that all you want because you cant "suck" a valve out of a motor. you on the other hand probably could suck a valve out of a motor
well i dont know who you are but just a little advice quit revving that motor up like that or u will suck a valve right out of it ps i am a 21 year old gurl with a hot little 425 horse 355 whith aluminum heads hahahah good luck with that
Ahhh yes...she sounds great....i've got the Goodwrench 350 in my 65 Chevy c20..a picture of my truck is available on my myspace page...well the front end of it anyway :) But yeah...great sounding engine.. I love the rumble of a SBC
man that runs smooth, but might be a little out of time actually. you should invest in a good mallory of MSD ignition, edelbrock intake & Carb, gear drive distributor, and some headers, vavoom, theres a hot motor
agreed on not putting a pos elderbrock carb on it, i was pro elderbrock till i was around 17 and got my first dp. fuel bowls are hella bigger on holley than elderbrock..well i could go on and one..happy truckin'
well it seems like its still in great shape. you just cant put a good chevy down. haha i say that just as my motor in my truck blew earlier at work today.
ok, buddy. it shouldnt pop even though its "headers" thoughs are really just exhaust manafolds, not hheaders. and if it were built to run open hheaders it wouldnt pop no matter whhat. so dude learn your stuff. ill be the first to admit i dont know half of some of this stuff but i do know that your burning it up. but hhey it sucks anyways.
Well, it ain't no frikin rice burner, so how would you know anything about it ? I know- If I bolt on a cold air intake, and one of those plastic carb spacers, and maybe a special air filter, can I get another 100 horses out of it ???
First of all- theyre called WORK CLOTHES for a reason asshole...... second of all batteries won't start gasoline on fire.....thirdly, I bet you don't even have a z28.... its probably a fucking honda civic rice burner.....
I'd like to post it when I finally get it turnkey.
I don't yet have a cammera with audio/video. How much do they cost? I'd like to post some stuff on here. What type of cammera do you use farmall? Thanks again. ~Jim
All of my movies up until the 'hydrogen test' video, were recorded with an old goldstar VHS camcorder I got at a garage sale for $50. The 'hydrogen test' video, and all future videos will be recorded with my Sony digital camera (DSC-H2) that I got on ebay brand new for $140.
Hey IH man. How's it going? Thanks for posting a great video. You have inspired me to do the exact same thing. You see I've been trying to sell a 77 350 I picked up stuck for $80. With some gentle persuation & lots of used oil it rolls over now. Previous owner had it in the back of a pickup in the rain for 2 months. It should run fine.
One thing I am doing is hooking up full cooling system to the engine -fan.
well I was going to put the gas in my basement, and the battery at the house next door, but I didnt have long enough hoses or cables !!! Oh, and by the way- last time I checked, there was a battery under the hood right next to the engine in most cars....
i have a 1988 starion that im putting a chevy 350 engine into it. this is a nice sounding engine. might want to move the battery and gas can farther away from each other and the engine next time though. any suggestions on putting this engine in the starion would be nice. thanks!
Small correction on my part, the 41' plymouth railway locomotive we have actually has a French LeRoi V8, not a mopar. But ours still has that ploppidy sound at idle, just in an obvious much louder version. XD
I just replaced my plugs and dist rotor. and wires, when I started the motor the manf, went red hot and it started miss firing, I went to udjust the timeing but the vacume housing is in the way wont let the distributer turn to the right side, do you have any suggestions?
If all you did is change plugs/wires/rotor, your timing isn't off....unless you turned the distributor... If you can't time it, then you probably either have the plug wires on wrong, or the distributor is in wrong. If so you'll need to pull the distributor and re-time it. Get a shop manual. If you don't understand, then get a helper who does.
Man.. I just love that original "ploppy" sound. Mmm.. gives me goosebumps. I have a 69 chevelle with a 350. Just stock with mild cam. Pure original muscle. Good job man!
No, it has an electronic distributor from summit racing, with a high voltage coil, also from summit. I got the whole distributor on ebay used, but like new.
...yah I know. I HATE stupid people. I'm gonna start a series soon about all the run-ins I have with stupid people. Should be riveting entertainment !!!!
I plan to. It's a TH350 I believe..... The car will be front engined, on a custom chassis, or modified Ford (mustang or thunderbird) subframes.... I haven't decided yet....
Next time you do a test run on it, please hook up the cooling system to it. It doesn't take long for the combustion chambers to overheat with no water in there = warped heads. Bolt it down, too!
Hello ? Most gasoline engines require GASOLINE to operate...... therefore- Get a can, stick the fuel line in, and crank it up. Any questions ???? I run all my 'surplus' engines this way. So do 95% of the other tinkerers like me. Exactly what do you think will kill me anyway ? A fire from the gascan ? What's going to start it anyway ? LOL. There's less than a gallon in there to begin with, and what you can't see are the three CO2 and 1 drychem extinguishers that are in my shop.
but seriously i'm sure there's adequate ventilation. he wouldnt want any gasoline fumes building up in there. or exhaust fumes...i'm sure he doesnt want to pass out in there either. LOL. my grandpa worked on boat motors and was outside. the water cooled ones he would have their lower units sittin in a barrel of water with detergent. fun to watch (especially when he would put the propellar in gear) LOL
Well first off- why throw money at it when it doesn't run ? If it wont fire- then the timing has to be off...... Get a haynes manual and read up on setting the timing.

