  • Dang...You have a pretty thick beard.

  • what do these razors go for

  • @daddycavefish I got mine for about £120 shave ready.

  • That Razor makes such a nice sound, compared to others ive listen too. what kind is it??

  • @karlbuttler Razor details are in the description :) Thanks for your comment.

  • Thats it.... Im getting a cut-throat razor

  • cool guy

  • fuuu so scary watching

  • got a straight razor in mail the other day. tried it today but had to finish w/reg shaver. Didn't seem to want to cut the shorter hair. Sharp as any kife I ever owned, seemed sharp enough but I don't guess it was. so i'm wondering if I need to strop it a bunch or hone some? also does a strop actually sharpen a blade more?

  • @assman255 Was it a shave ready razor? Stropping will only align the blade and keep it sharp once it IS sharp. Depending on what you bought and whether it was bought shave ready, I would consider sending it off for honing.

  • To Shave A Dah Face!, To Trim A Dah Beard =)

    -Sweeny Todd

  • Cut-throat Razors are for cutting throats and not for shaving!

  • damn I held my breath with that pressure and steep angle

  • Wow Dude,,you dont look to out o practice...Damned fast to i dare say...Good video..karl

  • nothing wrong with a packet of bics

  • you look kinda like charlie sheen...

  • @Moderm101 oh goddammit yes! he totally does...hahaha

  • What was that Shaving Cream you were putting on in the Beginning?

  • @gforrestersmith Asked and answered in previous comments. Thanks for watching. :)

  • Gotta get hold of one of these, can't get a clean shave otherwise.

  • who honnes your razor for you.

  • @garethininverness Thanks for your question. Details are found in previous comments. :)

  • @garethininverness Search for "Steven Dempster Honing"

  • who hones your razor for you.

  • should trim the beard first, just making the blade blunt and working harder, good demo though, unless you reach expert level you can expect a few nicks here and there

  • @takewhole Thanks for your comment. :)

  • cut throat and razor are never two thing that are good together to me

  • no offence but what is the point of doing it this way? isn't shaving with a electric razor or other razors safer and more reliable?

  • @chris07081 No offence taken. Please don't take this the wrong way, but look into it, read about it, see more videos of people shaving with straight razors - or just google it. Perhaps, until you try it, you'll never know what the point is. :)

  • Hi - What brush do you use?

  • lol he slips halfway thurgh a cuts his thorgt lol wud laugh then he got up n started laughing

  • @tommy8769100 Good lord, judging by your keyboard skills, I wouldn't let you anywhere near a straight razor! :)

  • @spleencheesemonkey stfu u divy its called ext writting u skiny runt

  • @tommy8769100 "ext writting" : my point Beautifully illustrated. What is "skiny" anyway?

  • @spleencheesemonkey Yeah he's got problems with his fingers, he's not allowed anything sharp

  • Like a boss!

  • I'll stick with my mach 3 thanks...

  • Man that one looks sharp.... allways keep a emergency phone close in case of any mistake.

  • A good guide.

I'm thinking of getting a razor like this and think I will now. Is it worth buying something 'cheaper' to learn with or is that just false economy? I mean as in, learn with the cheaper one then buy a really good one.?

  • @Johnoco66 I learned to use a straight using a Wapienica which cost me about £25 "shave ready". Don't forget that you'll have to get at least a strop and a brush to go with it until it needs honing again. The first razor I bought was from ebay and was absolute tosh. It just pulled the hairs out - not a very comfortable shave!

I would invest in a good quality, razor that will last you. If you don't get on with it - you can always sell it.

  • Good job !!! I've tried it four times already and still am slicing myself up like a Christmas Turkey. But i'm hanging in there :0)

  • @Johnnyboy792 Good man. Thick lather, open pores, soft, warm bristles and 30 degree angle. Keep up the good work!

  • Blimey! After two months it takes me the best part of an hour to remove the scruff from my face with a traditional razor. Certainly impressive but I'd doubtless slash my throat with one of them.

