A miracle. Thousands of people were out on the bridge (Västerbron) that day. Had it landed there it would have meant a DISASTER. But - it landed on the tiny island of Långholmen just beside the bridge. And not one person got hurt! (even the pilot managed to survive. You can see him catapult himself out on a parachute.)
The scandal is that the goverment, localauthorities, SAAB and the military let a fighter jet in development fly over a major city with 100,000+ people in the streets during a festival. In my opinion the Swedish Defence Minister at the time, Anders Björk, is to blame. He was soon keen to show the world what kind a cool toys a country like Sweden could produce.
Like if Norway did anything bether, your bying all your miletary stuff from other contrys while sweden sell 4 exampel Gustav Raketgevär ´2 other contrys.
THe scandal is all the leftwingers who have destryed all the defensis of sweden talking trash of Gipen. the best fighter in the world. Sad the politicians not know a thing of tecnology, only wanting more leftwingers to invade sweden....
The pilot, Lars Rådeström, was the second pilot to ever fly Gripen (Griffin, the symbol of SAAB) back in 1989. A pilot named Stig Holmström, who was the chief testpilot for the Gripen program was the first one to fly it, in december 1988. As somebody said, the problem was that the over sensitve, faulty steering system which haden't perfected. Rådeström was NOT attempting to do a "Pugachevs Cobra".
Yeah,USA needed vectorial traction and 25 years of copying Russian tech and aerodynamics,to make a cobra. Finally! What took you so long?A normal MiG-29 or Su-27 can do the cobra better than your pile of junk F-22,without vectorial traction :)
Thats only one f-22 display. Infact an f-22 can do a power loop, where as the Su-xx cant. F-22 can accelerate while going verticle. where the suckois cant (thrust to weight ration). F-22 can sustain a 9g turn above above mach 1 vs. only 5.5 for the suckoi. The suckoi has a slightly faster roll rate at speeds below 400kts, but thats about it.
Actually the Saab Draken was the first plane to do the cobra back in the 60's. Long before Russia did it. Russia only made it popular during air shows.
watch?v=Hax3rhqGJcQ
THe US F-14 did the Cobra before the Su-27 as well, seen here:
watch?v=1lVvfSQGqoc
The F-22 does all the maneuvers the Su-35 does seen here:
they do not make the best and the us does have beter planes only one but beter we invented stealth in the 1980s or something like that imagen now but russia dose have badass planes
it is the best plane in the world, but they cant proof it, because its the pilots who cant master it... i vote for no-pilot-planes... bring it to the edge...
Sweden have very good and well-trained fighter pilots, you can't blame them. But of course the pilot who crashed two times was probably not the best in the air force...
I agree, but what are the odds of a pilot crashing twice. At the time there where probaly a few Jas 39 Gripen pilots educated on viggen and draken flying it, they are two diffrent planes and probaly requires a diffrent education and combined with other factors the crash was a fact.
You are correct, he was an "old school" pilot who was used to more analog planes (Draken, anyone?). He was used to making fine adjustments with the stick to keep the plane level, JAS does this for you so when he kept fiddling with the stick the computer system was flooded with commands and crashed (pun intended).
I'll call Swedish military pilots, and pray them to crash at our school :/

What's interesting is that among the aircrafts that are used by the worlds air forces today there's only one video of a JAS 39 Gripen crashing.

That aircraft was a complete waste of money. Its a disaster! Look at it, lived a couple of days, and crashed on both of them. What a catastrophy.
It tried to do the Su-35 thing with the tail first, and ofcourse it fucked up.
Hate grips..

Its not a Su-47 or a Mig-35, you can't do the cobra or kulbit, don't even try.

ironically, two of the crashed planes had the same pilot. don't know if the crashes occurred coz of pilot error though, but I have my suspicions. =)

This error has since then been fixed, I believe.
