haha i had this with a pc like ten years ago... in the end I paid to send it into a shop who did some kind of testing and it turned out to just be an unnecessary one of those screw-in motherboard screw sockets. you know the ones that you screw into the case to then screw the motherboard screws into, there was one that didn't have a requisite hole in the mobo, and was actually randomly shorting a connection on the back!.. . you probably have it fixed now anyway :)

why dont you make some crappy techno music (modern art) sell it and with the money just buy yourself a decent computer , problem solved or since you like retrojunk could get a fairlight CVI on the cheap off ebay or something which has everything vegas can do but no need for a computer and is lighting fast, although would need usb 2 vhs to get the video onto youtube heh, but yeah hope you get it sorted

Come on man, you're an electronics guy. Can't believe you're going to let something get the best of you like this. Typically when I have hardware problems I reduce the machine to it's most basic parts it needs to run. One stick of ram, hard drive and MB. See how it runs and starts swapping things around.

@classicmacintosh The PSU is one of the first things I thought of, I tried swapping the PSU's, so now my web/games computer is running on the psu from my "work" computer and it seems to be just fine, I even had it running on the bench and tested the voltages and they all seemed to be good. My work computer is still acting up even with the other PSU in it. I'm going to try vwestlife's idea later on.

If by 'sometimes boots up' you mean tries to load XP but always gets past (or stuck on) the POST screen then it may be a faulty IDE/SATA cable.

Just a thought.

Otherwise bad RAM or heat related problem.

It could be flakey RAM. Try Memtest86 to check it.

@vwestlife Can do, I also think I should test the harddrive, as It only sometimes boots up, sometimes it will get to the windows xp logo screen and freeze there, sometimes when I first turn it on it freezes at the part where it's detecting the hardware. And other times it will be as good as gold and work.