  • You look kind of like Sean Bean lol

  • @granpastreetz Lmao holy shit your right he does look like sean bean

  • Ha ha ha. Zoolander.

  • Hi mate just wondering is it hard to learn ? An if I get the same razor is that okay being a total beginner ? An does it only need sharpening every 6 months cheers

  • @Russpotter7 It certainly takes a bit of practice, but that was half of the fun for me. I like a challenge - and it looks pretty cool too ;)

My razor is well balanced, relatively easy to keep on top form with a strop for a while (providing your stropping technique is ok - see some instructional videos), and most of all - it's a beautiful piece of kit.

I recommend a good shaving brush and cream to go with it, it will certainly make your life easier. Good luck.

  • Hey spleencheesemonkey - nice video! How often do you sharp your razor on a whetstone? I bought a DOVO "Black Star", but after shaving three times with it the blade seems to be dully. I tried to strop it on a leather, but it doesn't work :(

Do you have any ideas? Greetings from Germany and sorry for my bad english, I hope you understand :)

  • @Laddch Hi there. Thanks for your comments. I get mine honed about every 6 months at the moment but am not using it every day.

I'm not familiar with the Black Star, although it should be a nice piece of kit if it's a Dovo. Did you buy your razor "shave ready"? It might be worth getting it honed by a professional and taking it from there. Good luck.

  • It reminds me of those western mother where the cowboys shave using the cut throat razor. I certainly couldn't I can't even use a normal Gillette. Thank god for electric shavers! ^^

  • is that scar near your left chin from training how to shave with open blade razor? :s

  • @bigudukaz No, that was done when I was a toddler with fingernails :)

  • @spleencheesemonkey That's crazy, I've got the same scar on my cheek, in the exact location, for the same reason, too.

  • @2.18 lol.. how about stoned?

  • @DC180 Probably have a steadier hand.

  • you gotta have balls to do this folks...

  • Imma have to get me one of those. It's a step up from the oldskool double edged safety razor. Next up: shave dry with a sharpened machete.

  • @lesleyhenriquez Love it!

  • Your chops arent matching o.O xD but yeah respect mon cause.... i would cut myself open like edward sissorhands

  • fuck this guy has NO fear!

  • Thanks very much, I just bought an open razor and will be trying it out soon so your video guide is really handy. I thought I would write now as I may well cut off more than my beard making communication defficult...

By the way as you seem to really know what your doing, any chance of a razor care/stropping video??? Best wishes.

  • @jimenaman Sorry, I only made this video as a way to share the way that I shave. I'm no expert by any means on shaving, razor care or stropping. Lots of information online about the above I'm sure. Thanks for your comment. :)

  • amazing mate, i have the same razor which i strop to perfection and i have to use millions more strokes than you...you nearly shifted a full beard in one pass! either youve got a really soft beard or your technique is 100%, this is a cool example to watch thanks for sharing

  • @fitzpatrick1810 Thanks very much for your feedback.

  • wat is that white stuff

  • @squeezyheart10 That'll be shaving soap.

  • SHAVING:

An excuse to male funny faces in the mirror while you hold a razor sharp blade at your own throat!

  • What do you do to keep it sharp?

  • @Verradonairun Comments below explain what I do for sharpness. Thanks for watching :)

  • @spleencheesemonkey oh, didn't really see those. Thanks man, I'll check it out.

  • nice stripe lol

  • man, that looked so painful. i kept thinking you were going to slice some skin off. next time don't wait so long to shave ;)

  • Omg! Were u naked ! Well besides that. Nice shave

  • @jason1064 I don't think I was..... :s

  • hi mate, what's the name of the soap you use? you don't use shaving foam do you?

  • @pigeonpsycho I have coconut soap and almond soap. Nope. No shaving foam from a can here.... :)

  • Hey cool hair man how do you style it like that and what product do you use?