I just replaced my plugs and dist rotor. and wires, when I started the motor the manf, went red hot and it started miss firing, I went to udjust the timeing but the vacume housing is in the way wont let the distributer turn to the right side, do you have any suggestions?
shopwelder 4 years ago
If all you did is change plugs/wires/rotor, your timing isn't off....unless you turned the distributor... If you can't time it, then you probably either have the plug wires on wrong, or the distributor is in wrong. If so you'll need to pull the distributor and re-time it. Get a shop manual. If you don't understand, then get a helper who does.

Man.. I just love that original "ploppy" sound. Mmm.. gives me goosebumps. I have a 69 chevelle with a 350. Just stock with mild cam. Pure original muscle. Good job man!

Does it still have points?
giberish9 3 years ago
No, it has an electronic distributor from summit racing, with a high voltage coil, also from summit. I got the whole distributor on ebay used, but like new.

demoman442 4 years ago
No, why don't you tell me........ After all, I was actually here, running it.
farmall1938 4 years ago
a low compression engine if it is from 1979
Fantafare 4 years ago
almost 3 times the weight of the original VW Beetle motor.. :-)
You fitting the chevy transmission too ?
LeonSzillard 4 years ago
I plan to. It's a TH350 I believe..... The car will be front engined, on a custom chassis, or modified Ford (mustang or thunderbird) subframes.... I haven't decided yet....

Gota love the sound of a v8.
postaldood 4 years ago
Next time you do a test run on it, please hook up the cooling system to it. It doesn't take long for the combustion chambers to overheat with no water in there = warped heads. Bolt it down, too!

Yes Mother, I will be sure to. I have the mentality of a doorknob, and cannot think for myself. Thank God you came along.....

very true.

Remember the 267 v8 gm put out for a couple of years back in 79 or 80. Had the same stroke as a 305 or 350 but a tiny bore.

What application was this engine originally from?
ClassicTVFan82 4 years ago
I bought it from a 1979 Monte Carlo, though I think it was not the original motor....
farmall1938 4 years ago
Yeah. The MC's original motor would've been the 305 V-8.
ClassicTVFan82 4 years ago
motor sound Good runs good 2. If you have the money do a valve job the exaghst valves are worn. but it still has a 100000 miles on it
55pontiacchief 4 years ago
.....and how would you know this from the video, from the slight blue smoke ??? I say it's valve seals and/or guides.......
farmall1938 4 years ago

good motor, but why the hell is there a gas can next to the motor? do you wanna die?
lemans405 4 years ago
LOL. There's less than a gallon in there to begin with, and what you can't see are the three CO2 and 1 drychem extinguishers that are in my shop.
farmall1938 4 years ago
chevy 350 motor has the fuel pump in the lower left corner of the front, just like the big block 455's used in hopped up oldsmobiles.
engines dont run off of pixie dust ;)

battery and a gas can are only within a foot of each other. he'll be fine
;)
cydonianman 4 years ago
but seriously i'm sure there's adequate ventilation. he wouldnt want any gasoline fumes building up in there. or exhaust fumes...i'm sure he doesnt want to pass out in there either. LOL. my grandpa worked on boat motors and was outside. the water cooled ones he would have their lower units sittin in a barrel of water with detergent. fun to watch (especially when he would put the propellar in gear) LOL
