The movie plotline was layed out exactly like the book's was...the only difference is that in the book you see everything through the view of the boy...and it's impossible to do that in a movie..."neat" happened because the writer wanted it to be neat, he wanted the people reading the book to not be lost...I don't think that's the directors fault or the movies...the story just happened that way...I suppose they could have labeled things more.
okay so im watching the reader and like wow! this movies crazy lol! it is one of the most interesting and unique and i think brilliant movies and book i have ever heard. but some of the movie i just really don't understand. but hopefully it'll get better.
Hello, does anyone know where can I see the movie "Jude" by Kate Winslet. i'm about to see "The Reader" & I hope is really good. These kind of movies are sometimes ignored bu the audience, we're used to watching action & bloody movies. But when masterpieces like these come around like Tatasama has said, we are quick to critize the acting, instead of understanding the real meaning of the movie.
I rather watch more movies about issues like this, than watch movie like "Dance Flick" wich those kind of movies in my opinion are becoming more and more boring rather than funny.
i'm tired of all these holocaust movies, and i agree wholly with the review in that the boy's performance, cross, made the movie magical. although i believe his performance was better than winslet's and that he deserved an oscar nomination at least, i do think hers was the best of her career thus far.
the best movie i have sen in 2008...sorrry for slumdog or benjamin..or changeling..doubt...i saw all of them and the vbest by far is the reader!!!outstanding performances...kate is godess
for me it's definitely for oscars, i am not really against 'slumdog" winning the "best picture" . I guess, the reader is really captivating. Kross is really good; he portrayed the role well and so is Fienes of course.and Kate Winslet is really impressive. she deserves the award. After i watched the movie- i can't help but say It should have won the best Picture.(though, i adbor the part of hannah's suicide..:(
I would like to ask those who read the book. Why didnt Michael tell the truth to the court about Hanna? Why didnt he help her? She doesnt deserve the sentence that she got. All she wanted was to do her job. And why did he back out on seeing her in prison during the trial?
Also, please clear up if Hanna KNEW Michael Berg was in the courtroom and was her visitor that didn't show up.
It wasn't clear to me if she knew it was Michael or she didn't know who the visitor was.
Great movie - much better than Slumdog -
which won best picture. Everyone I know who saw The Reader said it was one of the best movies they ever saw. I cannot recommend this movie enough. A must see classic! I am buying the DVD the
I jsut dont get why a person would ratherj spend 16 extra years in prison or tell some strangers that she is illiterate. i dont get that. we're talking YEARS. her LIFE. her LIFE or azdmitting you cant read.
well, Michael didnt know the truth that Hanna couldnt read, she was escaping from this truth everytime he tried to show her a book, when they were together in the restaurant, he gave her the menu to make order! he tried to show her the map when they were walking, he gave her once the book to read and she refused by telling him "u read"! but it was bad that he didnt meet her when she was in the prison ;(
All those self righteous ppl please stay off your comments or attempt to critique this masterpiece. The movie is not to tell you what is right or wrong, or what is moral or immoral, it is to raise questions. If u think u are someone who has always followed his or her morals meaning you really understand the difference between what is absolutely right and absolutely wrong, then you are God.
all those self righteous ppl please stay off from even attempting to understand the beauty of ugliness of this film. It is reality and this movie shows that reality can be anything but beautiful. It questions morality, coldness, helplessness, choices, no choices (ness), the idea of man falling for a woman of her age didn't even exist until the society changed many many yrs later.
lucky kate gets to make out with leo and this kid in the same year.i hate her ,no joking she's the best actress of her generation.plus she's a real sweetie.
What moral questions do these critics feel have not been answered??? Isn't getting naked with a 15 year old WRONG, let alone a sexual relationship..SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE!!
thats waht i got out of the movie. that this woman created so much destruction in her ignorance--messing around with a 15 year old is bascially molestation call it what you will. and he's haunted hi entire life as a result.
In the book, Hannah was led to believe (by the kid), that he was 17. Not acceptable anyway but he was not traumatized by the molestation. He was obsessed with Hannah his entire life and he never got over being dumped so coldly by his first love. He obviously was very disappointed that she had been a Nazi and always wondered if she was sorry for her war crimes. He could never love anyone as much as Hannah the experience with her shaped his entire life.
exactly..which is why its called statutory rape.they're too young to deal with it. too much too soon. not fair to the kid. but yeah, i get that that isnt the main poiint of the movie.
Ahh the words of a jealous heart. When I'm 30something i hope i have a figure like Kate Winslet, and i know many a woman that would say the same.
As for "degradatory level in form of acting" she was marvellous at her part! You'll find a certain degree of nudity in any film these days, and i take my hat off to her for being professional enough to be able to pull it off.
Calling her a slut for acting a role for nudity is just narrow minded.
Prostitutes 'pull it off' for money! A professional is simply a person who performs a service for money. And it seems she performed a service for you that you were willing to pay for---this does not denote virtue--but what people value. You value nudity, others value modesty.
I guess since Hitler was professional enough to 'pull off' the murder of millions of Jews and others, we should respect him.
I agree, she was probably marvelous at the part of the pedophile- WOW, what an achievement.
Yes she seduced him,,, because she liked the boy... there is absolutely no rule in the book that says an older woman can't like or fall in love with someone younger,,,, further,, it was choice of the boy as well,, she didn't really force him in any way... it was a Love story as well as a story of self dignity where she surrendered to imprisonment instead of being known as illiterate...

I watched THE READER yesterday, it made me cry when she taught herself how to read in jail! I couldnt believe it that her character rather went to jail, then to admit that she's illiterate. Also in REV.ROAD I could feel her character's desperation and pain so much! God she is such an outstanding actress!!!!
To me, Kate Winslet made the movie The Titantic work. Had they cast anyone else, I do not think the movie would have been the blockbuster it was. In The Reader, she is excellent but without the fine young actor, this movie would not have be as supurb. He is as good in it as she is.
The fact that he is supposed to be 15 and
she in her thirties is beside the point. The movie is excellent. A must see.
In The Court scene, Hanna Asks the Judge, "Well , what would you have done?".......long pause........ then Hanna follows with " Should I not have signed up with Siemens?"
Siemens had been Hanna's job Before she answered a call for guards at the camps. What is she doing, invoking Siemens here, when Siemens had nothing to do with the fire atrocity she's being accused of?
Sorry if you dont know the facts fulcrum100...Siemens was partners with the Nazis...they sent the Jews there to work without any pay (like slaves) until they were too exhausted or sick, then they were sent to camps to die. Many bosses of Siemens ended up in prison for war crimes after the war. Its german history! Siemens and Nazis and death camps are connected!
Thanks for your Reply. i did not know Siemens and the nazis were partners/collaborators. this clears up the thread of the scene, for me. I think The script shouldve gotten that fact into this story somehow/cleverly, pre-courtroom. for those of us who didnt know the link. cheers, EJ [Dublin]
Perhaps it's a tribute to biblical times when sex was permitted shortly after puberty. Although Kate Winslet's character would have to be considered property.