  • @deathstrike626 That was straight out the shower hair. Nothing but water. It doesn't stay like that. (through choice)

Thanks for your comment though :)

  • What are you using shaving cream with a make up brush or ...? and where can you get a razor like this for how much? Neat video

  • @H0UST0NTEXAS That's a silver tipped badger hair brush. Helps get the bristles warm and wet (just the way I like things)

I bought mine off the internet, shave ready.

    Thanks for your comments.

  • Great vid! I switched to double edged razor and a best badger brush 2 years ago and haven't gone back! I think i may try cut-throat soon now.

  • @BingoBango2111 Good luck with it. Do let me know how you get on.

  • hard way to find out your allergic to horse hair

  • @TheBigPinapple erm...OK. :)

  • so badass

  • thx man for showing, i'm just curious, does it hurt? everytime I shave, it hurts like a bitch

  • @Figedi No, it doesn't hurt. What are you shaving with? Razor, soap etc?

  • @spleencheesemonkey At the moment, I'm using normal shaving cream, and my razor is from Dovo Solingen

  • nicely done you make it look easy

how long u been doin it for

  • @LionOfficiall Couple of years now. Thanks for your comment.

  • I love the sound :D

  • Looks like you have the same curse I do, jet black hair, with a brown/red beard. I would love to grow a full beard, but I am weird about the color contrast. Good video.

  • @jameswwefan1 DID have the best beard :)

  • Oh and good vid :D

  • wow that was two months grotwth, lucky you, my beard would be much longer which is a pain cause I have to shave so often, anyhow excellent video thatnks for posting

  • I'm finding myself oddly attracted to you for shaving in a manly fashion, haha. Why do you use this method to shave? P.S Where in England are you from? Kent?

  • @ozit See chaps - the chicks love it ;)

I shave like this for lots of reasons. I like to take some time for myself now rather than have to rush all the time to get ready, I like the preparation, the feel, the skill needed, the sound, the lack of irritation, the fact that I'll never have to buy mach 3 blades again, and the end result. :)

    I'm in the southwest UK.

  • mate you left yourself with sum pretty grim sideburns there!!

  • water is the reason for blades dulling faster.. you should be using a towel to clean after each stroke.

  • @DEKARKS I prefer not to rub anything across the blade other than some tissue to dry it with afterwards.

  • Which one have you heard? About looking like Charlie Sheen or can you draw a staight line with a ruler.... LOL...LOL.. Loved your video man. I watched my Dad do that when I was a YOUNG boy. I'm 65 years old now and still can't do it. Good vid man.... I'm a Deputy & carry a switch blade... I can shave THEM easily, but not me. Thanks for your vid.

  • excellent, this has convinced me of my need for a new style of razor. thank you very much!

  • Anybody ever tell you that you bear an amazing resemblance to Charlie Sheen?? I would love to try that but I shake too much. Hell, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler!!!!

  • @deputysheriff100 I have read that on the comments here once or twice!

  • im thinking of getting one of these razors, how long did it take you to get that good and how many times did you cut yourself?

  • @radiator0505 Bear in mind that you'll have to think about getting a strop, and some decent soap and brush too.

I'd been shaving with a straight for about a year before I posted this video. Cut myself quite a few times. :) But hey - every cut makes you learn quicker!

  • is your blade dull? seems to stick a bit and you had to muscle it over.

  • @emericanchaos Yes, when this vid was taking it was in need of a honing! You're absolutely right. At one point when I go into the sideburns, you can see the effort needed!

  • How do you keep the blade sharp, whet stone or a strop & how long does the sharpness last before needing to be re-honed? Can you have it professionally sharpened, if so do you know how much it costs?

Also, how often do you cut the skin?

Do you find it gives a closer shave than a safety, or are you just doing it for the fun of it?

    Blade: carbon steel or titanium?

I`ve just torn my face up with a safety razor a-g-a-i-n, hence considering options : (

    Thx.

  • @kcirdrab I send mine off for sharpening by the chap I bought the razor from. It costs about £20. This I do when the stropping doesn't do it any more. Bearing in mind that I only shave about once every 3-4 days.

I only cut myself now if I have a spot that I pass over, or if I'm careless when putting the blade to my face.

