Your smugness and arrogance will be well rewarded, when one day, the IWC rules that the whale meat cannot in fact be sold, and the "research" program has no economic benefit. Wonder if they would still go whaling then
I have no problem whatsoever with the IWC eliminating the "research" clause or even outlawing whaling all together. If and when that happens, unless the IWC engages the S.S. to enforce these new rules/laws, the S.S. will STILL be criminals committing acts of piracy. They have NO authority. No matter how much you believe you're "right" doesn't automatically make your actions "legal" which some people just can't seem to grasp.
They (SS) have every authority to enforce these rules, no less than any other world citizen. As under the UN World Charter for Nature 1982 (Clauses 23+24). When governments fail to enforce the laws and regulations set out in said agreement, then it is up to non-governmental groups and the public to act and intervene.
Research whaling being banned is when, not if. And when this does happen, Sea Shepherd Antartica will be no more. There work down there will be done. :-)
I wouldn't be surprised if the "research" loophole were closed and agree that it would be a good thing. However, at present, the S.S. do not have the legal right to do what they're doing per this exclusion and the fact that the U.N. defers to the IWC on issues of whaling. Perhaps if the S.S. didn't have a history of lies, hypocrisy and convicted felonies, they might be albe argue a degree credibility, but thanks to Paul, they've established themselves as a bunch of lawless nuts.
"Felonies"?. That's interesting, especially the word "convicted" Because to my knowledge, to date, what have they been charged for that makes them stand out so much more than any other conservation group?. We are all aware of actions they have taken, but what have they actually been charged with?
Is there where you're going to try to argue that all these other countries are wrong and the S.S. is right? The Norway and Canadian convictions, the Costa Rica attempted murder warrant and all the countries that yanked S.S. ship registrations?
Canada, what was the charge laid against Sea Shepherd?
Attempted murder of whom by whom?
Norway didn't lay down any charges, they could never prove any supposed ramming by S.S. The only thing that came from that was Paul Was told he wasn't welcome in Norway.
In Canada 2 S.S. officers were convicted of interfering with the seal hunt a law that, as I understand it, was put in place in part due to the previous harassment of the S.S. another other animal rights groups. The attempted murder charge in Costa Rica is for trying to ram a fishing vessel believed to be operating illegally (this claim is a bit questionable). The Norway conviction was an actual conviction, but dates back about 20 years and yes, since then, he's persona non grata.
Japan's whaling program breaches numerous international laws and treaties including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Antarctic Treaty System, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the International Convention on the Regulation of Whaling.
Japanese breched law in several terms: weaponed officials wich had to be announced where not announced|tanking up in the sancuary by an illegal operating ship from Panama|Whale meat transfer to a panamese ship|entering the new zeeland territory without permission and after a promise not to enter these waters with whaling ships again|brutality against activists who entered the whaling-ship|using a loophole to continue commercial whaling which is also illegal|Using of explosives in a sanctuary...
Japan's whaling program breaches numerous international laws and treaties including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Antarctic Treaty System, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the International Convention on the Regulation of Whaling. Time for the Australian Government to start legal proceedings to shut down a commercial whaling operation masquerading as poor science.
Its the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary declared by the International Whaling Commission, as well as a whale sanctuary declared under Australian law. The Federal Court of Australia has declared that Japanese whaling breaches Australian law. Japanese Whaling is alleged to breach several international treaties, according to a number of international legal experts. It just awaits legal proceedings to be brought, which Australia is in the process of doing.
"Its the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary declared by the International Whaling Commission" so what? I don't care the AUS gov. sue or not. And win or lose on trial. However, the illegal acts of Sea Shepherd must be judged separately.
@chinese5angel Stupid asian. Firstly, how about you learn to speak English correctly, you useless bag of crap. Secondly, how can you possibly condone the inhumane slaughter of such peaceful and majestic creatures? I don't give a damn about your stupid heritage. These animals are in danger of becoming in extinct. You're in Australian/Antarctic Waters (because you've slaughtered everything in your own waters) and so decide to rape our oceans.
Actually it is whaling that is illegal under Australian law and jurisdiction (as of Jan 15, 2008), that has not yet been tested under international law.
Ñommy, Ñommy.. I got some fried whale whim, with potatoes and coke. Delicious.

feeling-less fucking people.
This is sick and wrong.
Clearly there is no need to kill thousands of whales for scientific reasons.

They are forced to play the "research" game because people like you seem to think you have the right to tell people what they can and can't eat.
