@CaptinSuds Yes. THere is a belay person at the bottom. Individuals can brake with hand tension on their lower grip, but if a recruit starts falling the DI on belay will just drop his/her weight on the rope and the Recruit will stop.
Prior to Marine Boot, I went through Army Boot Camp and I was deathly afraid of heights, was a very long day for me and I help up the training for about 20 minutes, wasn't a good day for me :) After we returned back to the barracks my senior called me in and gave me an ass chewing and then I was marched down to the Series Commanders office and he said you will become a US Marine in 1 week, you mess up 1 more time and your out of the Corps! 4 years later I received my private pilots license :)
i'm guessing it seems scary at first but once you're actually doing it, its fun haha, but i've never done that before, it seems like a rush. and what do you say during the jumping jack?
Oh my God....This was so bad for someone afraid of heights...but I was more afraid of my drill instructors....Oh_Rah Devil Dogs.......Pvt on Repel.....
we rappeled in JROTC down a hill. We were going to do it off the school but only a few wanted to. It was fun when going down the little hill i cant wait to boot camp 2 more weeks till i enlist :D
my favorite was free falling down the tower. i remember going so fast the drill instructor yelled at me and so" why the fuck in gods name did u so fast?" to which i replied "sir i wanted get down to kill the enemy!"
Is it mandatory?? It's a privilege! One of the best days of boot camp. And you learn quickly that these training days are a time of welcome relief from the constant eyeballs of your drill instructors. Sometimes you think you'd be happy to jump out of an airplane if it would mean getting rid of them for a bit. =) All good stuff.
I am a female Marine Option in the ROTC program at Texas A&M.We do this during our weekend ocs training trips, had about 20 minutes of instructions for the first time and do the same hight. I have alot of fun doing it. There is nothing to be scared of. As long as you follow the directions you will decend smoothly.
You only do this once in bootcamp. I wish it were more though. I have gotten a few chances to do it since, but some Marines don't get the chance again.
@GTA4FREAK1149 Yes, it is mandatory. However, drill instructors and other Marine trainers ensure that you are skilled and ready to tackle the rappel tower when the time comes. My wife was more than a little apprehensive when she faced the tower in boot camp, but she loved it by the time all was said and done.
we didn't get to do this becuasl the rappel tower happened to fall on Christmas day 2010 during my cycle. Gas chamber smelled like Christmas as well

Damn, I'm going to have to do this off a 150 foot tower for JROTC. I hope my instructor is just exaggerating to scare the piss out of my.