I feel the closeness of the shave is as good as, if not better than a safety AND it's more satisfying :)

  • It's a lot easier to shave with a straight when you have over a week's of growth on your face compared to daily shaving.

  • i need to know how to sharpen my blade help

  • @VisitingBoss Check out some vids about sharpening blades. It's not a cheap business - investment in a few stones needed that are quite expensive. I currently send my razor off for sharpening every 6 months or so. It is something that I would like to learn to do myself though.

  • @spleencheesemonkey i think id rather send it off every 6 months then and let a profensional do it thanks for the comment cause i thought you were ment to use a belt lol

  • @VisitingBoss Oh, your blade should stay sharp for a number of months with a strop (which is the belt you refer to) if your technique is OK. That keeps the cutting edge aligned. It's just that after a while it will need honing on some stones.

  • @spleencheesemonkey it feels blunt though its giving me a ruffer shave how much will it cost me to send off and how do i go about this??? thanks

  • @VisitingBoss I'm not sure where in the world you are, but I pay about £25 to get it honed. I post it off and the very helpful chap does his thing and posts it back. I get it done where I bought the razor from. I can give you the link if you're in the UK. He's a wealth of knowledge and knows much more about straight shaving than I do.

  • @spleencheesemonkey im in the south east mate so if its to far dont bother but 25 quid is more then accecptable i was exspecting to pay loads if theres a link id be more then greatful

  • @VisitingBoss

It's all done by post so it's not as if you need to physically take it anywhere. If you have any further questions, I suggest contacting Steve through that site. He'll tell you all you need to know. Will pop the url into your inbox. Hope this helps.

  • Great job !!! I've tried it for the first time and it felt like my face went thru a blender. Guess I need more practice :0)

  • Top Job - Thanks

  • i think i see a cut near his lip

  • Cricky! Fine technique, my friend. Bet you can butter a mean tost.

  • so is it first pass with the grain of the hair and then the second against. or can you just go against?

  • @nolangreen Some say do one pass with the grain followed by one against the grain. Others swear by just one pass with the grain. It depends on you really, and how close you want it - and whether you get any irritation.

There are now parts of my neck I do only once against the grain, and it's done the job. It's all about finding out what works for you.

  • @spleencheesemonkey the sound is classic..i have done it drunk..i cut my nose..LOL

  • @nolangreen There is no need to make a second pass with a straight razor if you do it right, its always where i gona cut myself is during the second pass.

  • @Plpoo Personal preference. You'll see that many do.

  • iv never had a starit shave im thinkin abt going to my barber is it normel to besceard iv only used an elcectric shaver

  • What soap do you use, mate?

  • @M15HUN I use Trumpers coconut and Trumpers Almond. Lasts for ages and smells gorgeous.

  • I use gillete fusion 4 blade against the grain 'cause my hair aint that thick. Can u use cut throat razor against grain or is that a no no?

  • @lushasraisinsbre You sure can. Some do, some don't. There are parts of my neck that I do against the grain only, but I know that it won't irritate me there.

  • I can't believe it! This is the first video on straight razor shaving that the person needs a shave. In the other vid's up here on YOUTUBE the person showing how to shave looks as if it's only been about 10 hours since the last time. What good does that do us? So once again, spleencheesemonkey, thanks for showing us how it's done.

  • I tried shaving with a cut throat razor once, closest shave I ever had! Cut right through all the hair on my neck...and skin...and arteries and bone!

  • I had a shave once with a straight razor and it was awesome. I didn't do it myself mind, I went to a barber, I was just terrified of getting cut!

  • @malicant123 See, that's something I'd love to have done, but haven't yet had the opportunity. I've tried shaving someone else - and that's tricky!

  • @malicant123 yeah its great i get my head and face done once a week at a barbers plus it removes all the dead skin its great

  • Great! Thank you for the informations about the razor.

  • Tried my first cut throat shave today. I now need reconstructive facial surgery & a blood transfusion! You make it look so easy.

