If you watch the Awful Egyptian episodes, you'll realize they did some awful things to the slaves.. like cover them in sticky stuff and just have them hang around to catch mosquitoes and flies with their bodies.

I believe building the pyramids was also done to improve social cohesion and cohesion between slaves was not something they wanted, it would only lead to uprising. But I don't have my textbook with me at the moment so I'm not sure.