  • @happytyskie I've been straight-shaving for two weeks now and only had one cut. It's not that hard to do.

  • @happytyskie LMAOOOOOOOO!!!! Sorry to hear that!!!!

  • Hi

    Great video, perfect!

You could post a video teaching you how to sharpen your straight razor

    Regards

    LMVasc - Brazil

  • @LMVasc Thanks for your comment. I'm not in a position to demonstrate anything at all - let alone sharpening a razor! I just uploaded this vid to share my experience of shaving with a straight. I send mine off for sharpening when stropping won't do it anymore.

  • I came....

  • @GerudoUK Waaahahahahaaaa!

  • i no every1 is gonna call me a pussy for sayin this, but i couldnt help but cringe lol but i am still gonna get a cut throat looks so much better ;)

  • @tippa2kk Go for it mate. 'Tis a good feeling when you get it right.

  • Great video!

Any tips for beginners just starting out?

  • @MTBDH Practise! Buy a shave ready razor, and spend a lot of time lathering up making sure the bristles are as soft as possible. Keep the razor at a 30 degree angle and take your time. You won't get it right first time round, but you'll learn what works the more you do it.

  • I squirmed through the whole thing, except when you put half your body weight into yanking the razor through your sideburn. That was when I put my hands over my eyes and groaned. You are very brave. thanks for sharing!

  • How does your skin feel after shaving like that? Any irritation later on in the day or anything like that?

  • @MrBoo88 Usually not too bad at all when the blade is kept sharp. Trumpers skin food does a good job of keeping the skin calm. I find that I get most irritation when shaving very short stubble around the neck. I prefer to let it grow a bit before attacking it again.

  • Great video man I ordered my cut throat the other day. Question though, how do you shave the chin without cutting yourself? Do you angle the blade differently or something? Cheers!

  • @joshbryan90 Thanks for your comment. Personally I rotate the blade around the curvature of the skin as I go round the chin. Difficult to explain, but that's another up-side of using a straight - you have full control over the angle of the blade. I hope this helps. Failing that, there might be some tutorials or videos of how to negotiate the chin around somewhere. Good luck!

  • i used a cut throat awhile back and it just seemed to hurt alot.. like it was pulling the hairs.. but the blade was new!!?!!? wtf?!?! it was a cheap bog standard razor though

  • @pdrums777 The first razor I used was a cheap bog standard one from ebay and it was tosh. Exactly the same experience as you by the sounds of it. Make sure you buy one that's shave ready.

  • You make it look so easy mate. I wish I had hair like yours,

  • I like this guy hes not prancing infront of the camera like them other fags, he just looks like a normal bloke that just woke up and thought hed show us how to use a cut throat .cheers fella lol

I tried to use my cut throat the other day cut myself 3 times and gave up...

  • @Khaos969 Thanks very much for your comment. "Keep trying" is all I can say. It'll come.

  • you have something on your nose xD

  • ive been practicing with a cut throat blade holder that you can change the blade on havter each use " im using wilkinson blades with are nice and sharp " its a much cheaper way to start of open cut shaving " got myne of ebay £5.50 with 20 blades " just wonderd if you have tryed them and are they much diffrent to a dove one ?

  • @dazbrown28kly

I have used them and they provide a very close shave - not quite as comfortable though, in my opinion, but as you rightly say - a very good way to get into it.

I take one with me if I'm traveling as I don't want to take the chance of losing the Dovo :)

The ones I use are made by "Merkur" - I found them to be more kind to the skin than the WS ones. Worth checking out as they're still cheap.

  • ahhh silky smooth, u suit a goatee

  • @Surefiresecurity Thanks for your comment. Glad to hear you're doing well.

  • That En Vogue is a work of art.

  • 6:15 = Zoolander face.

  • @Heretharbemonsters

    Haha - "Blue Steel"

  • i seriously think this is a great video.. but you need to lose those sideburns.. fucksakes man.. they are horrid.

  • Nice job

  • You ever end up in the E.R. after one of these shaves?
